Eldritch Existentialism

I had mentioned in chat (IRC #stfeline) earlier this week that I was feeling a need to sum up the current state of things in the EE world, a tugging at my mind to reflect on what brought us here at the beginning, and an urge to ponder our next steps. I wasn't looking for closure, yet, but I wanted to start the discussion of whether our time in limbo has an end in sight.

I started to post, then backed off, then jotted down my thoughts, then stored my notes away. When dante started a new thread called "ambition and fracture in ARGs" over in the General Meta Discussion area, I thought that was a sign that I wasn't the only one feeling unrest.

So it turned out that his thread wasn't about Eldritch Errors, but it did make me want to return to my question about the state of things for us over here in Ephemeral. (there sure are a lot of E's in this post)

Are we ready for closure? Are we ready to spark some new story on our own? Are we forever waiting for someone else to do all that hard work of building a narrative for us to play with?

I pondered what might happen if I created a new account on the Outpost and began to post as a new Sentry. What would I want to accomplish? I have to be honest, an evil side of me considered taking it to full hoax levels, luring people into believing that the game was starting up again, with a real puppetmaster behind the scenes, and then waiting for a peak emotional moment to reveal the hoax. What would it take to successfully pull off such a stunt? And whom was I lashing out at to even consider doing something so hurtful?

Before I can decide for myself whether or not to continue with a new chapter in the EE world, I wanted to look back on what drew me into it in the first place. And that might take me some more time and another post to write out properly. In the meantime, I would love to know what others here might be thinking...

Eldritch Errors: The Providence Prophecies

BASED ON REAL EVENTS

I admit it. I am an EE whore. Even though GMD deserted us I still miss EE terribly. Here are the fruits of that conflict. Once I return from my 2 week trip over Spring Break it will continue.

This is not attempting to be 100% factual, mostly because that's impossible (and it makes a slow read). However if there are any major glaring errors (like I got someone's gender wrong o_O) please let me know and I will fix it.
As we wait for the next book, it's time once again to keep ourselves occupied so we don't go crazy.

With that in mind. I hereby announce the EE Diorama Contest.

Make it as simple or complex as you want. Anything from the shoebox dioramas you used to have to make in elementary school, or something insane .

The deadline is July 22nd, the date of the next eclipse (or... the next one visible to the naked eye by any of us earthlings).

Prizes TBD will be awarded.

Will also post an IG version of this announcement on the SO board.

[SUMMARY] Updates from Nov. 15 through Nov. 30

Consultant Bunker
Art Lyndley's site sends us to three deaddrop locations -each at an Indian Mound in the US. Each is also a location on the map that Helen Riley has on her site.

remember if you go to the fallout page you have to highlight the page to see the text, it is written in white letters.

Nov. 19 - update included to alan and d jpg which led to a location in North Carolina

Nov. 26 update included to jennifer and r jpg which led to a location in Indiana

Both of these locations, along with the location outside of Atlanta from earlier, led to dead drops. We don't yet know how the dead drop items got where they are or how Art knows where to send us.

The dead drops included:

1. To Kevin: a book called Tahara, Boy Mystic of India, inscribed to Elmer by Uncle Rathur; a blue bottle filled with sand; and, a flyer to a meeting called the Collective Consciousness Experiment. I think the sand is from a beach where Kevin's family held the memorial service, not sure if the sand was collected by Kevin as a child, or possibly by someone else. The book and the flyer are his too.

See Transtar's: who so wonderfully went to get this for us: photobucket

2. To Alan: a vinyl LP tribute to JFK broken into pieces, when re-assembled a sticky white hand is visible; a bottle with hair labeled JFK and a Page of Swords Tarot card ( I don't think Kevin's had a card if I'm wrong I'll change that one).

See j5's writeup on the Sentry Outpost wiki Thanks to J5 and "Cliff" for getting them for us.

3. To Jennifer: a Kenneth Cole reaction wallet with a checkbook register in it; a torn photo of a man in a tux with a white rose on the lapel and a head with evil written on it; and a tarot card of the tower

Thanks to Chixor for making a 3 hour drive (twice I think) to get this for us. Her flickr account has photos too.

Pope Tattles
Eddie Pope updated twice while I was away. I'm not sure of the exact dates.

Issue 4 explains that Kevin is dead and announces that he has found the Outpost. He subsequently joins the forums and posts there a couple of times. Issue 4 also shows that he has a copy of the Pope Tattles that Peter (from Forsythe Industries) gave Art Here showing that either someone sent him the link, Art gave it to him or he found his way to Art's sites hidden messages, just like we did.

Issue 5 tells us SHOCK!!! Bryce was released from the institution months ago, a year after he was put away... The idea is Bryce was released because of insurance reasons, we are skeptical. Eddie has an interview with the vaguely slimy and disreputable doctor that treated Bryce as well as a letter from Peter to Alan (Political Texan) mentioning an item that Peter (from Forsythe Security..remember) gave Alan. I suspect it was one of the JFK items in the dead drop cache found by j5 mentioned above.
He also has stuff about Bryce maybe being in North Carolina

Rileyssignals
I'm sure Dr. Riley has tons of interesting and important information, but I haven't listened to it so I can't summarize it. What I do know, she did a Thanksgiving update which helped Chixor find the deaddrop in Indiana.

All the updates on Riley's site are dated. There are helpful maps and pictures too, if you don't want to listen to the podcasts you should at least take a look.

We have an email for her now and she has been corresponding with players. She was there for the original scream and now feels guilty and wants to stop it.

Forsythe Security
No real updates but there is an event coming up in New York City in December. More information will be posted when available.

Nightmare confessions
More nightmares Most important one from Dee, a character, a dreamer who attended the West Virginia event last year, who says that BA is fine, but acting strange.

I think that's it.

This game is so much fun. I hope more people join us. You can play here at uf or at Sentry Outpost.

[SPEC] New character/storyline?

Ok - The Scion. New Outpost member, has only posted in the New York Appreciation Thread in General Chatter. I have this niggling suspicion that he is IG.

Rationale:
1. Named himself/herself The Scion. Which is a strange tag.
2. Mysterious user avatar, possibly a code of some kind?

3. Tells a story remarkably similar to 'The Shadow Over Innsmouth' here (I smell deeeeep ooooooones).

So, if this pans out, then we have a Mother Hydra/Dagon story to play through.

Email with Eddie Pope re: New York event

here is my email to eddie, sent late last night:

Eddie,

Were you in New York? We looked for you but didn't see you. Maybe you were eating pie instead of trudging around in the snow.

Just want to clarify that there is no way that Bryce was the" tarot killer". In fact, there probably is no tarot killer. Bryce was performing rituals trying to bring back his dead friends. He wasn't killing anyone. But someone murdered his dead friends in the first place, and we still don't know who or what killed them. Bryce was in the hospital when most of them died, so he couldn't have done the murders.

And, Bryce made a heroic choice to sacrifice himself to save the world from chaos. He was a sad, creepy and almost tragic figure, but he gave himself up to save everyone else. He deserves to be remembered for that brave act. Maybe you can write about him and what happened in New York.

rose.

Eddie to me, sent this afternoon:

>
Dear rose,
>
> It was my good fortune to find your email sitting in my Mailbag today. Was I in NYC? A Journalist like Eddie Pope isn't going to allow a little winter weather get in the way of the story of the century. A lot of hot coffee and pie. Happy to hear I wasn't spotted. You should know I am mister-master of diguise, rose. It is one of the many traits that make me one of hell of an investigative reporter.
>
> May I ask, why you were in New York with Bryce Droher? In fact, let me stop right there. It would be a coup to have an interview with you about your own perspective on everything that went down in the Big Snowy Apple.
>
> Why were you and your friends running around New York with nutty Bryce Droher and Art Lydney?
>
> And what was with the crazy symbols you held up at webcams? Some Sentry secret code? What gives?
>
> You say Bryce Droher sacrificed himself to save the world. What?! I have to agree with your accurate "sad and creepy" description of Bryce, but you will have to fill in some important details for me to understand how this weirdo performing made up rituals at Indian Mounds saved the world.
>
> And what can you tell me about your long ride on the the A train to 190th? Who's the short old bearded guy named Jacob? He sounded all Obi-Wan Kenobi. What is up with the apologies? What did he do to you?
>
> Do you have photographs or video of your little run around with Bryce and Art that you would allow me to share with my readers in an upcoming edition of the Tattles?
>
> As you can see, I have many questions and I am grateful for any answers that you might provide. With your help I just might be able to point the finger at the real killer!
>
>
> Yours,
> Eddie Pope

and me to eddie: fyi Eddie is a member of the in-game forum Sentry Outpost:

Dear Eddie,

I only participated in a bit of the trip around New York. If you want more information, there is a lot of stuff posted on the Sentry Outpost forum. You can find out who took part in the event by reading the forum.

I'm not sure you got my main point -there was no Tarot Killer.

Take care

rose
