14:21PDT -- AXON HOT!
Location: Dekalb, IL Barnes & Noble

Wooo! I'm really glad I got this one now that I see it was for the 5/5 Smile
I got there and rang the phone with my cell to see if it would, and it did not. So, experimentally, I hit the volume button on the phone and it started ringing! Booya. Milled around the store for 15 minutes or so, then back to the phone. Rang about 1 minute late according to my clock... but whatever. Had to repeat "Apocalypso" 3 times before it took. "Repeat" worked fine the first time, though, and "continue."
I got a crappy recording of this call, too crappy to post, really.
For future reference, the phone is in the back of the store by the restrooms. I felt kinda creepy, especially when the wimmins walked by.

Sidenote to skilletaudio and Dorkmaster (and any locals who may be lurking):

Waaaaay far away from that intersection and Monsanto. Across the street from super wal-mart and north a block, behind Applebee's and next to Target, that's where B&N is. I threw B&N's address into geocode.com on a whim, remembering someone's spec about museums and book depositories. Exact coordinate match with ILB. Bingo. Very Happy

Yeah, the clips as heard over the phone have quality issues - one voice much louder than the others, or the dinner one with the dishware noises drowning everything out. Actually the pool-playing one on the website gives you an idea - pretty hard to hear the other voices and lots of background "ambience".

It's so pronounced I wonder if we're supposed to be noticing where the mike must be located to have gotten sound levels like we are hearing.

pthree: I'm glad you made it out to the DeKalb/Sycamore location, you saved me the trip! I'm in Naperville and figured I was probably the closest, so I was planning to head out that way on Friday.

I successfully enhottenated the 14:35 your_fault in Hinsdale. Big thanks to Dorkmaster for figuring out where the axon was and then posting that info here Smile You weren't kidding about there being eleventy billion little shops across from the train station, it's right in the downtown area. Corner Bakery was pretty empty, so I got myself a mocha and grabbed a table near the phone. There was quite a long pause after I said Apocalypso and before I got confirmation and the recording continued. It gave me the message about hardware difficulties at the location blah blah blah. I don't have a recording or an exact transcript, but here's the gist:

Kamal and a woman are having a conversation. Kamal is referring to a female, I'm assuming his sister. He says she died of metabolic cascade failure, which is doctorspeak for "everything falls apart". She couldn't walk when she got home from the hospital and couldn't speak a couple weeks later. It took her a year to die. He'd push her around in her wheelchair, but she didn't even recognize him. He sounds sad and the woman is apologetic. He mutters something like "We never lost" or "We never used to lose". That's about all I remember, though we're only one axon shy of you guys being able to go listen to it yourselves Smile

Date & Time

Hey guys, Im new to this forum, but I've been very active in the IRC as well as on the wiki. Anyway, I thought I'd throw in my little spec in here as well as on the wiki.

I think we can all agree that kamal's sister is one of the spartans. Obviously, she showed extraordinary traits, was selected, and was abducted and taken to Reach for training. She was replaced with a flash clone which died shortly thereafter from genetic problems that were really caused by the cloning. But the REAL Kamal's sister was off training on Reach to become a SPARTAN.

What is most useful about this little fact is that it (finally) allows us to put a date on the axon plot happenings. We learned from very_lucky that Kamal's sister is 4 years younger than him. That means that he was 10 or 11 years old when his sister would have been taken away for training on reach, because she would have been 6 or 7 at the time, just like all the other spartan candidates. Anyway, we know that when the children were taken to reach was September of 2517. At this time I am guesing Kamal is 10 or 11, and in the Axon plot he is in medical school, probly in his mid 20s. That means that the axon plot takes place roughly 15 years after the children for the spartan program are taken to Reach, which means that the axon plot probably takes place sometime between 2530 and 2535.

For reference, the war with the Covenant begins in 2525, and the events of Halo take place in 2552.

This doesn't say anything about the date of the Jersey/Durga story, however. Also, I do not think the theory of Jan being Kamal's sister makes much sense. She is 17, which would make him 21 at the oldest, which is a bit young for a grad student. Additionally, if Jan were a spartan, she would have been training on reach until age 14, and if she had been, we would probably know about it. Hence, i don't think she is Kamal's sister. If my date theory is anywhere even remotely close to being correct, then it also means that J^2 is definitely not a spartan.

My dates are drawn directly from the chapter titles in Fall Of Reach

Since when do you have to be a grad student to get into a medical school. I have friends at university now doing medicine at the ages of 19/20/21. OK, maybe they're only in nursing, but they still study the nervous system, anatomy etc.
[spec] Who says Kamal isn't doing Nursing instead of training to become a Doctor. [/spec]

He does. In something_i_carry.
edit: actually it is Sophia who says "when did you decide to become a DOCTOR"

Regardless, the point is that it clearly sets the date of the axon plot at nearly 2 decades BEFORE the events of teh first halo game. That changes a lot of theories and disproves a lot of speculation.

Hmmm... That's a little odd. But then again, there were two axons within a 1/2 hour of each other that I got with a Phantom Beekeeper here in Albuquerque on Tuesday.

Time: 07:27 Long: -106.621090 Lat: 35.084890 Location: - Zimmerman Library, Albuquerque, NM
Time: 07:53 Long: -106.621090 Lat: 35.084890 Location: - Zimmerman Library, Albuquerque, NM

Then again, those were two different wavs, taxes_suck and very_lucky.

Hey guys... my grandmother just passed away, so I'm going back home for the weekend. That means no axon hunting in Pittsburgh for me until I get back into town on Monday. Sorry...

Hey everyone:

We've been able to get two of the three axons hot here in Phoenix again. The third (15:37PDT) just can't be figured out. The address of 3131 E, Indian School road matches the phone address on payphone.org and the gps coordinates as well. There are two phones at this address setting side by side. I called both and made sure that the ringers work and they do. They never ring though. These coords have been on every axon list so far and have never been hot. Any suggestions?

Also I've been wondering if anything has been said about the latest ILB blog titled SIX DEGREES OF. Remember that previously one letter was missing from extraordinary? What if the same is the case here? What if it is really SIX DEGREES OFF? In the blog Dana talks about finding these cold axons and says she's willing to go the extra degree or one more degree or something like that. If you add One More Degree to SIX DEGREES OFF you would be SEVEN DEGREES off. The lucky seven again. What if some of these cold and never connected repeating on the list axons are SEVEN DEGREES OFF from the location we think they are?

Any thoughts?

Can't really argue with that idea, except that there's a simpler explanation. "Six degrees of separation", the theory that you can connect any two people on the planet by finding somone person A knows, then finding someone that new person knows, and so on, six times, until you get to your target person B. So, if you know Kevin Bacon personally, you say "I'm one degree from Kevin Bacon", and if I know you, then I'm two degrees from Kevin Bacon.

So, she's just asking us, if we don't directly know someone in those towns, try to find someone who does, or someone who knows someone who does, etc.
