Reverse-engineering the solution

So the Gold has been dug up and solutions to a few of the clues have been given , and as mentioned in the first ever blog post from the WLOG creators , more information about the clues will be posted soon.

Does anyone want to try to work out the intended solution before it is posted?

The New York Times blog post gives us "Cybele" as an intermediate step. I note that using Mulligan's "Sill: ILL, Sele: ELE" rule, we can conjecture that maybe Cybele was supposed to come from Cybill Shepherd, the actress who played Maddie Hayes in Moonlighting.

Since the Maddie Hayes appears in many of the videos, it's not clear where it should be inserted in the sequence of clues. One possibility is that when Crothers Parrot says "start from the ship", he means to start from their ship, which we are supposed to interpret through this chain of reasoning as the location of whatever Cybele stands for (something about a pine tree according to the above link). This seems rather convoluted to me, so I'd like to hear simpler theories.

And if you have any other ideas for how to obtain the correct solution, this is a good place to post them.

New York Is Devistated

All Of Long Island which includes parts of New York City are in bad shape due to Hurricane Sandy which occured Monday 10/29.
Downtown Manhattan is flooded. The subways are under water and pretty much the whole stock market area.
Staten Island has been hit extremely hard. Lots of flooding in many communities miles from the shore.
Queens and Brooklyn have all southern communities flooded. You might have heard that Breezy Point had a massive fire inwhich 110 homes were burnt to the ground.
In Nassau & Suffolk counties all of the beach front communities have been flooded.. Sand & water have been pushed in for miles in all communities within a 1/2 mile inland.
It is Thursday 11/1 and a lot of areas are still without power. I am thanking God that I have power now.

Schools are closed all week pretty much every where.

Communications by phone both land line and cell are impossible.

If you could donate to the American Red Cross we would thank you.

As you all kinow I am marching to a beat of a different drummer then any one on here. After taking pictures way back in April of the neighborhood that I believe the treasure is in, I finally started working on this puzzle after Labor Day. Taking this long break has given my brain the vacation it needed to find a clear path. Here is what I discovered. (And this will be all I am sharing):
* Captain & Crothers are on the same path.
* Mulligan is marching to his own drummer.
* You really do need to do those switching of letters.
* Episode 4 is extremely important and has several parts.
* I know what the crows nest is.
* I know what the ship is.
* I know what the potato reference is.
*

Anyway I think the puppet masters did an incredible job doing this puzzle. Their way with coding is amazing. Once you know what to look for it comes to you. All I will say is that even in this neighborhood what you have orginally thought was some sort of land mark is NOT, unless you follow the path in order of the clues given. Which is what I was not doing earlier. I am working on this slowly because I have a lot of people who need me right now. I still have quite more to do.

In May & June of 2011, we made 3 trips to Floyd Bennett Field with shovels, a wheelbarrow and a metal detector. We searched around the North 40 woods, near the model airplane field and the road that goes into the woods from there. I'm pretty sure we got within 100 yards.

After 3 failed visits, I reinterpreted Clue 4 and wound up elsewhere, obviously to no avail.

Who else searched Floyd Bennett Field? North Forty? When?

After I gave up on FBF because I couldn't find anything on the ground that clicked with Ep 8 (and not much in Ep 7), I came up with something "better."

OK, so I end Ep 5 at the corner of Ave U & Flatbush, due to Leslie Sebastian Charles & Hal Vukovich (great clue) and the Turtle & snake in the nearby playground. The British Crabs on the beach at the start of Ep 6 confirm the location (don't eat those vitamins) - there's a Vitamin Shoppe (weird british spelling) a block away.

At the end of Ep 6, the crew is united and underway. I took them to the nearest subway (Brooklyn College), which is Ave H and Flatbush. Note that the Lucky pirate lottery numbers run between 22 & 8. The 22nd letter of the alphabet is U and the 8th is H, so that seemed to confirm it.

Ep 4 clearly says go 28 furlongs (3.5 miles), which must be in a straight line, almost certain along Flatbush Ave. So if I head NNW (since SSW took me to FBF and I'd given up on that), you wind up at 7 Av & flatbush. On the way, you pass through Grand Army Plaza and note that Crothers tells you that you've gone too far. This fits the GA (General Anesthesia) and PLAZA (pirates leave any zone armed) ideas. But I don't turn around and go back. I just get on the B subway at 7th Ave.

In Ep 7, the captain states that he's seen a night like this before - that is, that he's been here before. Since the Captain took the B line through 7th Av & GA Plaza, this seems to fit. The number of the ghost knocks is 2 or 3 or 4, so take the subway to where the 2, 3 and 4 trains intersect with the B - Atlantic Ave.

Ep 8 opens with the captain emphasizing "TIMES" (I remember when TIMES was better. someTIMES you gotta do whatever it takes to get those TIMES back again). Part of The Atlantic Ave station comes up in Williamsburgh tower, one of the tallest CLOCK towers in the world.

I wind up going back along Flatbush Ave to GA Plaza, passing two dermatologists (I'm itchy with the fear). GA Plaza is a mega-armed (8 or 10) circle with a Civil War monument in the middle (You'll be CIVIL to the ghost of Crothers, ... even if ... spider legs for arms). There's also a bust of JFK that disappeared for a while (his face be falling off)

End game options:
A. Beer Volcano/Start from the ship - There's a fountain in the center of GA Plaza and there is a ship carved in the fountain. Planes head NE into LGA serve as the flying birdies. The berms around GA Plaza are 250 feet from the ship sculpture.

B. Beer Volcano=fountain. Then "give me a head start before you come to eat my brains and guts and soul." Head out of GA Plaza to the brooklyn library (brains) to Eastern Parkway. Near the first corner is a gym (guts) and a Soul food restaurant. Opposite that corner is the Mt Prospect Park, the highest (or 2nd highest pt in brooklyn), so climb up to the highest point of the ship (into the park) which is the flagpole. Then go 250 feet SW opposite the flying birdies heading to LGA. SW of the flagpole is a little strip of desserted land tucked between the library, the botanical gardens, the park and flatbush ave. When I checked it out, there was a little new age shrine set up with a hollow log (a piece of wood sticking out of my head). This seemed perfect. But no treasure. Also the wood shrine was much closer than 250 from the flagpole. It might have been 250 Crayolees, though.

These seemed to fit Ep 7 & 8 way better than FBF did. Oh well.

Prior to the end of the hunt, did anyone figure out that the ship was a fir tree?

In hindsight, I understand it, but it feels like a seriously obscure clue to me.

I'm also curious to know how many people concluded that we only needed to go 250 Captain's feet / Crayon lengths. This clue seems fair. I just missed it.

I think that the treasure has gone to a very worthy cause, well done to the pirates!

As the treasure was discovered close to the area that I was homing in on, I thought I might throw my own thoughts in, although I've found that things in hunts are never quite what they seem, and this could all be a wild coincidence!

I won't go into all of the details about what leads to this point, but on the cross (and flying bit of stone) on the comic book page there are numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. If you use those numbers to order the mysteriously disappearing exclamations of the pirates, and then apply the lottery numbers to them, it is possible to get the term MAMUTH P, which is a contraction of the latin name for a woolly mammoth. There is only one in NYC, at the Museum of Natural History.

From the museum, you simply add the numbers in Episode 4 to get 111 (furlongs) (*add* insult to injury - Crothers and Nelson's injuries). Tom gives the direction to head (South) when he hangs upside-down in the previous episode. Tom always gives clues to the next episode. If you travel 111 furlongs south from the museum, you hit Leif Ericsson Drive. Leif Ericsson was the first Norseman to visit North America, and there are lots of clues in episode 7 to Norse mythology and runes.

You are then not far away from the final location. As I said, could all be a coincidence, or course....

Hi All. Darkhuman here. I started playing WeLostOurGold a few months back,(because of that G4 post) and tried on my own without looking at Unfiction; I noticed around Episode 3 everyone went their own way, I wanted to try and see why everyone differed. So when I got past episode 3 and beyond, and it still made perfect sense, I figured I'd keep going. Loved the puzzle so much, I kept going until I had solved it!! My problem: I live in Florida. So I'm giving my information to you, my fellow UF Hunters. No not you mr.lurker :p

I doubt I'm going to NY anytime soon, so here's My full solution, with Clues and final location. Posting it here because I love UF. I hope whoever finds the money (because I do believe it's a correct solve) hooks me up with half and tutty. that's my damn bird!!! Good luck to all, & please, Please comment back regarding my solution. It's one long path that i follow, my map doesn't make a specific shape, no finger or boat, just a random path to glory. Clue 53 "in regards to Mulligan!!!"= Clue #8, mulligan's Clue of Clues.

Now the part I love, Mulligan's clue of Clues looks just like the sandbox!
this is a horrible drawing :)

I see the rock in the park as a Foot and there is a pole "sticking out of me head" that I believe the crayon in mulligan's drawing points to.
At first i thought the walking path of the park made captn's boot print, now i only see it as the rock.

I contacted G&B and got a response telling me that they will not confirm any location, that would be unfair to other players. They did say you don't have to Trespass (which knocks out anywhere around the park with grass), or have reservations about digging. (SANDBOX!!!)

If anyone goes, I don't think the park allows full size shovels but small garden trowels works. I know it's like 2-3 feet deep with sand at least, do not throw sand outside of the sandbox. and Always BE SAFE. Also, I looked it up, metal detectors are NOT allowed at that park making the dig all that much more fun! ARRRGG! I wanted to wait until talk like a pirate day, the episodes got to me a bit and I did talk like a pirate, for weeks. BUt alas I felt bad just sitting on this info, hopefully someone can find it before then!! GOOD LUCK TREASURE HUNTERS!!
