[HALO News] MS commisions script for Halo Movie

http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire2005/index.php?category=0&id=30308

Quote:
Microsoft Develops Halo Film

Microsoft hired screenwriter Alex Garland (28 Days Later) to script a feature-film version of its best-selling video-game franchise Halo, to be presented as a complete package, Variety reported.

This strategy is the handiwork of ex-Columbia Pictures president Peter Schlessel, who quit the studio to become a producer just over a two years ago. He is expected to serve as a producer in some capacity on the Halo film, the trade paper reported.

The Halo franchise is one of the most popular in video-game history, having sold more than 12.8 million units and grossed approximately $600 million since its 2001 debut. Last year, Halo 2 sold 6.4 million copies and was the second-bestselling video game of the year.

The plot of Halo centers on a warrior soldier known only as "Master Chief" who battles a group of alien religious zealots who believe one of their most sacred artifacts is located on Earth.

Second best selling video game of the year? What came first? I thought it annahilated the competition?

Enough lemmings probably bought the new Madden game to put it in the number one spot.

Actually I think it was Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Evil or Very Mad

Who is driving this bus?

Excellent find Nola.

I wonder whose idea this was, Bungie's or Microsoft's?

I only have three things to say about this:

1. There had better be a LOT of interaction with Bungie on this.
2. They better not try to retell the story of either of the games. Go with either The Fall of Reach or something original.
3. They better decide right now to make this thing canon.

4. They better include an ILB sequel campaign to go along with the movie!

I agree with you 110% Smile

I think the single most important thing they can do right now, (while they are in the PLANNING STAGES) is to make sure it fits with the games, books, ILB, etc. and that Bunige gets behind this either 0% or 100%. If it's not worth doing well, don't do it. To me, it seems like anything that wasn't a video game is not considered "official" to Bungie, so they better get their frigging ducks in a row for this one.

As for the plot, I expect to see the main events of Halo 1 and 2 possibly merged together in one film. It's the easy way out, and requires the least work for maximum profits. However, I believe that if they are unhappy with some elements with the books, use those stories for the movie and DO IT RIGHT THIS TIME. If the movie is just a rehash of the games, I will be one of the many who download and watch this film before it's release, because it won't be worth my money. The only reason I don't sell back my copy of Halo 2 is because I have friends that I play with (very infrequently) on Live. But now I'm getting off topic. Razz

So with that said, anyone have Joe Staten's email address? Twisted Evil

I really don't want to see a retelling of either (or both) of the games. I've already experienced that story in a far more interactive and immersive way than any movie could provide. And they would, inevitably, change things (read: RUIN things). And if they ruin the Halo movie, there will be no end to the fury. I'm sure I'm not just speaking personally either.
I think adapting The Fall of Reach would be great. Most people who've played the games haven't read the book, so that movie would be a great way to expand the Halo universe for them, and not just chop up something that's already been done well enough, just to make a quick buck.

I think this is all very interesting... one of the things that made made Halo so enjoyable for me (and Halo 2 a bit of a let down), was that Halo shoved you right into the conflict knowing nearly nothing about the war or the covenant... you just knew they hated your guts and there was this mysterious ring. After that, the flood twist it what sealed the game as the best ever. If you can bring that same experience to the masses, you have a winner (look at Star Wars and how you go right into the action without knowing who anyone is). HOWEVER, Halo is so mainstream now that the surprise factor is not there anymore, so they have to come up with something different.

I would say that as long as they make a dark, violent and apocalyptic war movie, they should have a winner. Think of the "future" sequences in Terminator or the marine dropship sequences in Aliens...and make sure it gets an R rating.

"Durrr, like, Microsoft spent a bunch of money on this, and we helped shape the story of it and like it goes according to our story lines that we lay out so like it's accurate, okay?

Oh, but, like, no, it's not canon, no way, God, jeez."

Huh, I thought for sure it would have been Madden since it hits multiple platforms. San Andreas sure is great, though.

Back on topic, I remain neutral on this until I find out who's directing and producing. If this ends up being a Uwe Boll/Don Murphy joint (which I doubt it will), I'll be one of the first to declare a jihad on Bungie and Microsoft.

While I was trying to find Joe Staten's e-mail address for Ranger D, I stumbled upon this excerpt of quotes from an interview with Joe Staten:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1274651/posts?page=137,50

Has anyone seen this before? Does anyone have access to the Entertainment Weekly web site where the full interview is posted or a copy of the November 5, 2004 Issue?

I for one wish they would leave their political views out of the game. They are basically saying that they included the Covenent storyline in Halo 2 to provide a politcal statement against the Bush Administration.
I certainly hope that their poliitical statement was not the only reason for the Covenent POV inclusion.

It changes the storyline if you think about it with a political slant on it. And if indeed Bungie was surpised at the "backlash" from Halo fans about not defending Earth, does that mean that their political statement was not well received? Perhaps we (Halo fans) just wanted to be humans and defend our own planet???

I bring this up here because in the past Movies have been used to reflect what Hollywood believes the political atmosphere of America to be. For example Western Movies in the late 60's and Early 70's were supposed to be political statments about Vietnam.

I really hope that they will not use the Halo Movie as a political statement as I think it would detract from the possiblitiy of a great storyline.

I get entertainment weekly.... I'll see if I can't track down my Nov. 5th issue (it's around the house somewhere, I swear) and try and get that article.

I'll also checkout the website and see about getting a copy pasted here.

what are they talking about?

Who are these Republican Radio people who posted the article quoted in this thread? This is how they describe themselves:

Quote:
Whether you listen on the way to the kids' soccer game or while working around the house, Republican Radio offers fresh insights from right-minded individuals.

The quote from the Entertainment Weekly article sounds like it is taken out of context. Even if it wasn't, I have to admit that I never noticed any similarity between Halo2 and the current war in Iraq.

But this quote from the Entertainment Weekly article brings us full circle to the beginning of this thread:
Quote:
The only thing left is the Halo movie. Producers call, but Bungie is playing hard to get. ''We delete voice-mails without even listening to them,'' says Bungie manager Pete Parsons. Staten says their anti-Hollywood stance is about staying focused on making great games.

I guess someone made them an offer they couldn't refuse. Wink
