Magpie reference again. Gut says this is linked.
Perhaps we ought to give Giles another poke...
I emailed him a while back, got no reply. Anyone else fancy it?

I found this connection with Cygnus and magpies to be interesting.
In Chinese mythology, the constellation Cygnus is the site of the once-a-year magpie bridge (Que Qiao) which connects the lovers Niu Lang and Zhi Nu (see Qi Xi).

Quote:
A young cowherd named Niulang ("the cowherd", the star Altair) happens across seven fairy sisters bathing in a lake. Encouraged by his mischievous companion the ox, he steals their clothes and waits to see what will happen. The fairy sisters elect the youngest and most beautiful sister Zhinü ("the weaver girl", the star Vega) to retrieve their clothing. She does so, but since Niulang has seen her naked, she must agree to his request for marriage. She proves to be a wonderful wife, and Niulang a good husband, and they are very happy together. But the Goddess of Heaven (in some versions Zhinü's mother) finds out that a mere mortal has married one of the fairy girls and is furious. (In another version, the Goddess forced the weaver fairy back to her former duty of weaving colorful clouds in the sky because she could not do her job while married to the mortal.) Taking out her hairpin, the Goddess scratches a wide river in the sky to separate the two lovers forever (thus forming the Milky Way, which separates Altair and Vega).
Zhinü must sit forever on one side of the river, sadly weaving on her loom, while Niulang watches her from afar and takes care of their two children (his flanking stars β and γ Aquilae).
But once a year all the magpies in the world take pity on them and fly up into heaven to form a bridge ("the bridge of magpies", Que Qiao) over the star Deneb in the Cygnus constellation so the lovers may be together for a single night, the seventh night of the seventh moon.
The seventh day of the seventh lunar month of the lunisolar calendar this year is 19 August. In 2005, it was 11 August.
I wonder, is there Anything happing 9 days from now?
Also this might just be a guess, but
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deneb
seems like ive heard that some where else, and i think it matches Cyg-X1

It seems tipsila was correct... Eric has government ties, but let them go before he got married:

Government training sounds interesting. Yet it's not what you do now?

Yeah, scribe is right. 11pm regardless of time zone. But, could we have someone in the USA test this? Roll your clock forward to 11th August 1pm and see if it reads 10h.
Ok, I tried it, and it said 9h 59m 59sec.. so, yep, 10h.

Keep your eyes peeled.
I just got an email from a Scorpio Wulf:

Yeah, scribe is right. 11pm regardless of time zone. But, could we have someone in the USA test this? Roll your clock forward to 11th August 1pm and see if it reads 10h.
When you roll it further than 11th Aug 11pm, it reads:

Launch initiated...
Scribe's initial reaction was 'not a product launch, I hope'. But I don't think it is.
All these references to Alien life... Mahasamparka being the latest, plus gate3, I think it's a launch of another kind.
I've tried google for 11th August, but nothing springs to mind.
Anyone else have any ideas? This is a little odd...

Sorry for the double post, I just worked out what the Javascript in the new pages does. It's basically been written to hide the fact that it doesn't actually to much at all - indeed, it's been "obfuscare"d
Summary: the code sets the final countdown date time as Sat Aug 11 2007 23:00:00 - 11pm, not 4pm as it's originally set at. Note that this is also 11pm your local time, as far as i can see.
All the preceding stuff with 'dateNow', 'dateNowServer' and if statements is completely static - you get the same result every time. hourDiff gets set to 5. dateAdjustment gets set to 24. dayAdjustment is never set to 1, so the only manipulation of dateFuture is this bit:
So, as with the leaked message file before, I assume the numbers buried in the code are more important than the message (or the countdown, in this case). But I'm still at a loss.

Cyg X-1 and X-3 refer to cosmic objects seen in the Cygnus constellation (the Swan). Both emit large amounts of x-rays, and have a good probability (pretty near certain for X-1) of being black holes. Here's some info on X1 and X3 yanked from Google.
Interestingly, the Cygnus constellation (link) is at a declination of +42.03 degrees. I wondered about cosmic co-ordinates before, but the friend I asked on them said they weren't of the right form. But I'm not convinced. Can anyone map the 2 locations we have on to the sky somehow? Maybe using the "cosmic north" or some kind of absolute measure?
Also, the backwards thing is definitely annoying me, like it's key to something. 11th August might be 11/8 here, but it's 8/11 in the US, and the way the numbers were written backwards through the stolen code suggests they should be read backwards, perhaps.

DelVillan.
I'm going to mess with some of those images tomorrow and see if I can nail anything.
Unfortunately, I won't be around for the eleventh thing. I'm going on vacation that week, so I doubt I'll be much help.
ETA: Highfivegame.com's image's alt text is "searching," and Gatethreeincident.com's is "locate." Pretty weird.
