Also, I'd encourage anyone interested in issues like this to keep an eye on, and possibly support financially, the EFF.

FYI - I am with T-Mobile & I called them and asked if they could unlock my new 650(yay!) and the woman I talked with said she thought they could. She said it would take 72 hours to process.
We'll see what happens.

I called Sprint this morning, and after 6 phone calls to different numbers, being transferred a gazillion times, and being transferred to a busy signal twice, my new 650 is active. Yah!

I don't know that T-mobile will be able to unlock a phone that's branded for annother company. On the west coast, T-mobile doesn't even officially support the 650 yet. (Though it works great for me with their unlimited internet access now that I have an unlocked phone.)
It is possible that the "crack" for the unlock code has come out in the meantime, and that's how they're going to do it. If T-mobile can't unlock it for you, I suggest taking the phone into the closest T-mobile store. (Make sure you're going to a store that's a dedicated T-mobile location, not a generic place that happens to carry t-mobile products.) The sales people there can usually suggest a good local "repair" place that can unlock phones for a fee. (Price depends on the place.) If the software to unlock the phone is out, they will be able to do it for you.
Good luck!

The person I talked with at T-Mobile said they can get the code from the manufacturer. She made it sound like it wasn't a big deal.
T-Mobile doesn't sell the 650 anywhere in the US, as far as I can tell.
It looks like there are places online where I can get the phone unlocked rather easily. It appears that if you have the right software you can generate the unlock code from the phone's IMEI (aka serial) #.
I'll report back when I hear from T-Mobile.

Good news: I just got a call from Jenn Mann, and she said that she heard that the Treo I received was not compatible with my phone service, so they're looking into it, and they're going to get back to me.
(for the record, I sent Nisha an email with a couple of super-cursory observations about the evening (total duh stuff), and then added a P.S. indicating the incompatibility. I was as polite as could be, because I really wanted to avoid seeming like I was looking a gift horse in the mouth, you know?)
So. I might not have to jump through any unlocking hoops, but we'll see!

Man Jennifer Mann must be getting swamped by the Treo stuff. I have spoken to her a few times and she is in the process of trying to figure out how to fix this situation for us. PalmOne provided them with the phones (They really should have provided unbranded phones) so they are not quite sure on how to fix this problem yet.
In the meantime my Treo 650 is sitting in the box staring at me. I'll wait on calling Tmobile once I see MAttzuma's response from T-Mobile.

She really has been patient and stellar about all this, hasn't she? I am trying not to be a pain at all, so it was a pleasant surprise to get a call from her.
I think she's been great.

T-Mobile unlock code non-update Well, it's Thursday afternoon and no unlock code yet.
The E-Mail I received from T-Mobile's unlock department Monday morning said that it normally takes 24-48 hours but it could take up to two weeks.
I'll hold out for the two weeks & then probably buy the code off EBay.

Well, at least your phone wasn't "stolen".
For those of you who haven't heard the story in chat, I went to the Sprint store to activate my phone. I told them I won the phone from Audi (mistake #1) When they scanned it into the computer, it came up as being reported stolen. The clerk called the manager over and there was a big scene. I tried to explain what I had to do to win the phone as a prize when the manager questioned me (mistake #2). They soooo thought I bought that phone out of the back of a truck in some alley.
The problem is being looked into, but was quite disappointing.
