mpathytest: [Offline IM sent 1d and 12h ago] Hey! This isn't Evie, this is Emil. I'm trying to find Evie, and I think she was chatting with you recently? Sorry, I know it is weird for a guy to log into his girl's AIM and start sending messages to strangers, but she missed our 'if you miss it I will kill you' Sunday call, which she would never do. It's been our ritual ever since I moved out here and she always calls at 11 AM on the dot no matter WHAT. So it's really weird and I'm a little freaked out because she's not answering her cell and with everything going on… so, have you heard from her today?

ok, again, i'll delete tomorrow morning if this has been posted!

I was never under the impression that this was supposed to be a story told through a puzzle game. It's a social experiment. Things don't have to fit the strict definition provided by previous ARGs to be worthwhile.

In fact, I've sort of been questioning my interest in ARGs lately, and most of the problems I have with them don't apply to this game. It's good to see something actually different happening in a genre whose main attraction is how different it is from everything else.

In an interview linked somewhere, Jane said something to the effect of that we will all be the puppet masters. We are producing the content, not just reading about it from the two most active players. The whole thing with Nico seems to me to just be setup for the game world, and a token plot for the sake of getting a few more of us ufers to label it an ARG and join in. I wouldn't be surprised if we won't actually have to keep up with that very closely at all to participate. I can't even name half of the 8TSOC, and I'm not bothered about it. I'm more concerned with keeping track of other bloggers.

And I say that as someone who stops listening when someone says "social networking," and can't imagine why you'd put your diary somewhere that it can be read.

So what I'm saying is that for once, I have no game play concerns. I have had those for most normal ARGs I have started getting into (I'm building up quite a history of dropping out of games), but here, there's no upper limit on the game play. Everyone can have some, and every piece actually matters, because the game play is shaping the story yourself through your writing, and carrying the lessons learned into your life.

Sorry if it sounds like I am bashing ARGs. I'm not. I just think they aren't entirely reaching their potential because it is so high, and games like this which drastically change things are exactly the solution. I just don't really consider a daily check on discovered websites and puzzles I couldn't solve anyway to be "playing" anything.

Oh, and that's so not what "schizophrenic" means.

Sadness

Not to spoil any fun, but I have to say that I am honestly disappointed as of now, which I know is still very early in the game (considering it just started today). I thought things would really pick up, and nothing really has. Blogs are still just blogs, WHEN they are written, which isn't any more than before. The new website just does not grab me. A few people, along with myself don't really feel that the "ranking" system is all that interesting...nor do I really want to make it to the top.

The characters have been fun to interact with...and I think this "game" serves a very important topic that we are yes indeed dealing with, but as far as game-play goes...not very "fun" for me. Just sort of eh, interesting.

Also, some people that I have spread the word to, that are unaware of all the details and other happenings of the story...are lost on the new site. they just don't "get it" or get the purpose even after I explain it to the best of my ability...which is even weird for me.

Overall, I don't want to be a party pooper. I mean that. I have met a ton of amazing people in the last few weeks. I have been interested in working with all of you on "solving this thing" but I know a lot of us feel like....."um, huh?"

So I will be keeping up for the next few days and hope to see something happen. I agree that writing blogs, making videos, "car-pooling, ride a bike" (staxnet), just does not hit me in the right place....

Simply, I just don't know

Well I just wrote a new entry in LJ. I tried to submit it but kept getting a "BadResponse" error. Most of you can read my LJ anyway whether or not it actually makes it to the web site.

What I think might happen with this game is it's going to be us writing what we want, but after awhile they might connect an actual story with what we said and we will have to solve puzzles and different things with what we write and how we write it.

Actually, that's the point of WWO. She's stated that WWO is her first attempt at a world-changing game. We're supposed to be coming up with ideas now, so that they can implimented if WWO ever happens.

Yes, I think you are right. I will admit, however, to harboring some of the same "game play" concerns mentioned by Abilor. Then again, I am also intrigued by the broader social, community-building themes of the game (I don't mean to imply Abilor is not intrigued by this aspect of the game also).

I am concerned, however, that the topic chosen to explore these themes may be way too broad for a game that is apparently ending in two months. I am not sure that a meaningful plan or solutions for addressing a global oil crisis can be developed in that timeframe, even on a regional or local level.

I work on community planning projects as part of my job. I recently sat on a panel of stakeholders working together to prepare a habitat conservation plan that covered a single county. That process took nearly a decade.

I do not mean to suggest that the game, as it is, will not be a valuable exercise in exploring ways to harness the internet to solve real world social and political issues. I just wonder if that goal is best served with a game theme that is so broad, multi-faceted and pregnant with huge economic, political, environmental, and social consequences.

Starting a garden and tuning up bikes will not "solve" a global energy crisis.

I don't want to come across as a pessimist. On the other hand, I want to be pragmatic. I am going to be disappointed if I spend a lot of time on game the end result of which is bunch of "solutions" of the "start a carpool," "line dry your clothes," "ride a bike" variety.

Wel, let's clarify things a little, if you write a blog about Jennifer Aniston's new movie, you don't have to submit it. If you wrote a blog that is game material, then submit it so it can be scored.

Yep. They can keep better track of the entries that way.

If I recall from discussions around ARGFest, this is more of an exercise in the collective intelligence rather than an ARG in the ARG-sense (if you take the analogy by Brian from GMD and Susan from 42: an ARG is a story that has been broken into a bunch of little pieces and the players have to solve the puzzle(s) in order to story pieces and put them back together).

In a way, for WWO, I think the players are going to write the story themselves.

schizophrenia

If you are feeling schizophrenic, it's because this game seems split. I figure you have this whole fantasy-world-blogging thing going on, thats the big thing. And then you have the whole nico issue which is sounding more and more like an arg - I figure that you don't have to blog in the fantasy world to follow nico's story, and most people writing don't care about nico's story.

I think the game element might come in with Nico's story. After all, they surely won't just drop that, will they?

The part of me that will forever be a 15 year old playing dungeons and dragons in a basement full of swords, crystals, and R.A. Salvatore and David Eddings novels wonders, however, what happens here on out in terms of puzzle gameplay? Is there a "plot" we're going to be uncovering, problems to solve, codes to break, clandestine web sites, etc.? The reason I ask is that I'm having a great time playing sectorseven as well, and I'm wondering... Well, I'm just wondering. What do the rest of you think?

I was thinking the exact same thing. At the moment (especially since the site went live) I cant see how codes and puzzles will play into it, and if im 100% honest...I kinda felt a little dissapointed =\ and Im really not sure I can keep digging up useful information about oil so I can post it every day. Theres just no that info like that in the UK Sad
