but if they take away it being at all cooperative, we could have some trouble here. no one here on uf is solely in it for the money, and some like me dont care about the reward at all. making it a individual game where YOU yourself have to buy cards YOU solve them (at risk of others stealing your 'points') is what isnt appealing to me at all.

did that make sense? my thinking is a little off today Confused

I'm not sure that makes sense, I'm afraid! The fact that you might be required to possess your own, individual card to "get points" doesn't affect the cooperative aspect whatsoever - because everyone can still work on the solves together. It seems more like you're trying to say "a situation where I have to spend money isn't appealling to me at all" ?

So are we saying that if we didn't get a parcel today you aren't getting one?

Right now, nothing is certain. That said, it doesn't look too hopeful, but the morning post should bring more answers. There's no postal delivery for UK'ers on Sunday and Monday, so Tuesday would be the next possible day, but I think we should give it a week until we can definitely say there's nothing left to arrive. Now if you don't mind, I have to go and delete all trace that I ever suggested "anyone who responded within the first eight hours should be in the 333."

I know what you mean, I really didn't expect it to only be those F5'ers that got them... Ah well, roll on tomorrow's post...

Well, except it will be more or less a given that the top of the leaderboard will be composed of those with the deepest pockets. Meaning it's really not much of a leaderboard at all, at least one that measures puzzle-solving ability.

Simply not true. It doesn't matter how much money you have, if you can't solve a simple ROT, your not going to get many points. Thats why it's essential that we have unfiction. Combined, we have far more puzzle-solving power and monetary support than any individual or small group can muster. Anyway, these card puzzles seem to be more like the training excercises melissa gave us in ILB than the entire point of the game, after all, sente said there was more to come

We're not all fighting over a monetary reward, we are trying to return a cultural and historical artifact to it's (arguably) rightful owners.

yeah but i think what jeb is saying, erekose, is that even if the unfiction puzzle-maestros solve the puzzles beautifully, if you have to buy them to input the solutions and win the points, then those with the biggest wallets win the points.

Right. I actually *like* the cards, I just haven't seen a feasable leaderboard scheme yet. The hard work of Unfictioners could become victim to leeches who are willing to drop a lot on eBay.

Leaderboards are tricky things and easy to abuse. For example, the New York Times has a leaderboard for those who finish their online crossword the fastest, but it is quite possible to simply solve the puzzle offline before entering it online and get a blazing fast time. Therefore, anyone who wants a time taken seriously has to have a starting time right at midnight when the puzzle goes live.

In addition, I have yet to see an online leaderboard without some sort of cheating involved. With the reward on the line, you can bet people will try.

Anyhow, there's threads on Meta starting, so any of my future thoughts will hop to over there.

I think that's a sure-fire bet. I wouldn't be surprised if there was some kind of test for, say, the top twenty to weed out the cheaters.

Anyone State-side recieve a package yet? I'm pretty sure I should be in the 333 as I entered within the first minute or so the site went live, but no package yet. Yes, they are all solved, but I want my badge! Very Happy

Nope, no parcel for Ohio residents at this time, at least not me.

I was online also and submitted in the first minute that the form was available. We're just going to have to wait until mid week or so. Remember that whole thing with the tea tax? Karma.

I don't see that the PMs could even consider making the codes only function once, and therefore you have to own the card. I, like many others I imagine, might buy one pack for fun, realise that you have to actually own the cards to be able to get the points and then, knowing that I haven't the funds to buy the most cards of anyone playing (and therefore get the most points), decide there's no point buying ANY more. Then I'd just play at working out the puzzles that are scanned for fun, rather than for the hope of winning.
