*Now* we can start looking for ILoveBees2

Quote:

A landmark partnership announced between Academy Award-winning writer, director and producer Peter Jackson, Academy Award-winning screenwriter Fran Walsh, and Microsoft Game Studios will create two new interactive entertainment series exclusively for Xbox 360 and Xbox Live. The first series will be a collaborative effort with Bungie Studios to co-create the next great chapter in the "Halo" universe. The second series will be an entirely original property targeted at bringing new audiences into the captivating world of interactive entertainment. In addition, Microsoft Game Studios will partner with Jackson and Walsh to establish Wingnut Interactive, a studio dedicated to the creation of world-class interactive entertainment.

Key phrases here:

'interactive entertainment series'
'...an entirely original property targeted at bringin new audiences into the captivating world of interactive entertainment.'

And with Jackson on-board, we may be in for a pretty amazing experience.

EDIT:

Found some more info on this:

Quote:

The second project is an entirely original property from the team in New Zealand that will not only bring a whole new interactive story to life, but will also captivate new audiences that have yet to discover the power of interactive entertainment.

Quote:

"Microsoft has built an amazing living canvas with Xbox 360 and Xbox Live, which allows the storytellers of our time to express themselves in a new medium. They have fundamentally changed how people think about games," Jackson said. "My vision, together with Microsoft Game Studios, is to push the boundaries of game development and the future of interactive entertainment. From a movie-maker's point of view, it is clear to me that the Xbox 360 platform is the stage where storytellers can work their craft in the same way they do today with movies and books but taking it further with interactivity."

They're not just talking about games on the 360....

Where do you get that from? Everything I see is talking about the 360.

People, there's not going to be an ILB2. At least, not one made by the same people that did ILB, and would you want anyone else doing it?

There's not terrible much there to get excited about - we could simply end up seeing a Flash-Heavy Website With A Nifty Domain Name That Re-Routes Predictably to HaloMovie.Com, and contains Wonderfully Shiny and Slightly Usable Widgets That Go Ding! and there'll be like, some crazy-ass letter from the Covenant in that really hard to read font, etc.

As for certain ARG concepts never coming to fruition, I think it's a little bit difficult at this point to be absolutely sure, unless you're a Bungie-dude-in-the-know.

Bungie has, however, announced a partnership with Ensemble Studios to create a real-time strategy game (for the 360), and the trailer's pretty freakin' sweet. So I am betting that that's the partnership with Microsoft Games they're alluding to. MS owns Ensemble.

ETA: Hmm, yah, Halo Wars is one thing, but this interactive doohickey is indeed another.

from Bungie.net:
Quote:
This raises as many questions as it answers – will it be a sequel? A prequel? A side-story? We won't squeal, but we can tell you it will be a blend of gameplay and storytelling quite unlike anything the games industry has ever seen before.

Quote:
Peter Jackson himself kind of sums up our feelings about the venture, saying, ""Working directly with the Bungie guys to help carve out and reimagine another piece of the Halo game universe is a dream come true. Combining the creative and technical talents of Bungie Studios with the fire and passion of Wingnut Interactive just seems like a great recipe for success and the perfect way to start a new kind of partnership in the video game world. I can't wait."

It seems more like a video game that will incorporate the 360's online capabilities and graphics to create something more interactive than getting teabagged by a stoner during a CTF game on Lockout.

What I mean is they're not just talking about developing games for the 360. Interactive Entertainment. I Love Bees was for the game Halo, which was on the X-Box. But it (ILB) wasn't on the X-Box.....

And no, I'm not saying there's going to be a literal "ILB" sequel, I'm using that figuratively.

And sure, I'd love to see another ARG based in the Halo universe if Peter Jackson was involved doing it. Why not?

Nowadays, Interactive Entertainment is an industry buzzword used to describe flash presentations on websites, mini-games, viral marketing, and ARG elements.

Will it happen the way we're looking for it? <shrug> . But now we have some 'official' word that actual work on interactive entertainment is going to happen.

ARGs and Viral Marketing are not some pure genre with clearly defined roles and actions. They have every ability to evolve into something else as much as anything.

I'll be watching for stuff in the next several months / over the year, and I suggest others do the same.

Well, I'm not saying there won't be viral marketing for it -- I'd be surprised if there weren't. But I don't think that's what Jackson's talking about.

"They've fundamentally changed how people think about games [with the XBox 360]," he says, and then continues to say that he wants to push the boundaries of what they've already done. It sounds to me like he's talking about bringing a more cinematic aesthetic to games for the 360, which provides a platform (video games) where storytellers can "work their craft in the same way they do today with movies and books" but this platform allows them to "[take] it further with interactivity" because video games, unlike books or movies, are overtly interactive.

So while there may be viral marketing, I don't think this is meant to be read as a promise that Jackson's going to be involved with it. It sounds to me like he's talking about what he intends to do with video games.

Not that that won't be very cool -- I mean, the guy is an incredible genius -- but I don't think that's a hint that there is an ARG coming.

It reads to me like the "interactive entertainment" he's talking about is video games.

I'm agreeing with this --

-- specifically Xbox Live, in my opinion.

But please, let's hope there is no countdown website.

I would be displeased if they attempted an ARG for Halo 3. Two reasons why:

It wouldn't be as good. There's nothing they can do to make a successful sequel to an ARG. I feel it in my blood.

It couldn't be ILB2. Simply couldn't. The curtain has been torn down, thrown aside, walked on and possibly set on fire. And I wouldn't want something else, another piece of unfinishable Halo-related-but-not-in-Halo storyline.

Which brings me to my next point. I want a continuation of the ILB storyline. I don't care if they DC it and do some kind of "One Year Later" where Kamal is dead and Jan and Jersey are on the run for whatever reason and we have to learn it all through flashbacks. I don't care if they even appear in the game. I'll learn to live with novels, graphic novels, or even online media of some sort. I just. Want. To know. What. Happens. NEXT.

As to Peter Jackson's involvement, I thought we knew months upon months ago that he was slated to do the Halo movie. Did nobody else here hear about that?

But, please, no second Halo ARG, pretty please. One is good. One is the loneliest number, but it works best.

And you know what, I have to go back to my rant about continuing ILB. Give me more backstory, give me history. I want to hear all about J^2, and all the things that happened before ILB. Gimme gimme gimme, basically is what I'm saying here. I throw myself at the mercy of Santa, or the Tooth Fairy, or the Easter Bunny, or whomever I gotta kiss up to to get this thing to happen.

I agree with trident. I Love Bee's was a fantastic way to expand the halo universe and will probably stand alone for a long time, but having said this bungie are huge fans of tormenting their fans in bizarre and obscure ways and I do see them making another ARG. Put it this way, while the halo games are the main block of canon. The books, The Graphic Novel and I Love Bee's and even the unlockable spartan in DOA4 tie into the expanded universe well.

So it doesn't have to be and likely won't be I Love Bees 2, but yet another side story into the halo universe to lead into Halo 3. I also want to see more of the characters in ILB, I'm hoping atleast one makes a cameo in the new halo book. While the spartans are awesome, the ILB characters are just as good.

Also, don't dismiss peter jackson as the kind of person who wouldn't do an ARG because Jackson would do something out of left field in his game. The King Kong game is a classic example of this.

For the record, it's NOT Jackson doing the movie (although they ARE using Jackson's production studios in New Zealand). It's Neill Blomkamp. And he is awesome.

Alright, back to your regularly scheduled thread.

Um, Peter Jackson is the executive producer. So yes, he is very much "doing the movie." He's just not directing it.
