[PUZZLE] e=mc cubed

WARNING: DEAD END

On the pastures of Whipsmart, one of the cows is holding a chalk board with the statement "e=mc CUBED". Anyone with even a cursory knowledge of recent science will know that e most certainly does not equal mc cubed but mc squared, so this started some alarm bells in my head.

e=mc cubed... we've been dealing with a different kind of 'e' before in relation to Perplex City, so maybe it's that e and not 'energy'. And perhaps mc is actually MC (Mind Candy/Mission Control).

So, we rearrange the statement:

e=mc 3 to MC= 3 _/e (cube root of e)

And get the following number: 1.395612425

On a leap of faith, add a zero at the beginning and ignore the decimal place and we get a phone number:

01395 612425

However, it doesn't work. "This phone number has not been recognised." It was possible the final '5' had been rounded up, so I tried the same number with a 4 at the end instead. No luck there either.

It seems too good to be a coincidence, though. I post this here so maybe someone can run with it and find the true answer. I'm sure there's something in this.

(BTW, sorry if this is posted improperly - in the wrong place or such - but I wasn't totally sure where was best)

Problems With User Created Puzzle Images

Don't know if this happened to anyone else, but I created a puzzle on welovepuzzles.com and uploaded an image to go with it. The image uploaded fine on the creation screen, however, when I view the puzzle now, the image is gone! Needless to say, this makes it a bit difficult to solve the puzzle.

The original image was in PNG format. I also added a tiny bit of steg to attach my name to the image. I'm not sure if this caused the problem, but it is weird that the image would upload and display fine in one place, but not another.

Anyone else have this happen to them? I have several other puzzle to upload, but I don't want to risk having a bunch of broken puzzles associated with me. Would be nice if we could remove old puzzle at some point, but I digress. If nothing else, I may try going to a non-steged JPG or something. I would hope that works. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Found something new on Caine's journal?

Hi guys,

I was just clicking through links from last season, stopped on Caine's journal and happened to notice three little round things above the block of "about me" type text. I clicked on one of them and got a pop up talking about the board game that then sent me off looking for "puzzle stones" hidden in pxc pages and giving little puzzles to solve. I came over here to see if anyone had found a stone that was giving me trouble, but when I searched the forums several times, I couldn't find where anyone had mentioned anything about it. Is this a new development? Or something so old that there aren't records on it anymore? If the latter, then  Just thought I'd point it out.

If anyone's forgotten where to find Caine's journal, it's here: http://www.theoozezone.com/

Big Weekend Primer Timetable Puzzle

Denchfield has apparently got hold of a timetable from the silburngriggs website. Here's his page:
http://pauldenchfield.typepad.com/paul_denchfield/2007/05/challenging.html

The timetable itself can be found at:
http://www.silburngriggsmining.com/projectfia/db2902f7-c011-419f/primertimetable-1.pdf

I've looked at it, and:
On the Thursday the 17th page, there are some letters which are underlined. They are:
eaogengntabakl

Anagram, perhaps?

EDIT: On the Wednesday page 'live music from' is also underlined, just incase it's relevant.

[ Edit - Despoilerised - no need to spoiler stuff that's not a final solve or would ruin a puzzle for someone. This is more general info that you've posted for the good of all, have despoilerised below also, just helps keep things readable- MikeyJ ]

Apolyton Image Puzzle

In the post here Violet posted a .zip full of images from Apolyton at http://www.violetunderground.com/images/apolyton.zip , but they're scrambled, and it seems that only we can unscramble them.

I had a go - it's mess, there're bits of fake data on there, and it's generally fiddly, my vague attempt is at http://compsoc.dur.ac.uk/~dm/pxc/Apolyton.jpg for a sane 330kb messy jpg, or http://compsoc.dur.ac.uk/~dm/pxc/Apolyton.gif for a 2Mb less messy .gif. It's still a bit of mess, and there're a few bits left over, the only text on them is in a large grey circle and says 'Photo Colour Explosion', I think half of that's fake and it should go down the bottom right somewhere, the rest are just blanks.

[ Edit - Despoilerised see here for why - MikeyJ ]

[SOLVED] Postal Delays Puzzle

Since we should be talking about this in the puzzle section:

Violet posts that there is a way to test what sort of parcels are being delayed by the Post Office.

What combinations of parcel variables (destination, weight, size, speed, additions) lead to delays? I know a few of us have already sent packages out, but we should post our results here instead of in the general section.

MOD EDIT : Actual testing system here - Poozle

Violet Underground - Plumbing Puzzle [Solved]

In case anyone hasn't seen it yet, head on over to www.violetunderground.com to hear about Violet's plumbing situation.

Then be ready to piece together her apartment building. Here's my analysis so far:

Plan 5: The basement
Plans 6,7,11: floors of the building
Plan 2: ground floor
Plans 1,3,9,10: Outside walls of the building
Plans 8,4: interior walls

Plans 1,3: Front and back of building
Plans 9,10: Sides of building

I call the side of the building with the entrance the Front (West Caldera Street)
However, I have no idea how they fit together. Plus, I'm at work and can't really print everything and try to tape it all together. So it's up to you guys.

If I think of anything else, I'll post it.

Also, sorry if this is in the wrong place.
We Love Puzzles: Mr. Pennybag's Cipher (purple)

Ok, this one is driving me freakin' nuts! I know it has something to do with
Monopoly

but I just can't figure out how the grid dimensions and the numbers relate to it at all.

If anyone can give me a hint, I would be much obliged.

Daily Puzzle 3/30 Kakuro

OK, i've never had problems like this before.... not with a kakuro at least. here's what i can see:

on the left side, the puzzle must add to 5 horizontaly, and the 13 (vert) makes it be 9 and 4 (anything lower than a 9 in the top row would make the 2nd number higher than a 5, and it's cant.), so the 5 is made up of (4/1). the bottom 12 (can't use 9, 6 cant' be 3+3) can be either (8/4) or (7/5)>>>if 7/5 is used, then 6 is (1/5) and 1 is allready used in that coloum and that can't be. so then 6 is(2/4)

now for the hard part. the 14 above the 12. we've used 8, so that leaves (9/5) the problem with that is it connects to the 11, and (9/2) makes the 29 unsolveable.

Anyone know what in the hell i'm missing here? all the comments are about how easy this is, and it's a frigging red. thanks much for your help.
okay... so my answer is not being accepted and I don't know why...

843|752|961
697|134|285
521|698|473
---------------
435|861|792
762|943|518

This is the second time this has happened with a sudoku daily puzzle...

Maybe it's a problem on my end?
Crosswords

Having exhausted my supply of other Wordplay-category puzzles, I turned to Crosswords. I'd never really given them much thought before. Although I've enjoyed the five that they have a great deal, even *if* I can't solve 'em.

However, I have to wonder about PDF Crossword #3 (which is labeled as 001 on the PDF.)

Is there an error of some sort in it? I can't get 20 down, 25 across, 26 down, 29 across, and 5 down to merge together, regardless of how many different synonyms I know.

Has anyone else tried this puzzle? Am I just missing something, or is there a glitch?

Cidouri, Kakuro, Sudoku...

How many of the "Japanese" puzzles actually count towards our Solved Puzzles score? I went through a good number of Cidouri and a few Sudoku yesterday, and I realized that my solved score wasn't going up. Then I tried a couple of cipher and number trivia category puzzles, and they went up easily.

Do you think Mind Candy is only counting puzzles that they personally create, and not puzzles that can be mass produced easily with computer programs? I'm okay with it if that's the case, as it makes it more realistic that a human could get through them all (wouldn't be too hard to have a computer generate a couple thousand Cidouri puzzles in a short amount of time, after all.)
