Firefox Issues Thread

Certain things as pertains to this forum don't seem to work so good with Firefox. For example, hitting the back button doesn't automatically refresh the previous page the way IE does. Perhaps this is a php thing, because it does it just fine with other sites. Or maybe I'm doing something wrong. Also, if you're using the Java interface to access #uf, it either won't work at all, or will eventually crash your browser. Get Chatzilla or mIRC. Or again, maybe I did something wrong. Either way, I'm quite happy with Chatzilla.

Space's new RSS Feeds are wonderful. One simple way to use them - at least, the one that I prefer - is to open your Bookmarks tool, then go to Manage Bookmarks> File > New Live Bookmark and enter the location of the RSS you want, for example, News and Rumors. You can then click and drag it from your Bookmarks sidebar right up to the navigation toolbar to create a simple drop-down RSS. You can even choose which tabs to open links in. There are also many other ways to use the RSS feeds; depends on what you prefer.

Unrelated to UF, I sometimes have a problem accessing secure sites with Firefox if I'm going through someone else's firewall. Specifically, when I sign up for high-speed access in hotel rooms, you usually get a welcome page with the standard form and disclaimer, and even if you fill out everything carefully, Firefox won't recognize the 'continue' button, leaving you in a very comic state of affairs as you repeatedly push an imaginary button like the 'gifted' guy in the Far Side cartoon who can't figure out which way the door opens. You have to repeat the whole process in IE before you can then re-open Firefox as usual.

Other than that, Firefox rules, and I'm not even using many of the extensions that others on this site will find very useful, like the CSS editor, etc.

Perhaps some of the issues I raised above are the result of simple ignorance on my part; I welcome suggestions/comments.

I had the same problem a while back. Firefox pretty much crashed every time I went to any site using Java. If I remember correctly it had something to do with the version of Java I was using and a registry entry? I followed the instructions here and it seems to have solved the problem.

I had installed a mouse gestures plugin, which caused all sorts of Firefox crashiness, especially at this site. I removed it, and in fact re-installed FF, and everything's hunky-dory now.

2 days ago, had a bit of a major slowdown and freeze problem. Turned out I was using Adblock and the cookie block far too well, some ads simply were demanding to get in and would freeze things up. Cleared out both of those block things, and it all went smooth.

I hate ads.

I found that Adblock works best if you are specific, and use the asterisks/wildcards a lot and go after, say, "*page2ad.googlesyndication*" rather than just blasting away. Also, I learned to use Adblock to go after iframes, and the "Nuke Image" extension to remove jpgs and gifs. Seems to work better.

When I first got Adblock I went completely power mad, and starting going to sites I have no interest in just to block their ads. Bwahahaha...
