(pleeeease forgive me if this is all wrong - very n00b etc)

i'm a trainee journalist. i'm writing a piece as practice on my course, shamelessly ripping off the Grauniad from a couple of months ago

basically - PPC, ARGs, cooperation & the reward controversy

anyone fancy offering an opinion? asap?

Click the "www" that appears at the bottom of my post and you'll find some thoughts on ARG stuff, scroll down a bit for a post specifically about Perplex City. Brooke gives her thoughts here while a columnist at ARGtalk rants here. What specific questions are you actually needing answers to?

Napier: Here are the thoughts of a n00b.

The idea of Args as I see them is hugely interesting. Args to me seem like the fantasy worlds we all create as children brought to life. The idea that a game can be played through so many different media, that they take in such a broad sweep of knowledge is fascinating. To me Args are look to be a great leveller, it doesn't matter if you are black or white, young or old, rich or poor, as long as you take part, in whatever way that it is. It caters for such a wide array of people, whatever you are interested in, chances are it will come up somewhere in the Arg. Even if you have no interest in solving puzzles, there's an interesting story to follow. I don't think we have had any form of entertainment that has taken in such a broad sweep of life as Args have. And because Args are so diverse, it can unite people for a single purpose, fun.

Also, I think the £100,000 reward will be very interesting to watch. I don't think any internet community with little "real life" ties(afaik) has encountered a situation like this.

Don't know if it's too late, but my personal opinion is that this whole "who gets the money" controversy is overblown. I think it's a wonderful idea to throw a little wrench in the norm once in a while, and if you're going to do it, do it well and do it big... At least that's my opinion. I feel that the point at hand is how you handle a situation like this, and it's quite apparent from interviews with Adrian Hon (PM), and Sente's letter, that the cards are not the end-all-be-all, and are supplemental and while beneficial to success, not required. Therefore, the reward is open to anyone, and that person, not the game itself, should be responsible as to how they want to divy up the reward, if they want to at all... While ethically I see the issues given to the player, it is my opinion that the game is not responsible for dealing with said issues, and that the player who wins will be the one who will have to battle with those ethical quandries... It will be an interesting ride, to say the least, and I look forward to seeing what the future holds in this regard.

Hope that helps ya, man!

To be honest, I think giving prize money isn't a good idea on ARG's. Aware2 has just started, and altho I've waited ages for it, I had to get a new computer the day after it started so I missed out on like a weeks worth of puzzles and interations. Now I might go on to "win" Aware2 (highly unlikely I know Razz), but I missed out on a weeks worth of solving etc. Who's to say I wont miss out on more before the game is finished?
I lurk on a lot of games. I've been lurking on PPC since early this year, when Project Syzygy was completed, so I know a lot about it, but I'm not solving the puzzles. However, when it gets to end game, I could have the cube in my loft, send it to Sente and get £100,000 for doing nothing, whereas there's people here who have been around since the very first days of Project Syzygy, solving puzzles, tearing their hair out when the didn't recieve the package from Sente etc.
If you're going to give prizes, there needs to be enough money to spread around, and with the amount of people on PPC, the Puppet Masters would need a hell of a lot of money. Or give out something else, the satisfaction of being one of the first 333 people to own a brand spanking new game thqat's not in the stores for another month or two. Or the satisfaction of being part of something so huge and exciting you don't even car about the money. Or there needs to be some sort of grading system, which would be hard to put in place because altho someone might be the first to post a solve on the forum, they might not be the person who solved it.
Personally, I'm not in ARG's for the money, if I was, as soon as I heard that PPC was offering £100,000 I would of jumped straight in there, but I haven't. I enjoy the puzzle solving, and searching through hundreds of pages of binary to find an answer that's staring me in the face.
If I was a PM, I would stay well away from prize money. It's not worth the hassle if you ask me.

Just my tuppence Smile
