That would probably be me. Scimitar just got a little too impatient with my emails, I guess.
Quote:
OK, I give up. Alex = Alexander Sword = Scimitar
After you sent the last msg on my FAILTECH email, I simply can't believe you didn't catch the point. I am Alexander Sword. And why am I doing this? Well, do you think the news "FAILTECH Board of Directors Chairman causes massive company losses" is a good headline for tomorrow? Of course not, I've been working with Orein for a few years already. So just please do reboot LAINSY NOW.

Scimitar's reply and my rebuttal. I'm trying to be stern in my tone yet hint decreasingly subtly that I am slightly corrupt.
Quote:
Well, the code is basically to unlock a particular function of LAINSY that has since been locked out. It allows us to send in a particular command that it would otherwise reject or ignore. That's as much as I can say about this.
Quote:
I'm sorry, but that is just short of dodging the question. You answered the basic purpose of the code but you failed to answer my main point. Why is it that you ask us to initiate this restart. What do you, or, more to the point, what do I have to gain?
EDIT: whoops, didn't copy that rebuttal correctly. XD
EDIT2: Ok, here's his even more vague response. I assume he's referring to your message, posse. Apparently, to continue, we're going to have to switch our interrogative efforts over to Alex.

Now's the best time to ask one of your teammate what I just told him.

Okay, Scimitar had to embarrassingly spell it out to me that Alex = Alexander Sword. And that it's probably a good idea to ask him about the blog. So I'm doing that now.

Well, it sounds like we're going to end up rebooting her sooner or later.
Since it's generally a good thing to ask, I am going to go ahead and send Scimitar the following message, which ended up including the "WHAT" question as well.
Quote:
Hello, Scimitar.
I know you haven't heard from me as of yet, and that is because I have thought long and hard about what I would say to you, if anything at all. I have decided that the most logical response to what you are asking of us, and one which I am surprised has not been asked of you yet (to my knowledge, that is), is this one simple yet potent word:
Why?
Why would we want to initiate a LAINSY restart sequence? I know that the purpose of this restart would be to allow for a special bit of code to be run, but I know nothing of this code or its purpose. Why would I want to run this code? What is it for exactly? What does it do?
I am perfectly willing to cross over to your side, Mr. Scimitar, however, I am a very logical and systematic person, and I will not do so without sufficient reason. It will take more than a mere question and vague motives to convince me. What more can you offer?

I think scimitar mean we need to send LAINSY something AFTER she reboot, but that's what scimitar doesn't know, yet. SO if we reboot LAINSY, code will run and it will wait for the next thing we send to it.
Now, on the sstv it says something about logic and problem. Also about a graphic problem we have to send in as a sentence. I suppose what we need to send to LAINSY that scimitar doesn't know is what's on the sstv?

Been in talks with both Miller and Scimitar about the audio message.
Dan's message (after the uneloquent one):
Quote:
Sorry, I just had a short panic attack because I don't see why there would be a hidden protocol in LAINSY. What could it be for? What would Genus want us to do with it?
Scimitar's opinion about the hidden protocol:
Quote:
That's probably what Orein was talking about. He said, after the reboot we'll need to send LAINSY something. Which is why we'll need to run a particular code on her startup. Not sure what he wanted to be sent to LAINSY, but I'm sure he said it will be something he'll provide later on, which could something on the blog right now. Not very sure, but that can be a possibility.
What it boils down to, we can't reboot LAINSY unless we know what to send her to start the code. So we need to look at the blog to see if there are any clues.

Hey, I'm back again. Sorry, I'm still a bit busy with overflow from yesterday.
Anyway,

Pretty uneloquent response... how very unlike him...
Actually, I've been noticing a lot of typos and grammatical errors throughout this ARG. I think English might just not be the PMs' native language and that they are simply using it to appeal to a wider audience.

SO are we rebooting LAINSY? Or still waiting for more from Dan? I can't follow right now.
Well, I hate to sound narcissistic, but I still like my plan. (plus, it did seem to be in line with what several other people were saying) I say we do our best to squeeze as much essential information out of Scimitar as possible and then decide on what to do from there. I'm willing to email him with one of the questions. Specifically, I'll take the "WHY." What say you all?

Maybe he knows what it is and he is in panic of some sort that he can't type well anymore? I don't know... hmmmm...

Okay folks, here is the decoded image from the SSTV message. The program I used cuts off the bottom so I had to re-decode the bottom part.
Also how I did this:
1. Download RX-SSTV & run it http://users.belgacom.net/hamradio/rxsstv.htm
2. Root around to find my old PC microphone and plug that into the mic jack on my PC's soundcard.
3. Plug in my headphones (so I don't disturb the rest of the house) and aim microphone directly into headphones to catch the sound
4. Play the proc.wav file
5. Press the "RX" button and watch the pretty picture develop!

Any updates? There seems to be a new file on /experts sounds like SSTV... not what I really do, so I'll just wait it up to you guys

I'm still in talks with Scimitar about those images posted on Genus Orein's blog. An interesting question he posed:
Quote:
Have you ever wonder who's voices Orein was hearing?
I scoffed with the suggestion of aliens, and his response was:
Quote:
Why don't you believe in aliens? hahaha, neither do I. But, what has initially brought you on this case again? Was it because you wanted to help or was it because you're curious how failtech had so much advanced technology years beyond any other corporation?

Ok, I posted my plan. Although, I do think we should wait for Dan's "gold mine" before taking full action. (although, we could still ask my 3 questions to Scimitar.)
EDIT: Also, there are no new files or folders in /experts, so the audio files must have been really unimportant.

I think the best way to tell Dan maybe to say that one of us (like me) has gone rogue and is going to do what scimitar has asked and you guys can't convince them otherwise. Thus they need to get out.
(Something along those lines. At least you can throw me under the bus or something)
I was actually hoping for something along those lines as well. We can assure him that we've inspected our own ranks thoroughly and everyone else agrees that was a Very Bad Idea. After all, I think there are probably still a few of us who watch but have yet to make any direct contact (like myself) who can go either way if and when we need them to.
EDIT: Or we can wait for Badgerconda's info.

New email from Dan. I think it might be the PM subtly suggesting to us that we don't need to reboot LAINSY to move forward with the story after all. Maybe we should all just chill until Dan's next update.
Email follows:
We've got some of the audio out, and it seems like some of them are just random rambling Genus has made. Nothing significant, so far, but I think we're about to hit a gold mine here. So just standby and I might have some work for all of you.
