No, it's pronounced fie, like fee fie fo fum? :S

anyhoo, i researched the golden ratio for my cambridge interview last year, just finding the books I had on it if anyone cares?

it's also equal to 1+1/(1+1/(1+1/(1+1/....etc

(the 1.6 version, get rid of the first 1 to get the 0.6 version obv. Smile)

In the letters section refering to the Earth Store;

Quote:
I certainly did not appreciate the "vision" behind "Earthen Pop Hits as Envisioned and Interpreted by Aurora Belle;" the album played during our visit to the store and was truly painful

The capital letters of the underlined phrase spell out Epheiab, move the b before the i and it becomes Ephebia. As far as I know this is class of people within the ancient greek city system. Young men who have proved themselves to be of a certain age and of that city enter a form of college. I'm still looking it up at the moment but here are some links to it.

************************************************************

Also does anyone find the phrasing of this sentence strange(the double dashes?)
Quote:
Proprietor Mitchell Alba is more concerned with his bottom line than with providing a truthful slice of Earth life -- a service, mind you -- for Perplexians.

Edit: Added question about sentence phrasing, rather than add a post.

twenty years!

Quote:
"I shall continue to patronize Hannigan's, which has been replicating Earth goods for nearly twenty years."

Twenty years! Is this the oldest reference to Perplexians knowing about earth?

Phee phi pho phum. Phew that you've returned to mum.

Irrelevant?

Phi with an upper case "P" is 1.6180339887...

Well...it's usually spelt Fee Fi Fo Fum, so the Ph's seem to be deliberate...but, could be just to alliterate with phew.

I was thinking it was a nod to weephun. He always uses "ph" instead of "f"

Phi with an upper case "P" is 1.6180339887..., while phi with a lower case "p" is 0.6180339887, the reciprocal of Phi and also Phi minus 1.
I'm just getting this from the net btw, I don't know much about Phi, except that it is another mathematical constant...
*examines website*
It occurs when you divide a line into two sections, B (larger section) and C (smaller section), and call the whole line A, so that the proportions between B and C are the same as those between A and B. This happens where you place the dividing point so that A is Phi*B amd B is Phi*C.

There you go. Now, is it relevant at all?[/i]

Phi is the constant for the 'Golden Ratio'. Used to make the golden rectangle and other relationships of 'optimally pleasing' proportions.

No. They have been patronising the shop for 20 years. The shop could have been open for twice as long, and even then that assumes that it was the first of its kind. And I'm sure PPs knew about earth before hand, they just didnt see any commercial benefit to it.

Hmmm do you think I could slip "Sente couldn't find arse with a map claims Earthling" into that View From Earth column?

Actually, it does say they've been replicating Earth goods for nearly twenty years.

Give it a shot, if they don't take it as a serious column, then tell them it's a piece of satirical humour. It's sure to get a few laughs out of the PMs anyway Smile

i think they're doubled because they're actually hyphens, and for the sentence to make sense they ought to be dashes so whover wrote it just put two in to make them look right.

As for the ancient Greek thing, it differed depending on when we're talking about. Basically it was a form of conscription until it became voluntary, then it was more of a university/philopsophy school thing

"And remember, truth can never be told so as to be understood, and not be believed."

That's a quote from the poet William Blake, I don't think anyone mentioned that yet. Any guess on whether it's significant?

The Hand (January 11 - February 10)
Stop being so frenetic; it's making me nervous. Roll on back to the bar. No *eel and cucumber* for you, though; it wouldn't sit right when you're so unsettled

Marchs 28 futures section had..
The Eagle (March 11 - April 10)
Floundering? Out of options? Do what I do when trouble hits: Sushi! Have an *eel and cucumber* roll; it brings you luck.
The Baby (February 11 - March 10)
You are as beautiful as a flower. Why do you let this ugly-minded person make you dinner? (*Eel and cucumber* rolls can be lucky for all signs, really. Yum.)

May be something too, or Madame Bianca might just have a love for the eel and cucumber.

Alright, I was wrong about the shop, but PPs must have known about earth before then.

Great quote, I'll add it to my collection. Very Happy

As for the futures, I'm kinda worn out on them. After so much spec'ing and grasping at straws (and I should know being one of the *graspingest*), then to get a really pretty simple puzzle in the end, its kind of hard to keep trolling so deep in these waters...

Ah well, consider that sucker submitted - took me a while to remember a) what day I posted it, and b) where the Shakespeare it was! And no, it wasn't down the back of the sofa...

*edit to include joke from Doctor Who*

Maybe she's just a single lady, and.... *fades into quietness*

... runs around sticking cucumbers through peoples letterboxes shouting "The Martians are coming! The Martians are coming!"

*disclaimer: this joke has been around since the dawn of time (and letterboxes), and was probably used as an advertising gimmick by cucumber salesmen to sell their green skinned bags of water.*
