<macmonkey> o/
<Leyton> woohoo
<Highwind> Hey Mac
<macmonkey> hey guys
<RoseKitty> Hello
<Leyton> Hey dude
<macmonkey> How's everyone?
<macmonkey> it's really stormy here. :S
<Highwind> Good over here
<Highwind> Yeah, I'm getting some winds over here as well
<RoseKitty> Nice and sunny down in Texas
* macmonkey is jealous
<Leyton> Tell me about it Mac... Had to skip Uni yesterday because of the shitty weather
<Leyton> And Reading stn was covered in Animals today!
<macmonkey> Animals?
<Leyton> Yeah apparently they had "Animals on the line"
<Leyton> hahaha
<Highwind> Must have wanted some shelter I guess
<Leyton> Yeah well... I've got 3 papers due in this week >.< and a vid project to get done and if this weather persists we'll never finish ffs
<macmonkey> shall we wait until about 5 past? I guess there might be more people on their way?
<Highwind> Up to you, but I'd wait in case time zones mess anyone up
<Leyton> Yeah it's coming to around 5EST... 2PST right now so...
<macmonkey> time zones confuse me so much
<macmonkey> but lately I've been running on US time, so it hasn't really mattered
<Leyton> Well the U.S went fwd an hr like 2-3 weeks before we do which messes me up even more than usual
<Leyton> I'm used to saying EST is -5 behind us
<Leyton> But now it's only 4
<Highwind> I just hate time zones in general. I had a bookmark to help me, but I lost it :D
<RoseKitty> Daylight Savings just started this past Sunday
<macmonkey> who was it that mentioned to Gerry about daylight savings?
<Leyton> Yeah we don't start it til March 29/30
<macmonkey> that confused me soo much!
<Leyton> That wasn't me but "oops" lol
<macmonkey> I was panicing because I thought I had an hour less! haha
<RoseKitty> http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/
<Leyton> Well I've got 9:01pm here now... Which to me is 5:01EST, 4:01CT, 3:01MT and 2:01PST
<Highwind> Same here, except my clock's a minute off
<Leyton> I spent most my time when first exploring the net making friends all over the U.S - My gf hates that I do much the "American" way... Even spelling.
<Leyton> Which I assume Becca does too because she put "Favour" in the chat, then tried removing the u... 0_o
<Leyton> haha
<Leyton> < Will brb
<macmonkey> perhaps ;)
<Leyton> Unless she's an American with a totally cool Brit accent...
<Leyton> Now brb lol
<Highwind> I've posted on the thread, so hopefully anyone else not on will see it and at least try to get here
<macmonkey> cool
* fencer_ has joined #ophiuchus
<Highwind> If not, chances are they'll be able to catch the second one later
<macmonkey> well I've never done one of these, I guess you guys should just fire away and I'll try to answer what I can...Let me introduce myself properly first :)
<fencer_> Hello :)
<macmonkey> hi fencer
<Highwind> Use "/ns ghost password" fencer
<macmonkey> so...I'm Marc McGinley, a student of Multimedia Technology and Design at Brunel University, London
* fencer_ has quit IRC (Broken pipe)
<Highwind> Leyton's managed to tell us that much anyway, from some sort of OOG slip earlier. He waited until yesterday to say though
<macmonkey> Project Ophiuchus has been my dissertation project, which is basically a practical project..create something new and cool
<pancito> PO=succeed
<Highwind> Yup, so true
<macmonkey> yep, I managed to send an email to him from my personal account :P
<macmonkey> so basically I'm here to answer some of your questions, and to get some feedback for my write up
<macmonkey> positive or negative :)
* JinKs[away] has joined #ophiuchus
<Highwind> Well, I guess the first thing I want to know is, Jen and John. Were they part of the game, or someone messing about?
* JinKs[away] has left #ophiuchus
<Leyton> I will say in my defense I didn't say anything about that til last night and even then it wasn't detailed!
<Leyton> lol
<macmonkey> I really want to know who was playing Jen and John. They were totally not part of the game, but I found it funny
<Leyton> Hmmm gamejack then
<Leyton> attempt*
<macmonkey> perhaps. What were the emails that you guys received?
<macmonkey> They weren't part of the game either
<Leyton> Personally I don't recall emails... Just that they were in the 1in50 chat.
<Leyton> I thought?
<Highwind> Heh, I must admit it was funny when Fencer started spilling the email sent to her from Jen in front of her, due to that delay in the chat :D
<Highwind> Nah, Jen asked some people questions via the email as far as I know
<Leyton> Really? Hah... Must have missed that one >.>
<pancito> but JJseemed IG, except for when you came from behind curtain to say "Seriously, ignore that"
<macmonkey> Oh, I thought some of you received gamejack type emails aswell, before the interface went live
<Leyton> Perhaps Jen = a real life CERN opposer
<Leyton> lhc*
<Coffeebean> What about RebelM?
<Highwind> Heh, that would make that whole thing hilarious
<Leyton> I thinks we is laggin
<macmonkey> I guess they were playing within the rules to try to see what they could accomplish :)
<Highwind> RebelM was the guy who was in here for a while and said nothing, right?
<macmonkey> RebelM...no idea who that was....
<RoseKitty> Yes
* macmonkey whistles
<Leyton> LOL
<Leyton> tsk tsk Mac
<Coffeebean> lol
* macmonkey looks shifty
* Highwind facepalms
<pancito> ;)
* Leyton shakes fingers
<Leyton> Well one of them
<macmonkey> it's really frustrating that you didn't get the room logged. Spying is good for game improvement purposes :P
<Leyton> Well we did learn that typing for example Leyton Stone >Exited Chat
<Leyton> made ppl think we'd left
<Leyton> ;)
<macmonkey> sneaky
<Coffeebean> we were only figureing out auths for 5 and 6 that night, I think
<pancito> Moon has had it open from day 1 as far as I can tell
* ixalon has joined #ophiuchus
<macmonkey> hey ixalon o/
<Leyton> Yeah no doubt moon was watching that chat like a hawk!
<ixalon> evening :)
<pancito> nvr there
<Highwind> Which room are we talking about here? This one, or the 1in50 one?
<Coffeebean> moon is probably still logged on at 1in50
<Leyton> 1in50 I think
<Leyton> lol cb
<pancito> both as it turns out
<macmonkey> I checked earlier and she is :)
<Leyton> Ok I had a question... Mac. Was the file placing @ Brunel an already discussed thing? Or was it because I made references to it?
<Coffeebean> And how did u place one in Texas?
<Highwind> I'm sure that he does have friends CB
<Leyton> lol
<macmonkey> Leyton: It's a mixture of both. I was plotting to place the file somewhere in London, and wanted to do it close to home. I never expected someone to be playing from the same University, but since I knew that you were that was the final thing that made me do it
<macmonkey> The USB stick in Texas was placed by Lhall (from unfiction). She's a player I met through Perplex City
<Highwind> I kinda find it scary in it's own way
<Leyton> That's cool; I only ask because it seemed the choice of hideaway in TX was slightly obscure and it took us ages to find someone in that area. But yet the next one appears where [due to security reasons] I prob' woulda been the only one to get ahold of it.
<Coffeebean> security reasons ? in a Library?
<macmonkey> The security thing was the only reason holding me back from that location. I pretty much had to prey that you went to get it
<Leyton> It's a university Library... You're not allowed in without a University pass cb
<Coffeebean> o
<Highwind> Fair enough
<Highwind> Although there were 2 sticks, so there was a backup plan
<Leyton> lol as soon as I saw the 'riddle' on lmf I was like sweet but that was my bloody day off >.<
<macmonkey> also if you'd have found Jason's facebook profile you would have found that he's an ex Brunel student
<Leyton> Dangit
<Highwind> O.o Whoops...
<RoseKitty> I remember talking to Leyton over that
<Leyton> I searched for Jason... I thought if he and Becs were 'old school friends' he'd be on her list.
<Coffeebean> what other things did we not find?
<Leyton> Yeah I was kicking myself all day Rose
<macmonkey> There's a few little things. I can't remember anything major. Mainly references to things
<Highwind> Nothing too important?
<macmonkey> Did you see which chapter the USB stick was hidden in Leyton?
<Highwind> Lemme guess. 13?
<macmonkey> Nope, it was a book of kid's stories
<macmonkey> Alice in Wonderland I believe
<Highwind> lol :D
<Leyton> Yeah it was AiWL
<Leyton> Find me (drink me)
<Leyton> Did you purposely hide it on 2nd floor too, Mac? - Cos it's the only floor us film students visit haha
<macmonkey> and I was quite worried that you wouldn't find the USB stick in Texas, since it'd been there for over a week when you found it
<macmonkey> Leyton:Nope
<Leyton> Wow... Lucky then lol
<Highwind> Heh, we had bother finding a Texas person for a while
<Leyton> I sent a "contact" on the day of the clue to find the "PT" section and she couldn't find it. I walked in next day and was like "oh, it's there" haha
<Leyton> But the shelf # threw us off because we actually (as you prob know) researched it on the Brunel library and it gave us a different book... I was like dangit, it's probably not where I think it is then
<Leyton> library website*
<macmonkey> yeah
<Highwind> Nothing like actually being there
<macmonkey> I'm quite surprised about the Oxford link to the Dallas USB stick
<macmonkey> what a coincidence that Oxford and UCL are where martin and rebecca went
<Leyton> Yeah lol
<Leyton> Ok... In Bec's blog she refers to Jason as Jason/Dani... Are they / Were they one in the same? Or, did she mean Jason AND Dani?
<macmonkey> I must say a big thanks to the actors who played M & R actually. They did a great job. I wanted to film some more stuff, but didn't have enough time
<macmonkey> Jason == Dani
<macmonkey> ;)
<Leyton> I thought so
<Leyton> (After the blog thing)
<Highwind> I still haven't seen that clip with sound to this very day :d
<Highwind> And yeah, I thought so after the blog as well
<Leyton> So... Was punchline told to bugger off then? Or did he just bail on everyone? lol
<Highwind> yeah, good question. haven't seen him in ages
<macmonkey> There was going to be some fun stuff in that plot development. Unfortunately he wasn't around enough to be able to execute the plan
<Highwind> Oooh, what sort of fun stuff?
<macmonkey> I can't really say much on that. It might be nice to do what was planned in the future
<pancito> how many people involved overall?
<macmonkey> How did you guys feel about the fact that Martin and Rebecca were playing an ARG?
<macmonkey> pancito:Development team, or players?
<pancito> either/both
<pancito> mostly develop
<macmonkey> I think there were around 85 players, and 1 developer (me) :D
<macmonkey> it's so hard to keep up with you!
<Coffeebean> 85? from how many signed up at 1 in 50?
<Leyton> Ahh... So I was right?
<Leyton> They felt they were playing an ARG to begin with?
<pancito> d00d!
<Highwind> Is that including Natas1-9? ;P
<Coffeebean> ten of those were me
<Leyton> Or [were] playing one?
<macmonkey> there were about 250 registrations (including duplicates)
<Leyton> I said (again through reading the blog) It comes across as though @ the beginning M&R thought they were playing an ARG
<Highwind> 100 of those were probably Natas...
<Coffeebean> lol
<macmonkey> Leyton: yes, they did
<pancito> yeah, and all the hawaiian names were me
<Coffeebean> I didn't really care how they got in this mess, just wanted to figure out next thing to find/do
<macmonkey> did anyone think it was too much to mention ARGs in an ARG? did it break the suspension of disbelief thing?
<Highwind> I think it was suggested that they were playing a game, but I was too sleepy to think about it properly
<pancito> didn't leyton make that connection at one point?
<Highwind> Nah, ARG's in an ARG is nothing next to suspending your disbelief for other sorts of stuff
<Coffeebean> it was better than when you said "THIS IS NOT A GAME"
<Highwind> Yeah, that may have been just a teensy bit too obvious
<macmonkey> heh. Every game need some cliche
<macmonkey> :p
<Coffeebean> I think that alot of ARGs should post some sort of disclaimer, especially for missing persons, and death and such
<Highwind> Yeah, I think someone nearly put a poster up in a police station at one point
<Highwind> Now that would have been messy
<macmonkey> Yeah I agree. It's something that's not obvious until people start posting posters in Police stations
<Leyton> lol yeah I remember when Jason first asked us to do that, it was one of my main concerns
<Leyton> People assuming it was real and going to the media/police
<Coffeebean> maybe just on the source page: OOG comment, ARG
<Highwind> That would have been an early end to the project
<macmonkey> I tucked one away on the about page of the blog
<pancito> "put them up, take a pic, take them down" was the 'solve for that as I recall
<Highwind> yeah, we saw that Mac
<macmonkey> are there any elements of the game that you particularly enjoyed?
<Leyton> Yeah it was panicto... Mac... What was the thing w/ wanting me/us to leave voicemails on Becca's phone instead of txting?
<Leyton> I enjoyed the out of the house 'interactions' to be honest. - But, I was kinda hoping someone would chase me for the book when I collected it haha
<Highwind> I enjoyed the Intranet anyway. Once again, thanks for fixing the chat bug
<Coffeebean> enjoyed figuring out authorisations
<macmonkey> oh. I thought it'd be nice to have some real people voices to use in my write up :p
<Leyton> Ah sorry dude...
<Leyton> And here's me thinking Becca just wanted to hear my voice *blush*
<Leyton> I kid, I kid
<Highwind> Want us to phone you now? ;P
<Leyton> lol
<macmonkey> maybe she did :p
<macmonkey> she's married though ;)
<Leyton> That their real names?
<Leyton> Martin and Rebecca McDowell
<macmonkey> nope.
<Leyton> They Brunie students?
<pancito> were the actors other students you recruited?
<Leyton> (Here come all the big Qs)
<macmonkey> Daniel Carter-Hope and Caroline Boulton
<Coffeebean> how many txt messages from the USA did u get, and have you got the bill yet?
<Leyton> I've heard that name before (Caroline Boulton)
<Highwind> lol
<macmonkey> I'm going to link to their spotlight profiles when I get a credits page up
<pancito> cool
<macmonkey> she's presented a few TV shows Leyton
<Highwind> Cool
<Leyton> Ahhh... Damnit dude, that woulda suspended the belief had I figured out who she was lol
<Leyton> disbelief... w/e
<macmonkey> I got lots of texts from the USA and I'm not really going to bother reading the bill :D
<Coffeebean> lol
<Highwind> lol It's your own fault
<macmonkey> Could I just say how much fun the whole project has been.
<Leyton> So dude... Disseration... Thursday... Good luck w/ that bro. We've already had our little "meeting" and are being assigned our 'guides' or w/e this week.
<Leyton> ditto Mac, ditto
<macmonkey> You guys have had me sleepless for over a month, but it's been completely worth it
<Highwind> Yeah, same here Mac
<Highwind> Same here again. Lots of late nights on this end as well
<Coffeebean> I already an insomniac....works well for ARGs
<Leyton> Yeah man you almost made me miss the deadline for my European Cinema essay haha... jk
<macmonkey> oops :S
<pancito> I missed a class yesterday...and I teach it.
<Highwind> I may as well be an insomniac. I spent most of last night on the internet, then reading in bed
<Leyton> So here's a tricky question for you, Mac... Hub or Locos?
<Leyton> (Little inside thing there)
<macmonkey> oh, you might want to reread the status messages from last night. Not sure if you missed some vital info
<macmonkey> Hub :p
<Leyton> Haha definitely
<Leyton> "Copied files to backup server. Respawning in 269 days.Hibernating. Resetting with new participants: Total = 85 participants"???
<Coffeebean> the respawning message?
<Coffeebean> we have already seen that
<Highwind> You neab the stuff in the source?
<macmonkey> not that one
<macmonkey> ;)
<Leyton> Oh.....
<macmonkey> also, there were multiple outcomes to the game depending on how you played yesterday
<Highwind> The "<List too long for display> Total = 85 participants <List Truncated>"
<macmonkey> not that one either ;)
<Leyton> Nothing in the source...
<macmonkey> perhaps you didn't log it...
<macmonkey> ah well ;)
<Highwind> When the list of names were up?
<macmonkey> before that
<Leyton> No no not ah well... Tell us please! /me begs
* Leyton begs again so it shows up right
<macmonkey> around 9.50pm ish
<macmonkey> I don't have the exact message to hand
<Leyton> Hmm I only remember Error... And Suspected DDoS attack and the one w/ all our names on it.
<Coffeebean> ten minutes left?
<macmonkey> something about a participant being intercepted at LHR
<Leyton> Ok well I'm staying away from Lower Heath Road then.
<Leyton> ;)
<Coffeebean> I didnt see that one
<Highwind> London heathrow Airport? Martin?
<Leyton> Damnit I knew LHR meant London Heathrow
<macmonkey> haha
<Leyton> Omg... Dagnabbit... Those SOBs have Martin! :'(
<Leyton> Wait...
* Leyton /endgame
<Highwind> Yeah, that brings up the big question: Will you be making a follow-up?
<Leyton> Uh dude...
<Leyton> I'm a participant whatchu think?
<Leyton> lol
<Coffeebean> it didnt say resetting with OLD participants....
<macmonkey> Watch this space :)
<macmonkey> ->    <- that one
<Highwind> Heh, that's all I wanted to hear. Although I'd probably need a poke if there is
<Coffeebean> would you like more help with the next one?
<Highwind> I also enedup copying and pasting that space to see if there was a secret code. I'm getting obsessed :P
<macmonkey> any things you wish couldve been better? (taking into account there was only 1 person working on the project)?
<Highwind> ended up*
<pancito> I'm in. how much did all this cost you?
<macmonkey> pancito: around £100
<Highwind> Plus your phone bill equals...far too much
<macmonkey> mainly web hosting costs and domain name charges
<macmonkey> it's probably not too bad :)
<Leyton> Being as the fact that... You were the only person working on it, along w/ just a cpl actors. I'd say you did damn well Mac. - I mean I'll admit there were times where a few of us (I included) were getting a little frustrated @ waiting around lol. But, I think that all makes sense now knowing it was just you and you alone working on it.
<Leyton> Gotta have some outside life to yourself
<macmonkey> Coffeebean: I think if there is a sequel it'll be much larger, with help from more people
<Highwind> Good to hear Mac, good to hear
<pancito> Figured. not bad. well within doable for a small group or individual.
<Coffeebean> I am sure there are alot of "recruits" here that could help you
<macmonkey> hehe
<Coffeebean> and you probably have all our emails
<macmonkey> I'll bear that in mind nearer the time
<Leyton> TBH... I never followed right from the get-go of P.O... I found the project through lmf but was caught up pretty quickly and sucked right in so on that front you did yourself well man
<Highwind> Yeah. Maybe Punchline if he stuck around too
<pancito> really involved and involving. How much was mapped before you started
<Highwind> Yeah, i was in from the start, and I didn't even suspect LMF until the site updated. They tied together well then
<Coffeebean> oh, I would have to say that was my least favorite part, (at first) when the two ARGs became one......
<macmonkey> pretty much the whole plot was decided, the video was shot back in December and the websites were in development in late Jan
<Coffeebean> then it was really cool
<macmonkey> actually one of the unplanned things was the dual trailheads
<Leyton> So can I just ask; was there a bigger point to the video clip? (End of Phase 12)? Or, was that just to link 1in50 w/ M&R?
<Coffeebean> it was supposed to start off as one?
<Highwind> What spurred that then? Wanetd some more interest?
<macmonkey> Ophiuchus was always supposed to come in much later, after locate my friends
<macmonkey> I set it up as a tool to promote the start of the game (with the countdown)
<macmonkey> but you guys just wanted more and more
<Leyton> Oph was s'posed to come *after* lmf? It seemed it went completely the other way around lol
<Highwind> Hehehehe....
<macmonkey> so lots of the story had to be rewritten to fit
<Leyton> Yeah demanding lot over @ uF we are
<Highwind> We flew through most of the daily puzzles quickly enough
<macmonkey> the video clip was just to add realism to the kidnapping (and to make you think they'd been kidnapped)
* Fencer has quit IRC (Ping timeout)
<macmonkey> we have a nice green screen at University :)
<Leyton> We do? Wtf do we find it?
<Leyton> I mean I find it lol
<pancito> I had that thing apart frame by frame
<Leyton> I might be able to use that for our vid practice project... Being as the weather's like it is and we need to shoot some outside shots.
<Coffeebean> lol pancito
<macmonkey> I'm not sure Leyton, it belongs to the school of Design
<Leyton> Ahh... Ok I'll ask about it. This weather's put us right behind
<Highwind> No harm in asking anyway
<macmonkey> Leyton:I'll pm you afterwards with some details
<Leyton> Alright awesome
<Leyton> I had other questions damnit... And they're all gone now we're actually sittin here.
<Highwind> Here's a question: Was Sergay Poponov (sp?) and Kral supposed to be a big part?
<Coffeebean> mac, do you play ARGs too? before making this one?
<macmonkey> heh. I'll be back later if there's any more...
<macmonkey> Coffeebean: Yes, I've played a few. Perplex City was my main one
<Coffeebean> so we will be seeing you at unfiction still?
<macmonkey> Highwind: I think that plotline belongs to a different game :P
<Highwind> Good to know
<macmonkey> Coffeebean: Yes!
<Coffeebean> cool
<Coffeebean> as macmonkey?
<macmonkey> yep
<Highwind> Nope, it was this one. Unless it was a gamejack. Did you send an email with a soundclip during the game?
<macmonkey> Highwind: Nope, nothing like that.
<Leyton> High
<Leyton> I think he means... Nvm lol
<macmonkey> Highwind: Is your nick a final fantasy reference ?
<Highwind> Ah, I think I see now :P
<Highwind> And yes, it is. Big FF an here
<Highwind> fan*
<macmonkey> snap
<macmonkey> any more before I shoot off? Need to do some more typing before I come back again
<pancito> Thanks for a great intro to ARGS
<Coffeebean> thanks alot. cya.
<Leyton> Gimme a holler if you're ever around campus again Mac [although you're finished your degree now] maybe we can go over some ideas for another project
<Leyton> And gl w/ your dissertation and such
<Highwind> Thanks for my first completed game Mac. Good luck with Thursday
<macmonkey> Thanks for playing! you've all made this such a fun project
* Coffeebean has quit IRC (Quit: http://unfiction.com/chat/)
<pancito> no, you
<Highwind> So have you :D
* Leyton echos all thoughts
<Highwind> I'll see if there's anything else we can ask later by going through the wiki
<macmonkey> cool
<pancito> i'll miss that one. :(
<macmonkey> I'll be off for now then
<Leyton> tc mate
<macmonkey> take care guys o/
<Highwind> I'll see you later!
<macmonkey> feel free to email me on Jason's email addy if you've got anything to discuss :)
<macmonkey> Leyton: You have a pm :p
<Leyton> I'll check it mate, thanks!
* macmonkey has left #ophiuchus
