[SOLVED] 150 A Journey In The Desert

Quote:
One day, nine travellers, each with their own car, meet on the northern edge of a great desert, their goal is to explore the interior of the desert by constantly driving due south. Each car can travel forty miles to the gallon, which is also the capacity of their cars' petrol tanks. Their tanks are all full at the start of the journey, and each traveller can also fit nine extra gallon tins of petrol in the back of their car. During the journey, extra gallon tins of petrol can be moved from car to car. None of the travellers can leave their car and they can't leave any caches of petrol along the way in the desert since they might get stolen.
HOW FAR SOUTH CAN AT LEAST ONE OF THE TRAVELLERS REACH, GIVEN THAT THEY ALL NEED TO RETURN BACK NORTH TO THE EDGE OF THE DESERT?

The image scan looks pretty poor, but that's because of the image, it's very hard to read, even on the card.

Well this was an easy solve:

Four new wave cards, two blue and two red were given to us at the Clapham Common meet. Ollie beat up four small children and scratched the eyes out of Skenmy to get at the card.

Yeah, but it was worth it. I'm at the top of the leaderboard for at least a month now. And I didn't "beat up four small children" I beat up five.

um i dont think that is the answer. first of all, they have to get back to the north edge, so they need to save half their petrol for the return journey. if one car went the full 360 miles and used up all their 9 petrol cans they would only have the 40 miles worth of petrol originally in the tank left to get back. i think the idea is for some cars to only go a certain amount of the way and give their spare petrol to another car who would then have more room in the boot etc etc. but my head isnt up to actually working on the answer right now :s either way, i think your SOLVE tag in the title is a little premature.

edit: nevermind, ive just seen the leaderboard and realised you actually got the points. apologies, but i still dont get why thats the answer in that case, can we see your workings?

rach =)

Cool. Did you get the others too, Ollie? And if not, any idea who did?

*WB gets over-excited at prospect of new cards* Very Happy

My solve was accepted. My working was:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
All 9 cars drive 40 mile in, each with 9 gallons on their truck. One stays here.
The 8 Others go out to 80 miles, with 8 gallons (having used one to get to this point)
7 go to 120
6 go to 160
5 go to 200
4 go to 240
3 go to 280
2 go to 320
the last one goes to 360 miles, with 1 gallon on his truck. he uses this to get back to 2.
The trucks pick up a tank of petrol as they pass each car.

there's my working!

I didn't get the others, Ryandrew did. He's working on getting them up at the moment.

On the back is Mazy River Part 2. I've put it on the Card Catalog, so I didn't think it was worth putting it here

In case anyone is unaware of the card catalog, the back of the card is displayed at this page.

I think the answer to this card is incorrect..

I spent some time working this one out, and I'm pretty sure that the answer ollie gives is incorrect. Well, unless i have misread the question which is equally if not more likely!! Smile

Ollie's answer is definitely the answer the website accepts, but I think I have one where the cars can go further.

Just sent an email to customer support with my solution, and if its accepted I'll let you know what i did.

Or you could work it out yourself !! Smile

BB

UPDATE:

Customer service got back. My solution relies upon cars waiting in the desert (with drivers and fuel), which MC think constitutes a "cache" of fuel. So I'm wrong, and ollie's answer stands! Smile

Although MC did say the puzzle could have been better worded, so they will be making changes for the next print run and updating info of the solve page for the card...
