Hello everyone - Friday, December 7, 2007 is the day that the World Without Oil simulation ended in game time. An auspicious day to update you all on what's happening with the game and with the global oil situation.

WWO LIVES
Today I'm launching a blog, "WWO Lives," at http://wwolives.wordpress.com - a place where people interested in the game and the oil dependency issue can help keep each other informed about what's going on. I've turned my web meanderings and post-game adventures with WWO into backdated blog posts, so don't be afraid to go back through the blog posts and comment on old entries. I'm not a great blogger, so if you can step up with your own ideas and observations, that would be helpful - you can email blog post ideas to me at wwo @ writerguy.com.

THE OIL SHOCK IN SLO-MO
In the months since the game ended, real-world events have struck me as eerily parallel to the game scenario, except in slo-mo. It's hard to believe that the price of a barrel of oil has risen 50% since the game ended, for example. Supply optimists contend that this price will lead to greater oil output which will bring prices down, but I dunno: "There is a lot of oil in these fields but none of it is easy to get to. I think it's to be expected that costs are going to continue to go up," said Barry James, chief equity strategist at James Investment Research, today after Chevron announced it was increasing capital spending 15% next year.

THE WWO ARCHIVE
Helped perhaps by real-world events, interest in the WWO game continues strong. Over 6000 people a month visit the site archive, and the blogosphere continues to discover the game and be intrigued by what you players created. Mark Bracewell and I are working on a facelift for the worldwithoutoil.org website, to make it easier for visitors to navigate the site and understand the game in retrospect, and our Kalwithoutoil videographer, Kiyash Monsef, is putting the finishing touches on a 6-min WWO video that pretty much rocks. Mark your calendars to come back to www.worldwithoutoil.org sometime after December 15 to see the expanded site and the video.

WWO FOR TEACHERS
I'm also working with a talented teacher to develop a WWO mini-game suitable for high school teachers to run in their classrooms. The timeframe isn't set in stone yet, but I expect the lesson plans will be posted on the WWO site by end of February 2008. We're planning to have standards support for lessons in world and American contemporary history, in government and economics, in sustainability, and in creative writing/journalism and multimedia.

It's subtle, but a change has happened in the world. I keotag "World Without Oil" now and then, and I'm finding a growing number of people are citing WWO as the web event that inspires them, or the model that validates their own game and simulation ideas for the public good, or is the core of their theses and so on. It's like a door has been opened, or we've handed a tool for good to a bunch of creative and good-hearted people. The credit for that really goes to you the players: it's your contributions to WWO and your faith in the game that are making this all happen. So thank you!

Uh, well... I was checking out the WWO site and up in the upper-left-hand corner, I see a red link titled 'Admin.' Curious, I click on it.

This window opens up:

Hm, a login form.

I tried my WWO username and password. Nope, didn't work.

Then, I went back to the WWO mainpage to do some more investigating, and the link had disappeared.

So this is probably as lame of a question as possible and no trouts please, but "what is World Without Oil?" Or maybe more specifically, can someone explain WWO as a 30-second elevator pitch aimed at someone who doesn't know what ARGs are?

I have an extremely vague impression of what WWO is from the Argnetcast and from chatting with a few people on IRC. Yesterday, I went to the website for the first time and browsed around, but completely failed to get a feel for what it's all about. The "Mystified? Start Here" link at the top and "What's going on here" link at the bottom were somewhat helpful, but not much. I'd like to get involved and I'd like to get my non-ARGer friends involved, but that's difficult to do when you don't even understand enough yourself to explain it to someone else. So people can submit blog posts/pictures/video about how they are saving fossil fuels, and there's some kind of competition by region, and possibly a story hidden in there somewhere? Each region has meters for chaos, misery, and economy that come into play somehow. I don't understand. Halp.

5/1/07 , OMG! I missed the launch date and it took me two hours to catch up! Anyways, there's a new section at the bottom that sorts all the new links on the site into categories. Also, added mPathy's YT. BTW, WWO site email addresses (not personal email addresses) are listed at the bottom with the WWO sites, not with their characters.

[META] Those of us living in major urban areas

I have to say that suggestions about moving of onto my own land so I can grow my own crops isn't at all appealing to me. If I wanted to live like that I would have stayed in Ohio not worked hard so I could move to New York. :)

I really believe that the best way to prepare for a crises is for people to move to places where it is easy to get mutual support, you can walk or bike anywhere you need to go, plentiful mass transit, and where there is a community.

Maybe this should go into a blog post to submit to them - but I don't have any really good answers about how to live in a city without oil. The peak oil movement seems to be all about "taking care of yourself" and "self-sufficiency" but it doesn't have much to say about "taking care of each other" and "interdependent living in a community." The worse thing that can happen in a crises is that people start fending for themselves with out caring about anyone else.

I don't have a live journal account, I guess I may need one so I can post comments. I also don't want to be a negative whiner on their blog. ;)

Edit: OK I created a live journal account, but now they have to friend me so I can make a comment. Here is what I was going to say:

I understand that some people may choose to live in rural isolation, or relative isolation, and "self-sufficiency" regarding growing their own food. That is great for them and I totally respect that choice. I'm just not one of those people.

Here is a great article from this month's Wired, which discusses how much easier it is to create energy efficiency in a more densely populated environment. They designed a system that is totally green and self-powered. Where does the energy come from? Burning rice husks.
