It could be...but...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The big plant thing (Gravemind) is an organic being. It couldn't have prevented Dur...I mean Cortana from accessing the Covenant network. Remember in the cut scene where it held the Arbiter, the Master Chief, and the AI Construct at the same time? Well, Cortana was with the Master Chief the whole time that plant thing was talking to them both. So she couldn't have acted so surprised about the network resistance if indeed it was the plant thing because they've had exposure to each other prior to them "warping" to the Covenant ship.

Oh...and also..
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The comment I made about it being the Pious Flea was not to be taken seriously, but it seems as if the Covenant have their own version of an AI security system. It is possible that they have learned about the abilities of Cortana and made a program to prevent her and others like her from interfering with their network.

The ark is the ship that MC is in at the end of Halo2. I think guilty spark's comments cement this.

What comments in particular lead you to this conclusion? The phrase by the prophet and by GS 343 that the "Ark is the key" is what I based my spec, about the artifact at ONI being the "Ark", on...

By that I mean the ark is reffered to as a key or something that is designed to activate other things - to make them or their capabilities accessable. I guess I am failing to see where the ship plays into this idea as being the ark... hence the request for clarification

Gravemind could be...

Well, everything can be seen in another light. Here's some spoilerish stuff to taunt those people who still haven't played the game and care about spoilers.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Well, Gravemind was able to break into the Halo systems. It had control over the teleportation devices of Halo.

Cortana would have no reason to expect Gravemind in the High Charity systems, because as far as she knew, Gravemind was still on Halo.

Also, I don't think Gravemind would've tried to infiltrate Cortana because it/he was trying to get on the Arbiter's and Master Chief's good side. The Gravemind, if it was related to Flood, could probably infected both. But considering the way the hosts turn out, it seems like Gravemind wanted those two....intact.

I have no idea as to what the presence in the Covenant systems could be. It could be Gravemind, it could be a Forerunner AI, it could be a Covenant reversed engineered version of Cortana.

Plus, Cortana may've been lying.

The relationship between Gravemind and Cortana, while hardly chummy, would suggest some sort of relationship. What was Cortana doing when Master Chief was unconsious?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Well, Cortana does seem to put it all together near the end. What with her whole "OMG GRAVEMIND TRICKED US WTF HE IS ON INAMBERCLAD"

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Right. Seems as if this Gravemind has other objectives in mind. When it said "I am the culmination of all your sins," was he referring to the flood or something else?
[OT] I don't know if anybody has really investigated where the flood came from aside from being a parasite to all living beings, including Forerunners.
[SPEC] Seems to me like the Flood are a Forerunner experiment gone awry.
Lastly, Cortana...trust her or not? From what we've learned in ILB, AI's are immensely powerful but have limitations in their programming. For example, Durga/Melissa could not help Jersey's dad out or Jan's "fake age" not because she is not capable of manipulating the numbers but rather because she has a limit to her. Cortana could have easily blown up the Covie ship but instead stayed with Gravemind to "chat it up." What's the deal?
Durga/Melissa also seem to have objectives in mind that arn't fully revealed until later on because they seem to be on a "don't ask don't tell" policy. What exactly is Cortana's purpose? To help mankind? To destroy HALO? Or is it something else entirely that hasn't been revealed yet? Why didn't she fire the MAC cannons on the orbiting space station?
[SPEC] How many years has it been that Cortana is active? Is she going "rampant" just as how Durga/Melissa did?

Boy oh boy...that's a lot of words.... Shocked

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Your speculation on the origins of the Flood is quite intriguing. I'm going to look into that the next time I have a chance to sit down and play the game.
However, I think you're off-base about Melissa. If I'm not mistaken, Jersey's dad is the Castaway from the first Halo, but didn't he die out in space? Or was he picked up? If he died, Durga couldn't bring him back, because ... well, you know. I've not played Halo, so I can't really say one way or another.
However, I do know that Durga was trying to protect Jan by not mucking about with her records. Durga didn't want Jan to sign up for the military; she was trying to 'take care of her crew.'
I think Cortana's purpose is to find out as much as she can about the Covenant while keeping her crew out of danger. Make your decisions accordingly.

For everyone looking for the origins of the Flood, read the book "The Vang" by Christopher Rowley (amazon.com), that was published in 1988.

The legendary ending says...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Coming Febuary 9th 2005

Or something like that. It was all over the TXB boards.

Alright, I have some of my own spec...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
When I saw Cortana after the credits, I felt there was something different about her. Then it hit me, what if ILB was introducing us to very simple processes 'turning' very complex AI's?

Also, I believe that the Covenant had picked up the EMP blast from the artifact and came to Earth looking for it. However, this doesn't really explain how the Covenant were confused we were here, maybe they know something about Earth, something important, that we do not? When we see the MC returning to Earth, the covenant aren't glassing it quite obviously, they're landing ON it. I really do believe they got the artifact when they first landed and then ran for it, why not just glass Earth and be done with it?

Now about the Ark. 343 says the artifact is ON the Ark, not in/about/etc. This makes me believe the Ark is a place, not an item. So the "Ark Of The Covenant" could be incorrect, at least, in my opinion.

Finally, the Gravemind. He's freaky and all, don't get me wrong, but there is still something just not quite right about him. Something different. Especially what/when he talks about what the Forerunner built the Halo's for, there is multiple voices there. People have mentioned before that he could be the Flood "Hive Mind", but I do think there is something ELSE there.

Two things. First with respect to ILB tie-ins:

The gist I got from the PMs in SF was that the story was pretty much 100% theirs. They had the Halo Bible to work from, but even elements as significant as the artifact itself were their own creations (though the fact that it is a forerunner artifact is owed to a suggestion from Bungie). Thus I find it highly unlikely that the artifact has any tie-in to the greater Halo story arc.

Now, as for the ark:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I haven't played through the game so I haven't heard the exact language, but does it explicitly say that this thing sets off all Halos remotely and simultaneously? If not, couldn't the "ark" be the human race?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The GraveMind is a flood, one giant flood beast. Composed of bodies of the dead. Also to add in to why the GraveMind is the flood. The Arbiter calls it a parasite. But ya, the Flood are known to repair ships and weapons and affectively use vehicles. So i think the GraveMind can board and use the Amber to move from place to place.
