I swear, Alyssa is going to cause me to have a nervous breakdown one of these days!

Yesterday she send me this mail:

Ms. Midnight,

I'm sorry I didn't write you back again last night. No, I didn't get
much sleep. I've been thinking really hard about what you said, and
you're right. Josh wouldn't want me to put myself in danger, even to
try and help him. To think, this time yesterday I was ready to run
off without even considering if it was really him or not! I really,
really, really wanted it to be true. But it's not what I want that
matters.

I've reread the letters he sent me, and to be honest I'm still unsure.
He doesn't mention anything specific that only he or I would know,
but he doesn't sound "phony" either. To be sure, it sounds like he's
in a hurry, or maybe preoccupied with something else, though I guess
it could have been written by just about anyone.

... (removed a small bit here, where Alyssa tells me that she got fired from her new waitress job)...

The fellow from the moving company just called me. He said if I was
really curious, he would take me out to where they delivered the stuff
from the beach. I told him I am, and we're leaving around 11am our
time. It's about a 45 minute drive, so hopefully I'll have some news
for you all by this afternoon! Wish me luck!

And then, just when I thought I had convinced her not to go after Josh... she sends me this:

Dear Midnight,

I went with the nice man from the moving company to the warehouse, but
I did not find anything that would be of help. I was sad, because I
wanted to help track down the evil people who killed that poor
vagrant. I guess I will just have to leave that duty to the proper
authorities.

I have decided that because there is nothing left for me to look for
here, I am going to meet with Josh at the SIC. Please don't worry, I
am sure I will be safe and happy here. I promise to write as often as
I get the opportunity!

Got a really bad feeling about this mail... This sudden change of mind doesn't sound right at all...

For one thing, she always starts her letters with "Ms.Midnight". Not "Dear Midnight"

I'm not sure of the exact etiquette involving e-mails to multiple parties. For me, it'd make more sense to have the posts dividing up by person (which I did) but I'm not sure if that's accepted standard. If it's not, and my multiple posts otherwise annoy you, I'm sorry. Tell me about it and I might just change, too.

Oh, and the inclusion of my e-mails are just for completeness, so I can give the character some context for their words. I kept the e-mails in chronological order, but if you'd rather have the character e-mails first, tell me that too.

Here's a set of e-mails I've exchanged with Sandra. I wrote both my e-mails before Sandra responed.

My e-mails

Hello "Purple"-

I'm not sure how open I can be on these channels.
Paranoia rubs off, and I've been associating with some
pretty paranoid people.

I feel like I can contact you because Josh described
you as a friend. Cassandra was also certain that you
could be trusted.

I've been speaking with both of them, but mostly with
Cassandra. I'll try to convey quickly what Cassandra
has told me over our few contacts. I hate to be so
guff, but Cassandra was sure of the exact time frame
we had to act.

Cassandra had a gift for prophecy and vision, right?
Well, she's starting to see some terrible visions.

There are some indications that the SIC has control of
the one called Marcus. They have both Marcus and
Jessica under their control.

I wasn't able to be there, but you spoke of Jessica as
being soulless. Well now, she's been plugged into the
machine.

Subject 13a, who I believe to be Marcus, is on a mad
quest to purge the world of "evil." He want to secure
peace and security. But I fear it's the security and
peace of death.

Cassandra described the emergence of an "Ender." A
being who was going to destroy all life in the world.

That's right. All life.

I'm sure it seems like hyperbole, and you might think
I have no reason to trust.

But how do I know of Cassandra? How do I know of
Marcus? Please, please trust me "purple". Not for me,
but to make sure Cassandra isn't alone anymore.

I'm not sure what it is we can do now. Cassandra has
given up hope. While I have respect for her abilities,
and definately for her, I have to try to do something
until the eleventh hour.

If Cassandra can be yanked from Aegis, the whole thing
will come apart. I hope at least. Cassandra told me
Aegis was based on her.

It's our best lead.

Until Aegis is gone, Wilson will keep coming for the
Societas, and taking each of you, one by one. She'll
plug you into the machine, and you'll become a tool to
be directed at "evil."

You'll become a tool of the Ender.

I just don't know what we can do, but it'd be best to
try to brain storm. A. Jacobson was our best hope to
free Cassandra, and she turned on Josh.

Anyway, I'm sure I've left something out, or you might
have questions. Or even more likely you'll have
information to share, if you're willing.

Don't believe Josh.

He's being used by the SIC, and more than he's being
influenced by someone with the ability to control the
actions of others.

I would guess him to be Marcus, but I don't know.

Sandra, 13a is trying to lure you into a trap. He's
trying to bring you into the SIC so he can use you as
a tool.

Here's an exerpt from a recent conversation I had with
Cassandra. Her connection to Aegis and the internet
allows her to relay the words of other over the
internet.

The Ender will use you. He will force you to create
his mad vision of perfection.

Don't trust the words of Josh. He is in the hands of
SIC. They are torturting him.

You don't need to get off the Chimerastil to talk to
Cassandra. It's possible to use the Internet to talk
to her.

She has an e-mail address "Subject4354h(at)aol.com". She
uses the AOL Instant Messager screen name
"Subject4354h" to talk to us.

Dear friend,

Please, rest easy; I believe you. I knew a friend of Josh's would not
give up
so easily on him, and if you have been contacted by Cassandra then she
trusts
you, too. And if she trusts you--what you tell of your conversations
rings
true--then I trust you as well.

She can not, will not ever lie. Yes, she has the gift of foresight, but
that's
not all. She can see into people, into their souls. If she is afraid
of
Jessica and Marcus, there is good reason.

If she says something like "The end of life" then she's not talking in
hyperbole. She once saw something that scared her enough to slit her
own
wrists. I never got to share that vision with her -- maybe she thought
she was
protecting me.

Now that she is trapped within the SIC, and there is no way for me to
reach her.
As long as I continue to take the Chimerastil, we cannot share the
dream. As
long as I continue to hide, she will forever be out of reach.

AEGIS is a monster that grows stronger the more it devours. I was
shocked that
Wilson would let Scott die, but she was one who would chew off her foot
to save
her leg without complaint. There is no way we could destroy AEGIS with
Cassandra and Josh still inside. Unless that's Eliza's plan, but she
would not
tell me such things.

Josh spoke of another, like us, within the ranks of the SIC. Although
she has
betrayed Josh once, I sense that she might not be totally unsympathetic
to our
plight. After all, she must realize that if she shares our gift, she
also
shares our fate.

I'm afraid the remnants of the Societas Solanum will not be able to
help...we
have our own situation to deal with. Perhaps those friends of Eliza's
can be
persuaded to help. They have not done anything more than offer advice
until
this point. I do not trust them. But the time for action grows near;
I'm
afraid hiding won't be an option any longer.

Thank you for writing. I may not get another chance to write to you,
so please
tell Cassandra I've never forgotten her.

It's Sandra, again. The truth of the matter is that no one else is
here to
respond. When I told you of the "Remnants of Societas Solanum," I
speak only
of myself. I am the Solanum. I am Astrostole. I am the last.

I have tried that email address you sent me, but I have not heard back.
I'm
afraid that it might be too late, because I know if there was any way
to
respond to me she would have. Unless, again, she's trying to protect
me, but
it's too late for that.

It's too late for everything but goodbyes.

I know why I was abandoned--I listened to Josh. I stopped taking the
Chimerastil. It doesn't matter anymore, the chase is over. I don't
care if
they catch me. Just once more, I want to be able to sleep, and go to
those
places I remember where I was happy. I didn't dream last night, but it
takes a
while for the to wear off. If the SIC does not take me today, then I
hope I
shall dream tonight and perhaps see Cassandra once more.

That is all I have left to live for. Then this Ender can take me and
the world
and do with it what it wills, I don't care.

I've been communicating with a few of the characters, and unfortunately nothing seems to be coming out to help us prevent the end. Still a lot of interesting tidbits about our eventual doom.

I know you don't have any reason to believe me. Heck,
I've been talking to Cassandra and she seems
incoherent.

I'm taking a big risk, telling you these things.

But, Alex, what I'm certain of is that the SIC and
Rebekah Wilson are lying to you. And if what Cassandra
tells me has any chance of being true...

You heard Cassandra's voice. They try to convince you
other wise. I certainly haven't heard Cassandra's
voice, but she communicates to me through... I'd like
to say, but I'm paranoid of those who might be spying
on this message. And frankly, I'm paranoid of you. I
don't want you to take away how she speaks to us.

Did you ever wonder what they did to Joe? Where is he?
Ever heard of a subject 7467d?

They take people, people with talents true, but still
people. They've been forcing them to do terrible
things.

I know you don't have any reason to trust me. But
poke, and prod. The SIC has a rotten core.

Just where has Rebekah Wilson been before she directed
the SIC?

Be careful around the subjects 13. They're more
dangerous than you know. I'd love to tell you more,
but I'm risking enough as it is.

Why did Janice Polito commit suicide?

Just don't trust your senses. Don't trust your mind.

And don't trust the SIC.

Mr. Snorlison,

I know. They're watching me. I'm next.

I'm scared, but what else can I do? I left
4354h's analog connection alone. I don't
think they know about that. I know about
her emails, her IMs. It was my job to track
them down and stop them, before. But not
anymore.

Cassandra. Her name is Cassandra. But she
hasn't been herself lately. I find her
repeating the...the...the lessons they are
putting 7467d...JOSH...through. I gave
him to them, but I didn't mean to! I thought
he was just going to release Cassandra.
I could let them out, blame security for
their lapse. But she knew and she was
there.

And I saw the files...she killed
8370d...Scott...she filled him with
Twilight, and watched as his mind dissolved
and his heart stopped beating. Oh God,
how could someone do that to another
human being?

I know about 13a. I have stood next to it.
Him? Can something so horrible be human?

It was a boy, once. You can see that much.
But his body is shrivelled and misshapen.
His head--it looks like something tried to
escape through the top of his skull!

They have more connections to him than any.
He alone uses up half a dozen AEGIS interface
lines, and there's talk of more. More! How
much bandwidth could they need?

And what about the girl, the one they call
13B? She's still not responding to anything,
she just sits there and stares out the window
on the hypothermia chamber, a low Delta wave
throbbing on the EEG. But there's something
working behind those eyes...intelligent...
malicious...

I've felt 13A. I've heard the command, felt
myself obey. What will happen if these two
were to work together?

Her will, his command?

Are these the thoughts that went through
Janice's mind before set herself on fire?

I don't trust myself. I can't.

What manner of hell have I helped open?

There have been some interesting changes at vagabondssojourn be sure and look at the source code. Don't know where or if it even leads anywhere yet.
