It looks as if this is being offered as a class project for RL teachers and students. In that light, I'm surprised that it's starting so late in the school year.

Ah yes a good little tid-bit of info to help us understand the gameplay a little more

Quote:
Go to www.worldwithoutoil.org. After April 30, you will see the CURRENT COSTS for fuel in a white banner near the top. How do you think those costs compare to fuel prices before the shock began? Click the banner to see a graph.
.
The Situation Update is below the white price banner. Click on the headline to read the entire story. At the bottom, click on "Previous" if you want to see earlier stories. Are there any developments there that are surprising to you?
.
To the far left of the Situation Update, there are the Stories about the crisis. Click on some of them, to experience the stories. Do they give you a clear picture of what's going on? What could they do better?
.
Below the Situation Update, there's a map. Find your location on the map and click it. Look at your area doing? (Does it have a good Response Rank (low is good)?) What might affect the number of people in your area that are responding to the oil shock?

Interesting. It looks like we'll have a dashboard of sorts. I guess it'll give us "reality" for us to respond to.

I'm thinking that I might do the same, starting a new blog and continuing the current one in character as WWO events unfold. Very Happy

You make a good point. It is after all pre-game. I think we're pretty much on rails until the 30th.

Yes he leaked the news & yes it is the right thing to try and keep him safe and alive, but I doubt knowing what brought on the crisis is going to have any impact on surviving it. It is certainly too late to avoid the crisis.

If the guy had any real stones, he would have done whatever he could to alert people in power not just some random folks at the Denver Airport.

If there's someone out there manipulating the oil supply, knowing what they're doing and why they're doing it could help us thwart any attempts to make the situation even worse. You're right, though. We need to resign ourselves to the 4-30 event. BTW, I don't think I've ever seen anybody on the forums who's "entrenched" Impressive!

We don't really have a way to influence Nico outside of perhaps trading the information in the video to him in exchange for additional info. But even then, that decision is dependant on two things 1) What does it say in Bulgarian and 2) Having a member of the 8TSOC pass it on.

#2 is a bit important here. We don't have a way to contact Nico directly which means that we would need to get the buy-in of not only the community to agree to do so, but also that of an 8TSOC member to do it (gracesmominnh being the most obvious one as she's had the most face to face contact with Nico). From the impression I'm getting from gracesmom, I don't think she's going to be willing to lie to Nico, and I'm not willing to risk destroying her trust by lying to her.

My instinct is saying to play this straight for right now. There are games that require a bit of cloak and dagger and misdirection from the player base, but I don't think this game is one of them. Poeticexplosion is correct, UF is out of bounds for characters, but any PM worth their salt will be following the discussion but NOT contributing; at least on the UF boards that is. Other boards have different ToC. I guess the point I'm making is that what we suggest "Out of Game" may influence the direction the game takes but then again may not. If we suggest stuff that takes the game too far off its ARC then the amount of last minute rewriting is generally too difficult to make the exercise worthwhile, and the PMs do by definition pull the strings. Which means they read your post and now know about the plan. Its going to be very difficult to communicate about this without disclosing the information to any lurkers since we have no one of knowing who is watching but not saying anything.

nico

Jegger, I totally agree that the planning for this needs to be in-game. As such, I just e-mailed mPathytest (since we've had several AIM conversations) the following:

OK - several of us have been talking privately about the Nico thing.

If he's truly being pursued by a foreign entity or entities, we need to keep him
safe, and gather what info we can from him. The problem is, anything we discuss
on our forums can also be monitored by folks that have access to us. A secret
plan is needed to throw his pursuers off-scent.

We need to quickly create a false trail which appears to move Nico far away from
Maine. This has to be 'bought into' by the community and only accidentally or
reluctantly revealed to Nico's pursuers. We don't have phone or e-mail access
to most of the 8+, so I'd appreciate whatever help you can give in setting this
up - and as quickly as possible.

Thoughts?

I appreciate your input in advance.

I'll let everyone know as soon as I hear anything!

Has anyone else noticed this at the bottom og worldwithoutoil.org/teach ?

"WORLD WITHOUT OIL is a collaborative alternate reality. It begins April 30, 2007.
Play it – before you live it."

...followed by a number of real-world sponsors (CPB, etc.). The page makes it pretty clear that there will be a new site design on Monday and that it will cater to teachers and students in one flavor or another. This is my first ARG, so I'm not sure about this - I'm assuming that this is quite unusual for the PMs to not only identify the game as a game, but to launch a public campaign for involvement (as the sponsors would suggest). Regardless, it would seem that the intent of WWO is true to what the creator mentioned in those interviews - wanting to break the mold of the ARG genre and trying to affect the real world, which, I think, is pretty groovy.

So I guess they've just been doing all this pre-game storyline and interaction to get ARGers behind it before it goes public?

Anyway, just pointing that out.
