[INFO] DVDs of The Host now out

The DVD set of The Host is out now. I recommend anyone who missed this movie to give it a look. The director is stunningly brilliant (as I think I've said in every post about the film). The actress who plays the daughter is excellent as well.

The DVD set has a whole slew of extras with interviews about the making of the film. Director Bong speaks in great detail about making the film.

I think the film was made for a budget of $11 million, at least that was the figure given in one of the interviews. Given the amount of money they had to work with, the accomplishment of this film, with the complex CG shots, is all the more impressive.

I'm glad that the film did so well in the US. I think that the Monster Hunters campaign was very successful in spreading the word. I know that I would not have watched this film, or any of Director Bong's movies otherwise. Now, I'm a true and loyal fan.

[OT] Bong Joon- Ho and Memories of Murder

My local video store has a shelf with staff picks. I noticed Memories of Murder was a top recommendation and after seeing how brilliant this director was with The Host, I decided to rent it.

Memories of Murder is a brilliant and heartbreaking film. Based on a true story of the first known serial killer in South Korea, it tells the story of the investigation. Part of the intensity of the story is from the disparity of the local rural detectives, their training and the way they live from that of a detective from Seoul. All the acting is impressive.

I recommend that any MHC members who enjoyed The Host watch Memories of Murder.

I heard that Bong Joon-Ho is going to be making films here in America. I can't wait to see what his next project is, I expect a long and productive career from him. As the saying goes, his talent leaps off the screen - only in a way that isn't cliche.

Good story, excellant player manipulation, great realism. My only complaint is that it had a few too many pieces and a bit of a weak resolution. But make no mistake, if you guys ever do another ARG, I want in.

I can't wait for the next and I'm looking forward to a Dave S./Jan L. collaboration (hint hint hint).

OMG - I so second that! As for immersion, Jan taught me how & Dave help me do it better! Thanks to the both of you! Heck, I am still worried about how Matt is taking it all :)

But to have the 2 of them collaborate on a game, OMG!!!!! That would really just HAVE to be THE ARG that all future ARGs would be judged against!

But I think both of them deserve a little time to have a life too, so you guys collaborate & develop for a bit before you completely drag me under, okay :) ?

cather - i was in the same spot. i fell into the rabbit hole but RL was really keeping me away from being immersed. i kept up by reading the updates in uF but wasn't going to the websites.....until ARGFest.

i quickly caught myself up by reading (and archiving) website stuff, got more active in puzzle solving, interacting with the characters, and you know on the last day i was freaking out at work at noon, on the phone with Red to make sure i could "hear" what was happening on the video (and sooo happy that my work computer could at least show the video - since it's old and so many sites are blocked).

Dave et al can so easily suck me in.....

I can't wait for the next and I'm looking forward to a Dave S./Jan L. collaboration (hint hint hint).

I had the privelege of sitting with Dave Szulborski at the ARGfest dinner, and the subject of the 5PERs came up. "A minute to learn, a lifetime to master" -- that summed it up for me, as the puzzle *method* is rather simple in concept but I didn't seem to have the skillset for solving them. (He said his proofreader had a similar difficulty with them.)

The fold-over puzzles were fun too, once we got the methodology. I built a spreadsheet of translation tables for each flap and many of the flap combinations -- the set-up for that took a lot of tedious work, but the effort was worth it for subsequent coded messages which I could just plug into Excel to solve.

I have to admit that in the past I have labelled many of his puzzles from CTW as "evil", but with MHC he has won me back as a fan. The variety was good, the difficulty range was good, the in-game-ness was good, and the *repetition* of puzzle types was a blessing!

While I didn't immerse as much into the MHC world as I did with Who Is Benjamin Stove, I did recognize the WiBS feel in the websites and the writing. In my mind, Jim Gunshanan will always be Tucker, so it was a bit distracting to hear the same "voice" for Derek and Matt. But I knew from day one that there was quality behind the game, so thanks for being there.

yeah, i swore I wasn't gonna play, then I swore I was only going to lurk for the puzzles, then by the end I was watching a "live" webcam and talking about the characters. Good job, game!

I'd like to add my thanks as well.. I would never have though that body-modification, Bigfoot, and the Vietnam war could be intertwined together, but that just shows what I know! It was fun!!
