tweaked_up.wav transcript

tweaked_up.wav wrote:

Lady: Oh sure, your daddy just wants to keep you safe...
Jan: I know.
Lady: But he's still a jackass.
<both laugh>
Jan: I caught him reading a manual once.
Lady: <laughing>Oh sure No?
Jan: Navy publication FM973, Child rearing for part time and auxiliary personnel. You should have seen the chapter on discipline!
Lady: <laughing>Oh no!!
<both laugh>
Jan: Hey, when you were my age, did you...could you...
Lady: You gonna spit this out before sunrise?
Jan: Well there was this guy I met, and something he said just started me thinking.
Lady: Uh oh...
Jan: I've been tweaked up haven't I? Not like you and Dad I know that...but...some.
Lady: Honey, I...
Jan: And that's OK, hey, I'm grateful, but...let me do something with it, let me do something.

The old lady has a southern accent, and unlike a lot of posts in this thread, I believe it's NOT Jan's Mother, possibly a grandmother, or possibly just a family friend. I think this will be in the same story arc as domestic_skills.wav, but after that particular wav file, given Ranger D's description of it (There was cheering in the background like from a sports game which Gladis mentions going to watch in domestic_skills).

It does seem odd that Jan apparently doesn't appear to like Gladis in domestic_skills.wav when in tweaked_up.wav they're gettting along really well together. Guess I'll have to wait and listen to domestic_skills myself to see how it all fits together.

The old lady...

Is it just me, or does someone else take that to mean the 'old lady' is Jan's mother? I think if it weren't, she would have said "you and my Dad"... but saying "you and Dad" seems to imply she's speaking to her mother.

Just an observation...

I definitely took it to be her mother when I first heard it on the phone. However, Malrog does make a valid point. At no point in this audio do it say that the woman is Jan's mother, and bext on contextual clues from the description of other audio files containing the same voice it's distinctly possibly that this is not Jan's mother. The woman must have a strong tie to the family (JJ's girlfriend, as I believe has been suggested elsewhere, or some other very close tie), though, or the line from Jan, "not like you and Dad," wouldn't sound right. That's not the way you address someone with whom you aren't very familiar.

As with some other story elements, we shouldn't expect an audio clip to define everything within it so we 'have all the facts'. I don't think the fact that the audio doesn't say "Jan's mother" means that it isn't Jan's mother... it doesn't necessarily fit in the dialogue at any point. It may be revealed to us in another clip, or a future clip.

Secondly, the only time I'd say "you and Dad" really would be within direct family. Even speaking to my aunt or uncle, I'd say "my dad", not just "dad". The latter is a grey area, because some people might, but I still strongly believe it is her mother. And sister is right out, I mean, the woman is old... too old to be a sibling or closely-aged cousin, IMO.

I still think the mother is the best point. On one hand, nothing has outrightly said "Jan's mother", but on the other hand, there are a number of hints that seem to point towards that being true. In this case at the moment, I find the latter easier to believe...

that was a very long winded explanation ... Razz

Concur with the above quoted point. Probably the most concise I've seen posted thus far. I never refer to "you and dad" or "you and mom" to anyone but my direct family, otherwise the audience could mistake me to mean their father instead of mine.

more info from the field

according to angelo
Your_Fault went like:
Quote:
erything went per usual. The operator came on, asked what ship I was on and then after receiving the password played the file back. We repeated it a few times so both of us could hear then parted company.

The file seemed to be Kamal talking with Sophia (it was a bit hard to hear so it could of been another guy and gal...). He spoke of his mother and specifically how she died of some disease. Then the female reasured him with the not your fault.

did his mom die of some genetic disease too? if she did then maybe what his sister had was genetics or maybe his mom and his sister were part of something....but why would he be left out? hmmmm

"Unstoppable" went live...(props to you hottenators out there!!!) Rock On

So, Kamal's sister died of a genetic defect? After being the smartest, fastest, luckiest, etc. <spec> Can you say "flash cloning"?</spec> I think all the spec about the SII/SIII connection is on target. And while Kamal's sister may not have wound up being named Jan, she may have wound up as part of the Spartan project.

I'm going to agree with Malrog. It sounds to me like her Grandmother.
Her dad doesn't sound old enough to be married to /date a lady that old.

Jan: Gee, I'm underage sir, an offer like that would be illegal.
Man: <creepy laugh> I guess that, if I win, I'll find some babysitting for you to do.

OK, I can't quite figure out exactly what the man says before Jan says Yah? Logically, he would be saying "I've got a deal for you" but however much I listen, I can't convince myself that's what he's saying. Probably not important anyway.

So...who is the grub?

-Malrog

He's saying "m'gotta deal for you".

[SPEC] Probably obvious, maybe Trout:
Jan just beat Thin at pool because of her ability to control the balls (more evidence to support her as Kamal's Sister?).
This may be on base, as the guy talking obviously knows what she is ("Whoever's running you").
She must have gotten herself in trouble by beating the boss (Thin)

I think that "Thin" is the guy she's talking to -- he's possibly speaking of himself in the 3rd person. They agree to certain terms we don't quite understand and decide to play a game called "Moons".

Looks like "Run for Cover" follows this one, and then "Kiss Them". "Thin" makes his shots, while bragging over his skills at the game. Jan then beats him while mocking his little speech.

I realize some of this has been spec'ed previously but these three clips seem to go together.

Did anyone look up the word Jannisary? Here is an encyclopedia page that expalins them:

http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Janissary

Jannisary is a type of soldier, just as a Spartan is a type of soldier. It seems ONI likes to name their programs after the troops of old. All we need is a guy names Hoplyte and the set will be complete.

Yes. Back on August 24, in fact, when Jan first showed up in the .wav files. See this thread, among several other places.

Gladis

Gladis may also be a member of J^J's Unit. and thus an honorary Aunt. Jan's resentment may actually be indirectly directed at her father because company is keeping her home. Would uncle Otto also be part of the unit?Time will tell.

I've been half thinking something like this since J 2 made the "It's on my unit... we should have controlled the situation better." comment in law_abiding.

I'm not sure about the familial reference. Perhaps some of the SPEC about Jan not being the biological daughter of J 2 has some merit. [SPEC="WILD"] Maybe she's being raised "as normal as possible" as part of the SIII program [/SPEC]. (PS, I'm not original in the SIII spec, as you can see here, and search currently turns up 34 "SIII" hits as of the time of this post.)
