Um... I'll leave that one alone.
_____________

Major Comm Officer Angelo reporting:

After a total of 24+ hours on the road I have come to the conclusion, that every second I spent in Chicago was definitely worth it.

So, Disciple and I are finally getting into Chicago after our short trip and it was getting frighteningly close to 7:30ish. We were *politely* weaving in and out of traffic in a desperate attempt to not miss out on what ever it was we had decided to drive so far to attend. Every 5 minutes I'm calling Hyacinthe to find out what's going on... I'm sure she's wondering about my sanity now. Wink

We arrive a bit before 7:30 and sprint through the parking garage, across the street, and into the line where who nows how many people wait before us. Being there made me feel better, but I was silently pondering every event that could keep us from getting in ( I was extremely worried that the theater would be full, and I would be on the wrong side of the cut off point...).

Once the line started to weave back and forth between the seperators I noticed a couple guys wearing shirts with bees on them. I couldn't tell you what they looked like, but I do remember the phrase underneath the image. Bee-ooch...

Robogriff and Clayfoot were the proud shirt wearers we would come to find out, and man they are both awesome guys.

Finally we made it in, and met up with the rowdy bunch of beekeepers that controlled the upper levels of the theater seats. By far my favorite part of the whole event was meeting each and every one of the beekeepers I had the honor of spending my thursday night with.

Shortly after the festivities started I was called up for coordination duty... (no, no one asked me to take over the coordination of the Halo 2 multiplayer gaming aspects of the event... even though some may of thought I should of) I can only imagine what buzzkill's expression was when I told him we needed to coordinate the collection of phrases from each of the 4 locations, and apparently solve some kind of puzzle. I can't begin to express how much fun I had sitting in the middle of a plethora of beekeepers as everyone worked together to piece together our latest challenge. I can't say thank you enough for allowing me to coordinate that one last time in Chicago. I've still got the piece of paper where I rapidly scribbled down potential answers, and I plan on framing it and hanging it in my hall way to remind me of the fun I had with each of you.

After our gaming and puzzle solving fun we all went out to Denny's. Denny's was probably my favorite part of the whole trip, and where it up to me, I would of spent the whole time just talking with my fellow keepers. Especially the Goddesses... no, wait... I mean, I really enjoyed being around the beautiful ladies... no, no that's not what I wanted to say... um.. well. You get the idea.

It was an incredible honor to meet each of you, and I look forward to the day that we may have the opprotunity to cross paths again. Until then, I'll definitely see you around unfiction.

The Austin Event

First the bad stuff, then the good stuff.

Bad: The two Emcees for the Austin event were a bit fuzzy on what we were there for, as was the staff. When I first got there and asked about I love bees, the attendant said I must be looking for some other theater. Then I had a "shaking, waking" moment and said, "er....Halo 2 Preview Event?" and suddenly he understood what I meant.

The emcees actually made fun of ILBers for leaving after they'd gotten the DVD, which I thought was in kind of bad taste. I understand, Microsoft, that you want us to play Halo 2 more than you want us to obsess about your wonderful ad campaign, but some people were there just for ILB and I think you need to be a little gracious to them. I'm not sure whether the Emcees were from Microsoft or the Alamo Draft House where the event was hosted, so they may not have understood just what was going on, but it kind of rubbed me the wrong way.

Good: Getting to meet all of you was a blast. I ran into a bunch of guys from Dallas, who justly berated me for never coming back to my home axon.Embarassed We made jokes about the site and no one looked at us like we were crazy. Hearing someone on Live repeat the "I love bees" chant while the game was playing was creepy and thrilling. And although I didn't play, Halo 2 as a spectator sport was pretty awesome.

The next day, I played the axon plot on my stereo while trying to shake off wierd dreams of Melissa driving my car. I'd say that's about the right reaction.

Re: Halo 2 v. ILB

Checksum wrote:
2) The lanyards given out specifically say "I Love Bees". The word "Halo" does not appear anywhere on the Lanyard.

To be fair, they do have the "Halo 2" logo on them, front and back.

My $0.02: Of course they wanted Halo fans there. Even pure Halo fans who have never heard of ILB, could not possibly care less about ILB, and would gleefully snap the ILB DVD in half due to its lack-of-Haloey-goodness. Why? Because the underlying purpose of this ARG -- at least, from the point of view of those who funded it, and whom we must respect if we wish them to continue to fund things like this *cough* -- is to advertise Halo 2. Period.

Of course the PMs have a special place in their hearts for us. Melissa gave her "most loyal cremembers" a three-day head start on making reservations for the training events -- and even used GPS coordinates, to further reduce the chances of random people taking spots away from us. But there were plenty of spots left over, and nothing would be worse from a marketing standpoint than a half-empty auditorium. So Melissa threw the training events open to friends and family, and then sent us e-mail encouraging us to spread the word.

I think the intent has been clear all along. The Sleeping Princess even cautioned us: "I have a sneaking suspicion that when word gets out, there will be a whole lot of people who want to come that don't know a thing about bees..." The fact that we found their behavior...umm..."disappointing," shall we say?...doesn't negate the fact that they were meant to be there. They were wanted, too. (It does explain, howeer, why I spent approximately 85% of the time between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. out in the lobby, chatting and puzzle-solving, instead of watching or playing Halo 2. Hmm. I wonder if I would've won that raffle if I'd been paying attention? I'll assume not -- it'll help me sleep better at night.)

Which reminds me:

Missing entire day of work on Thursday: $<embarassingly low figure which I would prefer to keep private thankyouverymuch>
Gas: $16.83
Random crappy gas-station-type snack to keep up blood sugar on six-hour drive: $2.99
More gas: $24.90
Bay Bridge toll: $3.00
Parking for Sony Metreon: $16.00
Overpriced burger and fries at Mel's Diner: $20.00 (tip included)
Still more gas: $27.39
Bottle of something -- anything, really -- with caffeine for six-hour drive back in wee small hours of morning, so as to be back at work in Glendale by 7:30 a.m. Friday: $0.69
Meeting and chatting at length with four of the most incredible people on the face of the planet -- Elan Lee, Sean Stewart, Jane McGonigal, and Kristen Rutherford a.k.a. Durga -- not to mention lots of BeeKeepers: absolutely Censored-ing priceless.

There is not enough gratitude in the universe.

In defense of the PMs

Phaedra wrote:
I'm going to get my criticisms out of the way first, so I can end on the happy note that the evening represented for me.

First, we in the Midwest get no love. Are you reading this, PMs? The Microsoft rep suggested that you do read the forums, so I just want to say that I'm disappointed that you could send representatives (of the PMs, not Microsoft) to NYC, San Francisco, and from what I gather, Dallas, but not here.

Chuck, the Microsoft man, said that the Chicago event had the largest turnout. We had the most active training event thread. We have been just as active and faithful as anyone else. So why were we left out? Was it really logistically impossible to send a PM to Chicago?
*snip rest of post*

These events were sponsored by Microsoft and Bungie. Microsoft and Bungie did not pay for the PMs to attend any event. They came to San Francisco of their own accord, on their own nickel, because they wanted to attend an event and San Francisco was the closest one for all of them.

I am sure any of them would have gone to any of the other cities if those cities were closer to them. We were lucky. Please do not feel that you get no love. From my own post earlier in this thread, I say:

Quote:
I wish everyone in Austin, Chicago, and New York could have physically been in San Francisco last night. Your names came up in stories we were all telling, so you were there in spirit.

And when I say stories we were all telling, I am including the PMs who mentioned several people they wished they could have met.

They also said they would try to do some sort of IRC Chat fairly soon. I hope that comes to fruition so that you can ask them all your questions and see for yourself how generous and wonderful they are.

EDIT: Apparently it is happening: Ilovebees moderated PM Chat in #apocalypso, Sunday, November 7, 2:00pm PST

Darn the bad timing

Someone please log the IRC chat. That is during my flight home from Chicago. I am going to hate to miss it, but it will not be as bad if I can see it delayed.

A Halo fan, being at the excercise, is 'involved' with ILB. Those people are involved only to get Halo 2 stuff, but it is involvment nonetheless.

<sigh> If I go to hear the verdict of a court case, having never set foot in the court room until then, I am by no stretch of the imagination, "involved."

But you know what, having read the rest of your post, I think I'm going to cease trying to deal with you as if you were a well-intentioned person.

Ah well, this pretty much sums it up:

Phaedra wrote:

I don't care about your gender one way or another. I assumed you're an ARGer because you're complaining about how some people - who didnt care much about ILB - overshadowed you and the way you played ILB.

From the bottom of my heart, oy vey.

How precisely does one "overshadow" anyone in this game? It's a collaborative effort. I'm not going to go into what it says about your mindset that the first thing that springs to your mind here is "overshadowing." ILB was not a competition, boychik. The only way to overshadow anyone at the event was to beat them playing Halo, which most of us didn't even get a chance to do.

More importantly, it's impossible to "overshadow" something that gives off its own light. And if you haven't noticed that most of the people around here do that, I truly, truly pity you.

Wait a minute...I get it now. You're so funny, Scumbag! This is 5 Minute ILB II!

Poor widdle Scumsy-wumsy, don't worry: everyone is pretty, even you.

And I've got some stroking for that desperately competitive little ego: you've managed to accomplish something that no one else here even came close to doing!

You've made my ignore list.

Classic!! Thanks for the chuckle!

It was awesome meeting you and the rest of the Goddess Squad (who were as beautiful in personality as they were in appearance), and the 50 or so other beekeepers there. Just getting a chance to meet most of you guys in real life was well worth the 12 hour drive, with or without getting to play Halo 2. Sitting in a crowded theater watching someone cut down the entire opposing team with a plasma sword and cheering like he had just thrown the game winning pass in the super bowl was an experience to remember, too! I wish I could've gotten to talk to you guys a little bit more, but I've never been much of a conversationalist anyway (computers are much easier to communicate with Smile)

Clayfoot and Robogriff, I'm really glad you guys got to hang out with Angelo and I afterwards. Staying up until 3:30 AM playing Halo at the cyber cafe pretty much capped off the night perfectly. If you guys ever want to rematch on Xbox live, just send me the invite and I'll be there (gamertag's the same as my screen name). The invitation's open to any other beekeepers out there, too. I'd love to see some all beekeeper games in the future.

It's been a blast. I hope to see some of you guys in the next ARG.

-Disciple

P.S. Major kudos to the person who sent me the XBL friend invite with building-a-voice.wav playing in the voice message. Very nice!

You'd think she could have done it with facts instead of simply ad-homming someone who has been proved right in this very thread.

I was willing to let it drop, but P here had to go into a tizzy after those linked posts I made basically either made my point for me, or said it better than I ever could - that while ILB players were welcomed, this was a Halo 2 event, first and foremost. ILB was merely the vessel.

You'd think that after a few of these, you'd get the pattern. You guys think something, I disagree, giant argument slash flamewar, hurt feelings all around, what I said happens*, repeat.

Late Edit: I'm willing to again let it drop, if you guys will too.

* Not every time, but you get the idea. For example, I said "I believe that the 4th is not an ILB-specific event...Bungie knows people want to play Halo 2, and thats why they are comming" And I think its clear that ILB is merely one aspect of the "Play Halo 2 before its released without leaking it" UberProgram.
