I'll shy away from the whole Tony Manero thing and try, "Starsky and Hutch"?

Going by the date on the newspaper and the not stop looking - is it Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close? I read the book but haven't seen the movie yet.

Well, that particular scene was in all the trailers I remember seeing. Unlike the next:

(bold emphasis is mine). I feel as dense as that rock, so I guess I've never seen that movie. (But maybe I should research metamorphic mineral deposits?)

This one should go fast. Most any scene is memorable, if you've seen it.

One of my all time faves. Brilliant film. "It's a hard world for little things."

urthstripe is right -- The Night of the Hunter -- a creepy, old thriller.
Here are two of the more obvious shots I would've used if needed.

i tried searching on the first two (not tineye searches, but keywords like 'train' and 'christmas'), I just couldn't come up with anything to guess. I'll keep at it, if it really isn't some obscure art-house experiment. I'm getting that film noir mystery vibe, certainly not a comedy. Can I rule out horror?
