yes Sentient has been used a lot, that's probably why it sounds familiar. think X-Files.

For some reason, this virus sounds vaguely familiar....but I can't quite place where I heard about it.

Off the top of my head, the closest I've ever heard of a 'sentient virus' is the H5N1 (bird flu) virus or that new strain of Staph bacteria. (Which of course doesn't apply, because it's a bacteria xD)

Sentient basically means an intelligent living thing. Therefore, what we have is an unknown live smart virus that has yet to be named.

The only Sentient Virus thing that came up when I googled it was the Despotellis, apparently a virus from the DC Comics' Green Lantern Corps thingamabob.

Seems to be a professor at The University of Washington doing an independent study on a previously unheard of virus.
