the only rank that appears to have changed rank is Bluejacking - all the rest have exactly the same values.....and the only one that was posted in 1996 was Hasbian - all the rest are from 2003

I tried the address dark.net only to be asked..

"what exactly were you looking for?"

[cue sinister music]

but the only intersting result so far was inputing the answers in alphebaticed version [adbca] into TINY URL and was taken to a Business Week news site about hunting Hackers!

other than that - buggerall!

The card says something about how it sometimes takes many years after a word is first used to be added to the dictionary. When the answers are put in order, the difference between the year the word was first used and when it was added to wordspy.com are: 1,6,0,6,1... also when the words are listed alphabetically, the numbers are 6,1,0,1,6... the name on the card says "ANNA" making me think the palindrome number pattern is important.

Also, highlighter breaks the alphabetical pattern on the page, and dark is supposed to begin the page, so these must be important too.

Word Spy : The Word Lover's Guide to Modern Culture by Paul McFedrie is available on amazon

<long shot>it might have something to do with placement on the page... </long shot>

[EDIT: embedded url. yanka.]

Here is the amazon review (bold parts by yours truly):

Quote:
Longtime wordsmith McFedries, author of more than 40 books on language, believes that new words are one of life's "small excellencies." Neologisms, he asserts, are one of the best ways of understanding a changing world and culture. For McFedries' purposes, a word is considered "new" if it doesn't appear in any general dictionary, first appeared in the written record no earlier than 1980, and has a track record. Although he does fudge his criteria, he offers many informative comments about why and how new words are formed, noting three essential factors: the word is easy to pronounce and understand, is short, and fills a gap in the language. In 22 chapters, McFedries lists new words in boldface and provides definitions and cultural context; chapter topics include relationships ("Google dating"), war ("threat fatigue"), marketing ("advertainment"), business ("dotcom-uppance"), and angst ("niche worrying"). Thanks to the Internet, new words are being coined and disseminated at lightning speed, and McFedries proves to be a knowledgeable guide to the "neological frenzy."

I think akama has it right.

Florescent light

ok- so people tried fluorescent light on this card, given that it says "highlight" and the definition uses the word "fluorescent" ?

If all of the tests have been done to all of the cards so far - or at least the daylight, heat, UV, cold and microtype searches - has that been posted anywhere?

Sorry, I did search, but it seemed that some cards had postings mentioning they had been tested while the rest of the threads are silent.

Back of Wordspy

Hi,

Forgive me as I am a total newbie at this but why has this card got a grey back (no map or play instructions)?

Looks like there is something written on the back but cannot make it out.

Any ideas?

Argy
