noob meets slumberil

Okay, so I just stumbled upon Slumberil earlier today. Actually, I was pretty confused until I did a google search... so I actually just stumbled on ARGs today, too. I just read the guidelines & player tutorial here, so I'm a farm fresh noob.

I looked around the site (Slumberil.com), googled some stuff, and read all the threads about it here, but I'm still somewhat lost. I think I get the basics, but things are still pretty much a blur to me. If someone could give me a brief summary of the story so far, I'd really appreciate it.

I know that noobs are annoying and all that, but I'll try to be as pleasant as I possibly can. This is a completely new world for me, but I'd like to think I'm a quick learner. I might ask a lot of annoying questions in the process, though (but at least that shows I'm trying).

Speaking of annoying questions, I've got a few already...

1) Is this an official Matrix ARG? It is from what I gather, but I just want to make sure.

2) Is Slumberil really "dead," or is it more "dormant"? If it is supposed to tie in with MxO, I don't see why they would end it so soon, seeing as the final game isn't even out yet.

3) Does anyone have any recommendations of things I should read, sites I should go to, or things I should do in order to take me from supernoob up to just normal noob?

I mean, nothing has happened over the last - what? - 6 weeks, and, sadly, I have no reason to believe anything ever will :( Anyway, I saw a bunch of forums (fori?) get archived today, so I thought maybe we should send slumberil that way as well?

I was re-reading Pandora's Elysium message (ok, yes, I'm obsessed); specifically, this:

Open your eyes Redpills, do not be fooled by promises of bliss and plenty. There is no return to the deceitful ignorance that you once called your life. Elysium as "they" have come to call your instrument of destruction, is a fatal placebo. If you make the journey to Wright Research you will not return, "they" are waiting for those redpills, foolish enough to seek its embrace. There is no happy ending, not as advertised by this vehicle of doom, the real, the truth you know is harsh and cold but at least its freedom, and a chance at a better tomorrow.

I think "Redpill" is MxO slang for "unplugged". Evidentally, the unplugged people can now come back to the matrix (under the truce) and be guaranteed relative safety by the machines (again, please someone correct me here).

So, that would mean that the unplugged people, while doing stuff inside the matrix to further their cause, will be approached by Elysium people and offered the yellow pills. I sort of envision a bunch of steak-eating Cyphers, eager to be re-inserted into the matrix. I originally thought that they would actually be deceived by the Elysium people, but this: "the real, the truth you know is harsh and cold but at least its freedom" seems to suggest that Pandora is warning Redpills not against the deceipts of Elysium, but against choosing the fake but comfortable matrix existence over the ugly reality - as in, this isn't a drug for the unplugged people, it's more along the lines of something Cypher would have been given to be put back in the matrix (and how does that work, anyway? they actually stick those people into pink pods and reconnect them?). Which, I suppose, is rather weird, because slumberil (a pill that, as far as I understand, helps people "not feel the urge to wake up") doesn't really seem like a product that all that many already unplugged people would be interested in checking out :?

Metacortex and slumberil

Just wanted to see if anybody decoded that binary body on the metacortex site (www.metacortechs.com) in the wallpaper section.

Anyway, I dont have any text recognition software so i dont want to punch in the entire string by hand. And also, has anybody else been able to put themselves on the "beta" list for the metacortex gaming console?

I came upon this site from the testimonials page of slumberil, the first employee saying he worked for a company called metacortex. Metacortex.com looks to be a legit company, but metacortechs.com, with that green hue.......too much to hope for.

This is the secure area that on the day of launch contained all of this stuff (thanks again, colin).

There was also that curiously leet password used by Pandora: "w4k3up".

Since /private on slumberil.com started displaying this message yesterday: "Dead End Look Elsewhere", I am inclined to believe that we are supposed to keep trying to log in to /secure.
So far, Neil has only used "neil" as his username, I believe (?), which doesn't necessarily mean that only Neil has a valid login to /secure.

Entering in any number will bring up a different town and specific coordinate...

Entering in 555/555 and slecting slums won't bring up the same thing if you enter 222/222 and selecting slums again.

Further to all the items we found in trash (If you haven't seen it yet, go here and then come back) I was trying to do various things related to nmap and the matrix

obviously the first thing is to look for open parts.. and there are quiete a few which should have been locked down..

Now what I did next is a bit shaky, and I believe we're peeking behind the curtain. I encourage anyone NOT to take this further until we figure out what's going on, if you're new to ARG's please note that it's not right to peek behind the curtain..

So I did a whois on the new website, and apparently it's an alias for slumberil, but the www part of the same server is owned by a real website (a law firm) that's been around since 2000. From there there's a link to a hosting site, so apparently I've only managed to uncover where slumberil is hosted (Could have done it in easier ways!!)

Now it seems to be a dedicated server and I assume the ports were left open by mistake. I did manage to do, and find, other things but for now I'll leave it so nobody does anything 'bad'

If the PM's are reading this, please close any ports you don't want us to play with. The whole nmap thing is just inviting us to try a SSH exploit on yout server, so if the ports stay open, the hacking tools will start running :wink:
