Adrian brought a GPS unit today. It's confirmed that the 56 Dean Street Phones are the right coordinates.

And of course they didn't ring again.

At this point I don't know what to do except wait another week for the PMs to change the coordinates the way they did for cranky_old_man.

(BTW, thanks for the thread, Aliendial.)

[EDIT]Woops, corrected the address. Thanks Malrog[/EDIT]

Thanks for the report. Hopefully we will get another London location.

London Axon escapades!

First, a small correction to Flidget Jerome's post, it's the phones outside number 56 Dean Street (hope that prevents confusion)

Anyway, here's the tale from the expedition tonight:

There were a lot of people there, which was cool, and mad props to you all for turning up (some for the n th time!). The London Axonators were, in no particular order, danhon, Adrian, Fi, Flidget Jerome & friend (sorry, can't remember her name), myself, Rogue Element, Rowan & Jamie - the last two are not from the unforums. Even better, Adrian had a GPS unit, so we were able to work out exactly which phones were being pointed to, and it was the pair of booths outside 56 Dean Street, as we first suspected when the coordinates went up over a week ago! You may remember that we tried those booths last Saturday with no luck?

Anyway, we decided to try them again tonight, so there I was, stood in the same Soho phone booth that I was in last Saturday, surrounded by postcards advertising various pre-op transexuals, trying to look like I wasn't "shopping"! I even got my phone out to call the phone (to double check that the phone received incoming calls) then realised it probably looked like I was taking down numbers...ARGH! Anyway, the time came and went completely uneventfully, as it did for the people staking out the other booth in the pair and the people at the more northerly Dean St phone booth (about 100 metres away). Booo Crying or Very sad

The Slug & Lettuce, which is mentioned in this thread as being a possible alternate location for the GPS points does not have a payphone. Also, there are no payphones around the junction of Wardour & Meard (where the GIS tech put the GPS point). Plus, since Adrian's GPS device put the coords right smack bang on the Dean Street phones, we're all pretty convinced that it has to be those.

Well, we, as a group, have come to the conclusion that there really isn't much more we can do. If it isn't the phones to which the GPS coordinates point to, what can we do, really? There are SO many phones in the area, and there have been herculean efforts by many and varied people to stake all these out, and we've managed to eliminate a vast quantity of them (probably all of the nearby ones). So even if the GPS coordinates are pointing to the wrong phone (which makes life nearly impossible in the first place), I'm confident that we would have managed to get the call. However, since we haven't, we can only assume that the GPS coordinates are wildly wrong, or the phonecalls haven't been getting through, both of which we can do very little about. It would be so much easier if the GPS pointed to an area with a substantially lower "phone density" (e.g. Hyde Park). The London Axonators there tonight agreed that there was very little point to trying again with the coordinates as they currently are (at least, that's what was said by us all) so unless someone who wasn't there tonight tries and gets very lucky, I'm afraid I have to declare the London Axon a failure. Though not through wont of trying! I'm very proud of everyone who has tried, and I just wish we could have had some success to share amongst ourselves!

[META]To finish, I will post the e-mail that I have sent to Dana, in the hopes that the PMs will see it and recognise our plight. I would suggest that anyone else who wants to, do the same thing. The e-mail address is danatwingSPLATgmail.com[/META]

- Malrog stands tall in defeat (since there wasn't much he could do to prevent it!)

The e-mail what I wrote:
Hello Dana,

I believe some of my fellow compatriots have e-mailed you in the past, and I decided to follow their lead and bring you up to date with the situation as it stands.

A number of us went to try and get the London Axon today (danhon, Adrian, Fi, Flidget Jerome & friend, myself, Rogue Element, Rowan & Jamie - the last two are not from the unforums). However, we failed again, though not through lack of trying! Adrian had a GPS unit this time, which pointed us right to a pair of phone booths outside number 56 Dean Street. Now these booths we have tried before, but we thought "What the heck" and tried them again. No call from Melissa Surprised( So it's been over a week now and we still haven't got the phone, and everyone in the London crew is feeling somewhat disheartened and it's such a shame because we really have been trying hard to help out the cause!

So...we know exactly which phones the GPS coordinates point to, but they don't ring! We've also tried a large number of phones in the local area, without success, and we really don't know what to do with ourselves now. There are SO many phones in the area, and while we think we've checked out the vast majority of them, we really can't do much more. If the phones that the GPS coordinates point to don't ring, there's not really much else we can do. It would be so much easier if the phones were in a less congested area, like Hyde Park or something, but with the location being what it is...well it's difficult to say the least! I keep thinking maybe Melissa is having difficulties getting through because we're the first non-US axon, but I really can't see why that would be.

Anyway, sorry to be the bearer of such bad news, but I thought you should know that we are all trying our very best to help you out, and if there's any help you can give us that would be awesome.

All the best
Malrog

Let me expand on the report. Some of us assembled at the Costa Coffee on Shaftesbury and Wardour at 5:15pm to exchange strategy and swap war stories. We then left at 5:30pm to scout out the locations. I turned on my GPS unit (Garmin Foretrex 201) which locked on to four or five satellites with an accuracy of 30ft (10 metres).

Using the exact GPS co-ordinates of the axon, I located the axon at 56 Dean Street to an accuracy of at least 20 metres, such that it is *absolutely impossible* that we had the wrong phone booths, especially since there were no other phone booths within at least 50 metres.

We waited at those phone booths and a couple of others, meeting up with some other beekeepers, and 6:07pm came and went. So, three possibilities are apparent, in order of descending likelihood.

1) The PMs have supplied us with the wrong GPS co-ordinates
2) They are ringing the wrong phone
3) My GPS isn't working properly

I've used my GPS for several months now. It works fine, and furthermore, it correlates with the location previously estimated by London beekeepers. Something else is wrong here.

Still, being Brits, we triumphed through adversity and had a good time anyway. I've attached a photo of some of the beekeepers there (from left to right: Malrog, Dan, Adrian, Fi and Tom).

*sigh*

You guys and the guys in Las Vegas - so much work to prove a negative! I guess all we can do is hope for a re-positioning. You've done so much more work than anyone on a single axon. "Fun" as I am sure it has been, you gotta stop beating your head against the wall some time.

Now a game note - silly as it seems at this point, of course Dana is not in any position to fix this. It was the SP who hid the recipe3 axons for us. So may I suggest an email to ladybee777 may be more appropriate?

PS - I know you guys are all close personal friends now, but for those of us across the pond, we need some names on the pic! (Yeah, I can probably work out which Hon is which, and is that Fi? But I need a little more help...) Wink Thanks!

While he didn't add text to the actual pic, I think you'll find Adrian did list the names of the people in the photo just above the attachment. Smile

Given the current game situation, do we even know that emails to this address will reach the SP? From a purely META standpoint, I would hope that both e-mail addresses would be read by the PMs and since there is this confusion with the hotmail address, and I wouldn't know who to write to (in-game) I chose the less confusing option. If anyone feels they want to write to the hotmail address, please feel free to do so, you can even copy and paste the text from my e-mail to Dana if you so wish!

From an in-game standpoint, I personally was not keen on e-mailing to the hotmail address, for the simple reason that I've no idea who would read the e-mail, and I could be giving away some of the SP's secrets, given that the recipe3 axons are meant to be secret ones that are not for us.

- Malrog doesn't want the PF to take away our peephole to the recipe3 axons.

Heracles never worked so hard

What a lovely crowd you Londoners are. Thanks for the report and the pretty pic. No one anywhere could ask more of ARG folk as you intrepid Brits have labo(u)red. I hope friendship is the fruit of all this.

Sarah, for what it's worth. Also not from unforums. Not an ARG player at all, actually. . . .

That's what I did enjoy about the axon hunting, the pre and post coffee shop meetings that were like 'ARG Players Anonymous'.

I believe that both Flidget and someone else (Malrog?) sent emails of the predicament and the correct phone numbers to SP before she was captured.

And somebody did double-check the French House right? Oh well, time to wait for a change at the Operator end and hope we Brits get another chance.

[SPEC] As I mentioned before on hunt, there must be a reason why Melissa is looking here for a crew member. It's odd that she only tries one hit. Or was it the Princess? [/SPEC]

Whatever else, this bodes well for Szygy should and physical stuff be required.

An Alaskan Yankee in Leicester Square

Hello fellow hunters,

I have been following the events of ilovebees.com with great interest the past few months. My travels have brought me back to London where I was happy to see that there is an axon that I could still have a chance to see go hot. I am hoping it might be possible to meet up with other hunters in London. Please drop me an email, or maybe just keep an eye out for the Giant Alaskan wandering around looking at payphones around 5:30 tomorrow.
