I haven't spent much time on the RN stuff, because frankly I think they're a bunch of morons. I think it was Mort who mentioned a method they used for securing data on their site, and that alone is enough to tell me I want nothing to do with them. There is the funk of incompetence about them (I like the sound of that one Very Happy). I've no doubt that they THOUGHT there was risk in what they were doing, but in my vast experience all delusional people THINK their delusions are valid. Sure it would be fun to know what they are up to (it's that good 'ole psychotic allure), but I doubt it would mean anything.

Speaking of psychotic allure, any luck with Ms. Smoke? I'll tell ya, I had one of those woowoo moments when I saw those crayons. Isn't that silly? Were you cats able to get anything useful out of that? I checked out the wiki page Mort mentioned. I see that both those colors are in the 48 box and on up (didn't even know they made a 48 box, if they still do. I'm a fan of the old school 64, myself, although I see from this handy reference that there is no jade green - smarmy buggers).

I don't have a lot of experience with carcinogenic online oracles, but I have occasionally needed to set up ways for people to authenticate themselves. A table like that wiki page could work for something like that, if you knew the right pattern. I'll look at it some more, maybe something will jump out at me. If any of you are so inclined, I hope you'll do the same. If someone is using crayon colors as a way to code in, it's probably reasonable to assume that the whole protocol will change at some point - so the more brains the better.

Thanks for checking out the show. I admire your willingness to risk the taint of goofiness (that's in the box right next to the funk of incompetence). I'm hoping to do some more in the near future - so don't say you weren't warned.

More soon,
Jade

Okay, so, I guess we drop RN for now. Maybe it was a red herring that got out of hand, I dunno. I'll still be waiting for Feb. 6, though.

Heh, either Jade or the PMs seem to be making the same mistake I did, assuming Midnight Blue is in the box of 48. Maybe I won't have to buy that big 120 box after all. I shall, however, refrain from telling him we tried "jade" on Smoke. Foily!

She seems to disconnect from you as soon as you reply with the wrong answer, at least that's what's happened with me.

Had she asked mort "?" yet when that happened, and had he responded?

She was just on, so I grabbed this block (good idea Rogi) and threw it at her...

While Smoke was processing thinking over my answer, I considered hitting her with another bunch of colors, but was afraid of what that would do. Maybe next time.

Got email from Jade, but I'll post it separately.

The idea that "Smoke" was a bot had crossed my mind. But there's not much to go on, there.

If we could figure out why she stayed available for one person while disconnecting from another, we might see the beginnings of a trigger.

How about someone throwing a whole box of color at her in one attempt.

If we want to truly try and filter down to a color that works, we could try, say, a dozen at a time.

Oh, I'm sure a competent artist could do a job good enough for the papers. Rolling Eyes

The first line from Jade's Jan. 16 blog post was bugging me so I looked it up. http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/dead_or_alive/albums.jhtml?albumId=35225
Nothing jumps (so to speak) out at me from the lyrics, but the album cover features the lead singer in a rather violently purple outfit. Kl00?

Maybe Philly was using foo-foo sounding colors because he'd been interacting with Smoke for some time. We're beginners so maybe we have to start with the basic colors.

But does the Box o' 48 have enough colors to draw an accurate artist's rendering of Philly's comatose body? I'm sure the fellers at Djinn would appreciate it. Slap it up on their office fridge with a check mark shaped magnet. Very Happy

colors, colors everywhere

Well, I did another impulsive thing... I went out and bought a big box (64) of Crayolas. I'm such a dork. Dunce However, it doesn't appear to be big ENOUGH, however, because, guess what, no midnight blue in the box. D'oh! There is salmon and wisteria, though (and orchid).

I got confused by the Wikipedia page - I thought the second column (colors introduced in 1949, to make a total of 48 ) would be all the colors in a box of 48. Not so, apparently. So now I get to decide whether to go find a big-mama box of 120, which will have all the colors.

Never mind what I said about trying "please" - now that I think about it the civility requirement is obviously met by saying "thanks" at the end. It feels weird to jump in with a password & no greeting or introduction, but then, Smoke's the one who just shoots us a "?", so whatever.

About the wetpaint wiki - I know it's no despoiler, but in the absence of such, it might be a good way to help us be more organized. Anybody can join it, and anybody who joins can edit it, so don't be shy. A good thing to do for now might be to just have a list of what passwords/colors we've tried with Smoke.

She does come off a bit bot-like, doesn't she? I'm not sure it matters for now, though, or how we'd be able to tell for sure. OTOH when I was googling oracles I thought I saw some online things that would tell your fortune, so who knows?

She's online now. I tried Jade, it didn't work.

ETA: I then asked "what do I have to do to become initiated?" and she signed off. Nevermind it says it was not delivered.

I wonder if capnomantrix is a bot?

So, I dunno, maybe "please"?

So we know that "hello" isn't it. Ok, here are the skype names I have. If I have yours wrong, please let me know (either here or via PM if you don't want it on the forum):
syl.vi.a
mort.kuolevaisuus
dunhill_s.r.
dashcat
surfzoned
perique3
And of course ramback and capnomantrix.

Maybe we need to find a more specific connection between salmon and midnight blue, a pattern to predict the next color in a sequence. Which one came first, salmon or midnight blue? (EDIT: midnight blue, then salmon (thanks Mort).)

Purple Mountain's Majesty or Royal Purple, maybe? Royalty are civilized, right?

The only reason I singled out the Crayola thing was because Jade did. I'd come across it, but didn't pay attention to it. And we hadn't explicitly investigated that as a possible connection.

Has anyone tried simply, "Smoke"?

Is there a Crayola color that satisfies the civility requirement by its definition or as a pun? Something that says, "Hello. How are you?".

How about "Fuzzy Wuzzy Brown"?

Maybe "Shadow" would be an appropriate reference to her moniker as used by us.

OMG Crayola colors, that would be awesome. Laughing

So is Orchid, though, and that didn't work. Lamplack is not listed, however.

I've been mulling over things in my head, but I also had a birthday this weekend and am still recovering. Random thoughts: I just can't believe that this (St. Pete) is a gamejack or an enormous red herring. But I'm also having a really hard time with the New Jersey scifi club thing. It seems to scream OOG, but the link came straight from Ethan... if anybody else wants to join their Yahoo group and give their opinion, please do.

For example: Yesterday, they posted that one of their members DIED. "He collapsed at the bus stop on the way home from work" was the only detail given. Several condolence messages later, the arrangements were posted - direct cremation, no viewing (supposedly due to having a family scattered family, some in the Netherlands), and a memorial service in early May.

I thought you knew they were Crayola colors. Most of the colors on the web list are. Not stuff like Ghost White, but yeah, things like Thistle and Wisteria and Salmon are. The pass probably isn't Crayola, though; if it's been individual colors so far, that would be a weird departure.

Yo, Mort!

Hey, comrade, not sure if this helps or if it is just some more random chafe to wade through but after dinner tonight I was hanging out with my younger daughter and we decided to explore some contemporary art by pulling out our colouring books. She doesn't colour in her books as much as she used to, preferring instead to work up original compositions with her oil pastels (I blame Mrs. Macalla Wink ).

Anyway, I was picking through our big Tupperware box of 1001 Crayolas looking for just the right shade of green when I happened upon Midnight Blue. Hmmmm, said I. Of course I starting looking for the other, and sure enough, after a longish search (really, it's about 1001 crayons) there was a Salmon (broken in half and with a good deal of the paper peeled off, but I'm sure it says Salmon).

So I guess that's at least one way they are related. Not sure what that gives us though (other than waxy flakes all over my floor).

More soon,
Jade

I let him know about the Web Color angle. Oddly enough, Wisteria is also a Crayola color.

There's no way the password could be as simple as Crayola, right?
