So it was Lynch. Somehow I've missed seeing that one. I'll have to put it in the NF queue. I'll let somebody else drive. as I'll be in and out over the weekend.
wait. So what was the answer? That last frame looks like some stop-motion animated short -- which would not qualify as a title shown in theaters, would it?
Rogi is correct. He reincorporated the short (which was not stop-motion animated, those are actual people, one of which is Naomi Watts, wearing rabbit heads), into a larger feature that was shown in theaters.

You're correct, catherwood. But he re-used parts of the shorts in a larger, 4 years later project.

They say the one actually loosing his mind is the last to find out.... Another 'Oops' for my memoirs... if I can remember where I left them.
The Straight Story?
*edit*
And that 'oops' also goes for this early guess.

red, orange and green hi-lo shag "renter's carpet" was outlawed. Brown wasn't outlawed until the '90s.
That would fit perfectly with a 'budget conscious' movie. They probably got payed for removing it from the location after filming.
And to keep in theme and on subject:
Blue Velvet?

Because you skipped the '80s, you are probably unaware that red, orange and green hi-lo shag "renter's carpet" was outlawed. Brown wasn't outlawed until the '90s.
Doesn't ring any bells, but, how about something like Inception?
