The movie is based on the true story of two climbers in the Andes. One climber breaks his leg on their descent from a first-ever climb of a crazy hard route up the West face of Siula Grande. (the only decent picture of that face I could find is below) They are almost down to safety after the other climber heriocally performs a one-person rescue and lowers him down the mountain. Until...
The story is a mountaineering legend. The book is great. The movie I liked because it allowed me to see where the story took place.

Well I'm guessing but I only know this because of Rogi's clues...does that count?
It seems it won the Academy Award for Best Special Effects against Gone With the Wind.

It would be bad form to make a guess right now, but I think I know this one.
IIRC, another type of natural disaster played prominently and it won a single Oscar in a new category. The remake, 16 years later wasn't as good, even with the big-name cast.
