Joining in the puppeteering

Dont Care How. Dont Care Why. Even if I am just a simple pawn. I want to be one of the people there for an ARG, because I enjoy seeing how creative and intelligent some people are, under the bullshit of shitposting memes and trolling people online. I want to be apart of something that will show how one can tap into the intelligence of others.

How do I get better at puzzles?

Afternoon. I am very much into puzzles, particularly those found in Alternate Reality Games (ARG's) but I found that I can be absolutely horrible at them.

It isn't just a lack of knowledge regarding ciphers, codes and number sequences. It's how I approach puzzles. Anyone out there know how I can improve my general problem solving, puzzling, deduction and methodology?

Books, videos, sample ARG's, any resource would be much appreciated.

I'm in the same boat - long time lurker, first time poster! I guess reading over this tutorial is a good place to start.

Crescent's advice seems good too. The threads can come across as a little confusing, but that seems like part of the fun.

ok - first - if you are wanting to just join in an arg, go to the boards and have a lok at the ones which are at the top of the list - these ones are the more active args - have a read through and see if you can join in [look for the initial postings and how they were contacted - usually an email - send an email to the people running it in game - 'Hi, I heard you need some help...' is usually a good start.
OR, if you want chance of being given a fresh arg, look in meta help and put your name in the interaction thread - this way, people running the games [PMs - puppet-masters] can contact you directly - then keep an eye out in your email box[es] for any odd emails - check spam folders a little as well...
hope this helps
if you have any questions, post on boards - but check the help guidelines as well [top left of forums has a few links]

replying to checkmite: don't know of any - and I personally, when running an ARG, separate myself from all aspects of the game - including registering such - I hate when I miss an aspect and a player finds my 'real' name... means I've not done my job thoroughly - that being said, all players have, thus far, been respectful of that [even pming me or informing me of such]

Ethical question

(Old thread, I know)

What about the question of -players- essentially "doxing" PMs? In threads for a number of games I have noticed that some players seem to consider it a matter of course to search website records and dox any names they find, or try to run whois on IP addresses they suspect of being used by PMs or other game staff and dox any names they find on these. On a couple of occasions players have mentioned using these names to search for phone numbers, addresses, even information like professional or educational histories. In one game that I won't name, one player seemed to have set a trap to obtain the IP address of an NPC, did "whatever" on an IP address thus obtained, and posted what seemed to be the details of the owner's professional career in the thread, and afterwards it turned out the person whose IP address this was done to was just some lurker who happened to be following the thread and clicking on all the links.

Is anyone willing to try and justify this? Has there ever been a specific instance anyone can recall where actual pertinent IG information was found by looking up the personal data of the people who registered the game's websites, or that behind the IPs that NPCs might be using? Has some PM somewhere actually posted a cipher or something on his personal Facebook page or hidden a clue on his home answering machine? I do not know, but I am, how you say, skeptical. It seems to me as if taking these kinds of steps crosses a line; I don't think running an ARG (or in the above-mentioned case, merely following one!) should effectively make one's own personal information fair game.

I know this would seem a logical place to post this by the title of the subforum, but this is really not. This is a more a meta area to get help as a player of args with args, but not the args/puzzles themselves.

however, someone else posted this samething shortly after you did in the proper place. So I'm going to go ahead and lock this one. ~ Pixie
'm currently having trouble decoding a message. I have never seen a code like this before, leading me to believe there's something very obvious about it I'm overlooking or that it's perhaps two codes intertwined? I've been puzzling at it since yesterday with no real progress. Can you please help me to at least figure out the basic cipher I am working with?

The puzzle:

"Message was intercepted at -33.4955663, 150.151999 at 23:02 EDT"

END

The plain text is supposed to help in solving it. I'm not very good at things like this however. I've tried using the coordinates to find the location in google maps, checked around with that, used street view, researched the web for anything relating, all looking for a clue as to the cipher and the key. I'm flailing, missing something. Any tips or help are appreciated.

How to best join in?

Hello, I am new to ARG's with no experience and would like to know how to best join a going ARG. So far it all sounds interesting but whenever I look into the Trailheads I get the feeling that I can do nothing but watch as everyone else is solving the puzzle because I don't have any special software and am stuck in Germany without a car.

Maybe there is some sort of starting ARG, something simple just to get a feel for it.

I jump in with 2 feet first and then just hope everything else falls into place.

I think sometimes ( IMO) its best to be like that. Everything goes so fast in here sometimes ( esp with regards to the puzzles) solved in seconds some of them.

Also dont feel shy or worried that people will mock your opinion. I hate when people do that to other players. Everyone i feel that contributes makes a good point and normally valid. Nine times outta ten if i see someone mock someone elses opinion or a pms effort il jump in with my 2 feet defense motions. lol.

Dont forget to just have fun! Some of the games can be a good laugh. Others are very serious in tone.

Dont be afraid to speak out and most of all dont much take anything i say serious :P no but really im scottish and i think on a par with germany we come across as quite curt sometimes, well at least i know i do.

...
Some time ago (likely years) we have chanced upon a game on this very forum that perfectly fits what we are looking for.

It was a client installed right over your browser that would let you use the internet as a giant gameboard . Collecting goodies left by game devs on certain websites, setting traps for other players and displaying lots of comments and extra info that only other owners of the same client could see.

Does anyone still remember the name of this game and maybe could share a link as well?

This sounds like something I had installed for a short while. It let you earn points for surfing the web. I will track it down!

PMOG (Passively Multiplayer Online Game) is what I remember. Is this what you were looking for? (It's dead now) http://pmog.com/#PMOG
