It sounds like a movie has been used twice (because we've gone on for so long that some of the earlier clues have been forgotten). The only other "rule" we have is that the scene must have appeared on film, in a theater, not made for TV or direct to video.

Found another still from the same scene. The guy in the gorilla suit is George Segal playing a guy named GORDON Hocheiser. Ruth GORDON plays his mother Louise.

So close ... had a guy in a monkey suit and the main actor with the same last name (The Bride and the Beast, a.k.a Queen of the Gorillas ... mmm, Ed Wood special). Alas, that doesn't meet the criteria and the movie was in B&W, not color.
