Maybe it is literally closer than they once thought: from 135 parsecs to 118 parsecs.

I have an iPad version but it's no good as font sizes are adjustable and so won't be as reliable as an actual print copy (which have many different editions)

Okay, since we're still no closer I'll chuck in another suggestion, what about analysing and comparing the Pioneer Plaque with everything we've studied so far, to see if there's any correlation. Is it even worth a shot?

Seven Pillars of Wisdom has had multiple printings, so they wouldn't be consistant from edition to edition. But don't I wish that would work, I'm dying to know what's behind that wall.

That's reaching. Different editions and publishers have different pagination. You'll never get a single answer that way.
