Nicely done, classical! Just to be clear, which code were you talking about?
And now that we have a time and place, I suppose we should see if we can't convince Bricker to go out there.

The more I looked at that code, the more I was thinking it was MAXA Crypt, as Wulf suggested, rather than base64. Assuming that, I knew there had to be a passcode of some sort--a key, if you will.
Long story short, I tried the serial number on the front of the yuan ("CH44082353") and GUESS WHAT I GOT!

Keep in touch with your unforum friends Brian. You need them as much as they need you.
I'm not so sure it's the same Randall. Our Randall seems to be one with a bit of an English charm; I don't think he fits the bill for the Awkward Obligatory Boyfriend from the novel. He was never given a last name in the novel, either...

Yeah, but since Jenny's still alive, I wasn't too surprised to hear that Randall was still alive too. Maybe someone should send that bit of the TGATT to Bricker and verify that he wrote it. If nothing else, it might spark his memory.

And wait just a minute. I may be getting wires crossed here, but Bricker just said that he never created Randall? Randall was Jenny's boyfriend in the story that we got from the jumpdrive, right? Which definitely belonged to Bricker, right? Unless I missed something, this is just further evidence that Bricker's losing memories, or something.
Isn't Randell dead? I seem to remember Rage killed him before he shot Jenny.

It's like the world is all falling to pieces around us, and all we can do is wait for emails. As for T Bettelheim, he/she has always been a naysayer of this game (at least from the emails that I've seen). I'm thinking we should take his advice with a grain of salt.

Ho-lee shit if this ain't turning into one hell of an endurance contest!! Your little gang is down to like three fucking people. Give up already nobody will even notice when you blink!!
It's not like there's gonna be a soft, gooey surprise at the center of this candy shell. Go run a freekin marathon and tell your hanger-on friends that enough is enough already.
Ain't nothing to see here folks, move it along yo!!
My response...
Quote:
Running a marathonis a test of one's endurence, determination and dedication. Runners are an unusual bunch; we like to punish ourselves for fun. There is no reward or prize at the end of my daily runs, except sore muscles and sweaty clothes. There doesn't have to be a "gooey surprise" at the end, The reward is seeing it to the end. As to how many of us there are, you would be surprised
It looks like base64, but for some reason, I can't get it to convert to anything legible. Someone check my work, please. Am I just doing something wrong?
The first thing that occurred to me was the encryption we've been using to pass back and forth with Brian recently. But that didn't work either. I tried a few different things, but no luck.
I've been working on this too but no dice just yet.

The song playing is "Darkness on the Edge of Town" from the album of the same name by Bruce Springsteen, released in 1978. (one of his best IMHO)
The lyrics...
Quote:
They're still racing out at the Trestles
But that blood it never burned in her veins
Now I hear she's got a house up in Fairview
And a style she's trying to maintain
Well if she wants to see me
You can tell her that I'm easily found
Tell her there's a spot out `neath Abram's Bridge
And tell her there's a darkness on the edge of town
Everybody's got a secret Sonny
Something that they just can't face
Some folks spend their whole lives trying to keep it
They carry it with them every step that they take
Till some day they just cut it loose
Cut it loose or let it drag `em down
Where no one asks any questions
Or looks too long in your face
In the darkness on the edge of town
Some folks are born into a good life
Other folks get it anyway anyhow
I lost my money and I lost my wife
Them things don't seem to matter much to me now
Tonight I'll be on that hill `cause I can't stop
I'll be on that hill with everything I got
Lives on the line where dreams are found and lost
I'll be there on time and I'll pay the cost
For wanting things that can only be found
In the darkness on the edge of town
The roll over images...

I also got a reply from Bricker today, and I'll say it. This is getting weird. The reason this really stuck out in my mind, was way back towards the beginning, in a chat with Bricker (I'm starting to suspect that it was the fake Bricker) I asked why he couldn't just write the ending, to come out the way we needed, and I was told that wasn't possible. Anyway-
Quote:
Brother,
The Feds are afraid of me? I'm not sure how that works! They're like a faceless crowd hurling insults at me...I can't tell who to respond to.
Randall Snodgrass? I didn't write him. I don't think anyway.
But Ron told me that I wrote everyone, including you, and that I am responsible for all of the bad that happens in the world because I'm not writing it away. Everything is my fault and people are full of pain and lonliness and are disconnected from those around them and I don't know how to write a solution. I don't how to fix what I've done.
I keep seeing mountains and I think I'm supposed to pack up and go away to the mountains. Leave everything behind. Is that what I should do? I'm asking you which is pretty much asking me, isn't it.
Take care of yourself my friend.
i'm replying to him now.

Okay, so I had sent a note to Bricker after Wulf's last email from him, whenever that was, basically telling him to not give in, we were there for him, etc. etc. etc.
And just now I got a reply:
Quote:
You have no idea how much this means to me. I was at the end of my rope and was checking my e-mail this afternoon (curious to see how much trouble I was in for blowing off a writing project that was supposed to have been done three months ago) when I found an e-mail from you and one from Justin. It made me mad at how easily I had given up, you know? But it's hard to fight this. It's like fighting smoke.
Things have been really weird.
My daughter was disgnosed with something called JIA which stands for juvenile ideopathic arthritis. I ran across a letter from her doctor explaining it but it was dated back in December of last year. I took it to my wife and said "why didn't I know about this?" and "could this be why we've had her in the ER so much lately?" and she looked at me like I was crazy. She told me that we hadn't had our daughter in the emergency room since back in December. I argued that we just had her in there two days ago and I described the entire event to her including who the ER doctor was and she was incredulous. She told me that I was hallucinating because I was describing an ER visit from the day after Christmas and that I've known about my daughter's condition for 8 months. She was a healthy, active kid and might end up in a wheelchair for the rest of her life. I think someone got to my wife, Courtney. I know what I know and I'm 100% positive that this hasn't been going on for 8 months! Maybe someone got to me and I'm all screwed up. You and I met in Portland, right? You have blue eyes. And Justin is tall and thin and likes to smoke. Did I make you up, too?
My youngest daughter came into my bedroom late last night and I woke up because I could feel her staring at me. I asked her what she wanted and she didn't say anything for a long time and then she leaned over and whispered in my ear, "I was in my bed and then my eyes started feeling funny and then I could see the world ending." Then she just turned and went back to bed. This morning she remembered it, but thought the whole thing was just kind of odd rather than scary.
I'm afraid something has happened to me, I feel adrift in an ocean unfamiliar.
I hope you are real, because heaven help you if you are a figment of my imagination. That never seems to go well for anyone.
--Brian
I'd say something like, 'okay, this is weird' now, but I'd just be repeating myself!
