Thought about this today and decided to check to see if they posted the solution. I guess it's not going to happen. Took a peek at one of the videos again. Such a sad ending (no solution) to some of the best produced media I have ever seen. Cheers.

I'd love to know how those Aubrey clues played out.

The North 40 Woods are pretty large and I agree that just knowing that you were looking for a fir tree still would have made for a difficult hunt.

When we walked the N40, we noticed a number of unmarked side trails that dropped quickly into deep brush. If the fir tree was at the intersection of a main trail and one of these side trails and the side trail led to the treasure tree, then I do think that it would have been possible to brute force / randomly search the trails for a fir tree. Might have taken a day or two, but it would be feasible.

However, if there were lots of fir trees (I don't think that there were) and if the treasure was not to be found along one of the side paths, then this would have been a "needle in a haystack" search without solving more clues from Ep 7 & 8.

My guess is that ccl is right about Aubrey clues in Ep 8. The puppeteers wouldn't have wanted someone to be able get close enough by Ep 7 that they could find the treasure before episode 8. And if you could have found the fir tree after Ep 7, wouldn't you have searched the immediate vicinity for some sort of marker? Since there was a marker, that would have been enough. So there must be more to Ep 8. I wish I knew what it was

The Aubrey clues span episodes 7 & 8. I haven't seen a single person suggest that there were Aubrey clues in episode 8. They lead you from the black gates to the fir tree. Without figuring them out it's improbable that you would find it.

Ep 1.
Ship = Maddie Hayes, a character from Moonlighting played by Cybill Shepherd.
Window Sele - ELE instead of ILL -> ship equals Cybele Shepherd
Google Cybele Shepherd to find out about the mythical Cybele who turned her shepherd lover into a Fir Tree.
So the "ship" (when we get to Ep 8) is a fir tree.

A Pirate foot is about as long as a crayolee = 4 in. So when we get to Ep 8, its 250 * 4 in or about 80 regular feet from the fir tree.

Start in Central Park, Wallach Walk (near the statue of Samuel Morse), head SW.

We also learn that Black Tom clues should appear in the next episode.

Ep 2.
Continue heading SW. End at Columbus Circle Subway Station

Ep 3.
Get on the Subway, end at Atlantic Ave Station in Brooklyn with the Characters on different lines. Atlantic Ave Station is the station right after the Blue crosses to be above the yellow and orange lines.

I'm not quite sure about where Black Tom first gets on his subway line, but I don't think it matters.

Ep 4 [ move to after ep 6]

Ep 5.
Very confusing episode. It appears that all 4 travel on separate subway lines for awhile and then get off onto buses. I think Mulligan goes down to Coney Island and the Aquarium. The Capn hits the end of the line and goes back up to Neck rd.

The only clear path here is that the names used by the announcers take you from Ocean Ave to near the intersection of Ave U & Flatbush Ave (Henrickson Ave). (Leslie Sebastian Charles = Billy Ocean; Hal Vukovich = Lance Henrickson), other names match the intermediate streets (e.g., Winona -Ryder St).

The capn mentions the giant turtle in his interview. This is in the playground on the route along Ave U.

Ep. 6.
Starts on the beach with crabs talking in a British accent about vitamins. A block from Flatbush & Ave U is a Vitamin Shoppe. That seems to confirm Ep 5 end point.

If one uses the Announcer clue from Ep 5, then they don't go anywhere in Ep 6. The Capn proclaims that he thinks he is stupider on accounts of that video.

My guess is that the comic book was made early on in the process and that some edits were made to ep 5 later, but that it was too late to change the comic book (which was awesome). So there's a lot of redundancy between Ep 5 & 6.

The British Red Coats toward the end of the comic book do provide some info. The drawing shows two forts separated by water - the Verazano narrows. The Red Coat capt says that he won't let pirates leave any zone containing Britains finest fortifications. Odd phrasing that is trying hard to NOT say the words "area" and "fort". The old forts at Verazano Narrows are part of the Gateway National Recreation Area. GNRA is huge, with parts in several boroughs and NJ. This is clue, but not very specific.

Ep 4.
Black Tom's first appearance is Clue 40 and the text behind him says "North Section" Put this together to get North 40. But don't use this clue until the next episode.

Not sure what exactly to make of the text of Black Tom's reversed speech.

28 furlongs. Go 3.5 miles in a straight line. South, I think, is the only way to go 3.5 miles in a straight line. This takes you just over the Gil Hodges Bridge into Rockaway. But "Now you've gone too far." So retreat to the prior bus stop just on the other side of the bridge. This is the entrance to Floyd Bennett Field.

Ep. 7
FBF lies in the Gateway National Recreation Area
FBF is a ghost airport.
When Mulligan and Black Tom are below deck, Mulligan stops and says the ghost is right there. When he does this, behind him are several slats of wood patching the hole in the cabin caused by the french. The slats match the orientations of the runways at FBF when viewed from above (e.g., google maps). So this confirms FBF.

Black Tom's clue about North 40 gets played here - so go to the North 40 Woods, a bird-watching area and nature preserve within FBF.

Black Gates of Hell - apparently this refers to black chain link fence near the westernmost entrance to the North 40 woods. This comes before Black Tom says anything in this episode, so this bugs me. I would think that clues to specific locations within the N40 woods should come after getting us to the N40 woods. FBF is a huge place, bigger than central park, so you have to get to N40.

There may well be other clues in this episode that direct you inside the N40 woods.

Ep 8.
THere may be a lot I don't know where. But the basic idea is that somehow you have found the right section of the N40 woods and then you must look for a tall fir tree, which is very rare amongst the trees there. When you find the tree, you find the ship (as per Ep 1).

Then look up at the airplanes approaching JFK (flying birdys), look at their flight path (mostly north) and follow the opposite path (away from the nest), head south for 250 pirate feet (=80 regular feet).

Apparently a skull and crossbones marked a tree. Dig under the tree to did up the treasure.

Perhaps, since N40 is a birding area, there is an actual crow's nest that one sees on the way to finding the fir tree, but this is just speculation.

My partner and I got pretty close, walking some of the N40 woods on our first treasure trip to Brooklyn in spring 2011, but never saw the black gates or a crows nest. And never figured out that we were looking for a fir tree. We were very focused on finding a crows nest. Also, even though we had solved Black Tom's N40 clue, we didn't think to move it to the following episode, where it would have made a lot more sense. We also got unlucky in that the Kings County Fair was set up at FBF and the west entrance to N40 was blocked off and listed as "no entry permitted." We snuck a quick peek, but chickened out, perhaps 5 mins before we could have found the black gates. I think that if we had seen black gates in N40 woods, we would have eventually figured out the fir tree and found the treasure sometime in 2011. But it wasn't to be.

We still have plenty of unanswered questions and I'm sure that I've overlooked clues in all of the episodes, especially ep 5-7. But I feel pretty confident that this outline is pretty darn correct. I'd love it if other could fill in remaining details as the puppeteers aren't talking.

A) their clues didn't add up and the smarter folk would rip it apart or B) this was a pure hoax from the getgo.

I know for a fact that this was NOT a hoax. However, I think the clues probably didn't add up as well as they intended. That's probably why after 3 years nobody ever came close. (Close is not randomly looking in 5 parks one of which is Floyd Bennet Field.) People are going to cry foul on the solution no matter what though. It's also possible that the hurricane never broke the treasure hunt, and they dug it up just to be over with it.

They really should follow through with this because if they ever decide to try this again in the future, it'll help to show that it was real the first time and there was a solution. I think that most people were too skeptical to believe it the first time.

As seen on this board, the videos could be interpreted to have 100's if not thousands of clues leading in all different directions.

I wouldn't be surprised if the PM's don't have a list of clues and, as much as I would like to see a detailed full solve, don't expect to get that satisfaction.

I don't doubt that the treasure was buried, and I agree with their reasoning for digging it up themselves, but realistically I don't think anyone would have found it without some additional clues anyway.

I don't think so. I hope not. I'm trying to remain positive. My husband has been saying the same thing for a long time.

I just can't understand how you could make a written or verbal puzzle without first having written down the clues/path.

Well things are moving really slow and in some areas not at all. The south shores of Queens, Brooklyn, Nassau, & Suffolk County are still a mess. The Eastern side of Staten Island is still a mess. A whole neighborhood community there (SI) is being torn down. So that is quite a lot of people who now have to look for homes now.
Our national elected officals apparently don't care about NYers. They were and some still, are blocking any sort of aide to help these people.
Yet, New Yorkers pay far more into our Federal Taxes then those who live down south so, go figure that.
We still have a lot of homeless people who are being kicked out of hotels because FEMA money has run out.

We're New Yorkers we survived 9/11 and a million other crazy disaster type things and I'm sure we'll survive this.

I think it's time to start accepting that we will never know the solution.

I'm waiting also. Just want to know if what I had was right or not? I spent a lot of time on this as many of you on this board have. Probably more because I have never done anything like this and really had no clue how to do any of it. I've spent money traveling to and from the city. I live in LI. I've enjoyed myself and learned a lot. Just want to know if all the research I did mattered or not.
