[S2] [Cards Set] #066 - Born Free

Alas, no scanner because it's at the university and I am not.

Front

Hollywood is full of stars from around the world, but it can often be surprising to learn which countries they're really from. Can you match these actors to their correct nationalities?

Kim Cattrall
Mel Gibson
Russell Crowe
Jean Reno
Audrey Hepburn
Charlize Theron
Michael J Fox

Belgian
New Zealander
South African
Canadian
American
English
Spanish/Moroccan

Back

The Dice (October 11 - November 10)

While you have a reputation for being a risk-taker, those close to you know that you are always very carefully calculating the odds. Srendipity follows you wherever you go, though it is sometimes difficult to tell whether it is fate that smiles on you or if you simply have a knack for social engineering.

Still, when you lose, you tend to lose in a big way. Although Dice are very conscious of risk, you're also a sucker for the romance of a long shot, and will sometimes make poor decisions out of misplaced optimism. For this reason, Dice tend to do poorly in business and should avoid responsibility for finances whenever possible. Many Dice wisely live with their parents long after they have reached adulthood.

Dice are very gregarious and social, and in fact live to be with other people. Dice should avoid relationships with homebodies such as Spiders or Mazes, as they can't end well. Dragons are the best life partners for you, though such relationships are always volatile. You are best suited for careers in creative fields, such as puzzle development, drama, or cooking.
[S2] [Dice Set] #071 The Cattle King

Front:

Bill had invited his flatmates Rob and Corey around to his family farm for the holidays. Having spent the day with his family whilst the others looked around the grounds, Bill was now sitting on the front porch relaxing and sipping a glass of Pinot Noir. The sun was just starting to set when Rob and Corey came up to him looking somewhat concerned. "We've just been out by your cattle pens. We noticed you'd used 17 fences to create 6 equal sized square pens. But the fences are all looking very worn and rusty. Won't it cost you a lot to replace them all?" "We'll be fine. We worked out a way to build 6 pens of equal size, though not necessarily the same size as the current pens, using fewer fences?" What's the smaller number of fences needed to build the new cattle pens?

Perplex City Academy
Subsidiary Study Modules: 12a Earth Studies
Module Four: Technology
Course Coordinator: Clementine Friday

Earth technology is, in most fields, very like a rather backward version of Perplexian technology. Their medicine, for example, is quite clumsy. Even their much-loved cars require significant input from the drivers (although it is hard to see, from their technological capabilities in other fields, why this is the case).

Most striking of all is their lack of keys. How Earth people manage their day-to-day like without keys is somewhat mysterious. Portable communication tools do exist, but the universal functionality and compatibility necessary for a workable system of key integration is notably lacking.

Sample exam question:
Compare and contrast one of the following Earth inventions with its nearest Perplexian counterpart: (a) the magnetic compass and the Atkins-Archer wherebywhy; (b) the personal computer and the key; (c) cod liver oil and malt and Whipsmart Ice Quantum Cherry flavour.

[S2] #073 - Satellites of Love

Unfortunately, I am not near a scanner or I'd put some pictures here. The back of the card:

It's kinda like a letters page. First one, Letter of the Week, says...

Dear Rinaldo,
Some time ago, I gave a girl at school a puzzle that, when solved, revealed my deep and passionate feelings for her. However, in the weeks that have passed, she hasn't solved it. This has somewhat dampened my affections for her, as I thought she was quite a bit cleverer than that. Clearly she is not the girl I thought she was! Now I worry that she will hit the solve and try to pursue a relationship I no longer desire. What should i do?
Signed
All Out Of Love

Dear All Out
This is a nasty pickle, isn't it? It's a pity for you you're not a better judge of character. Your best bet might be to have a discreet talk with one of her best friends and get the friend to wipe the puzzle from her key (and dispose of any related physical objects she may have created). Then you have to hope the girl doesn't remember enough of the puzzle to reconstruct it, which she probably won't, if she's as dull as you believe. I suppose you could just gently tell her you've withdrawn the puzzle and its message, but if you had the social wherewithal to do that, you wouldn't be sending girls puzzles they couldn't solve as love notes, would you?

[S2] [Dice Set] #072 Cubicals

Front:

Which two of the six patterns above could be cut out and folded up into cubes which are identical?

Back:

Perplex City Academy
Subsidiary Study Modules: 12a Earth Studies
Module Three: Culture
Course Coordinator: Bluebell Withers

Earth has many distinct forms of recognised culture, including: youth culture, low culture, popular culture and drug culture. Earth people chose to participate in culture on a regular basis, many believing it is good for their health and well being. The watching of television dramas is heavily promoted in the media, for example, with many magazines devoted entirely to this hobby.

The appetite for drama can be so great at times that there are often terrible 'script droughts', when writers simply cannot produce enough raw material to meet the demand for drama. In these circumstances Earth citizens are forced to join together, taking turns to have their lives filmed as they live together in specially built houses, making up the drama as they go along.

Many younger people choose to expand their minds further by practicing their reaction times and problem-solving skills with electronic games - similar to the ones we enjoy here in Perplex City.

Sample exam question:
How is horticulture distinct from all other kinds of Earth Culture?

The Maze (November 11 - December 10)

You are a very complicated individual, existing on several mental planes at once, and it is very difficult for you to reveal your true self to anyone. As a result, it is hard for you to form meaning ful relationships with other people, preferring instead to keep to yourself. Once you have become close to someone, the bond tends to last until the grave; nonetheless, many Mazes go to the grave without ever forming as true attachment to another person.

Mazes often have difficulty focusing on events around them, because you are running too many thoughts in parallel. This makes you look like a complete lunatic to pretty much everyone else. All Mazes require a place or activity for a safe retreat during times of stress and must vigilantly defend it from invasion.

You should avoid relationships with Dice and Hands. Your ideal life partner would be another Maze or a Wave, whose serenity will help to calm your mental turmoil.

Careers in which you are happiest are those where you can exercise your formidable mental acuity in solitude. Mazes make legendary mathematicians, security engineers, and bureaucrats.
[puzzle] #80 Cruel and unusual

"Once upon a time, a particularly cruel dictator with an overactive imagination devised a punishment for four of his prisoners. He buries the four in a line up to their heads in the ground, with a wall separating them. they were all buried facing the wall so they could only see what was in front of them, so Dave can see Bella and Charlie, and Charlie can see Bella but not Dave.

the dictator then placed hats on top of the prisoners' heads as in this picture. The prisoners knew that there were two black hats and two white hats, but they didnt know the colour of their own hat. If one of the prisoners could correctly say what colour is on their hat, they'd all be freed.

Which prisoner ended up saving the day?
#093 - Crossed Wires - Solution/Java Code

Here's a simple java program I wrote to figure out the answer...

Not that it's a super-hard puzzle, but I'm naturally lazy and couldn't be arsed working it all out... it's more just a very simple exercise in OO.

Anyway.. just in case anyone is in the least interested attached is all the files necessary to run the thing.. just unzip it into a folder somewhere and via the command line (unix/windows/whatever figure it out yourself):

cd [folder with the java/class files in]
java -cp . Lights [time]

where [time] is the time of day to start the clock from i.e. "06:35"

Source code is included.

#066 [Ivy] Lost in Mockba

Card author - Caine.

It's a photo of a tattoo on a girl's hip. The tattoo is of a wolf's head which is surrounded by the words 'ЧЕЛОВЕК ЧЕЛОВЕКУ ВОЛК' and the question is 'What does this tattoo say?'.

(Sorry - I don't have a scanner so can someone else do the honours please?)

The tattoo is in Russian and an online translator gave me the following:
ЧЕЛОВЕК - Abbr Per.; Pers. N Mas; Person; Human; Being; Individual; Fellow; Soul; Spirit; Subject; Personage; Head; Body; Cleanskin; Hominid; Jack; Joker; Kipper; Party; Wallah; Wight; Bird; Card; Human being; Bet; Bone; Fellow creature; Bod; Bones; Devil; Dowser; Tabernacle.
ВОЛК N. Wolf

It couldn't translate ЧЕЛОВЕКУ and when I tried to translate the whole phrase it came up with Dog eat Dog which isn't correct. So is there anyone out there who speaks Russian?
