[SPEC] Timeline

we are starting to get a fFew dates of things. so i thought a timeline might be good. (well, i mean, tanner jotted some things down over here, fFor instance .. but that's that) fFor now, we'll just make a simple plaintext thing. it can become graphical as data emerges.

Code:

573 BC - Academy fFounded (loosely)
571 BC - Degabus of Malme's journal quote
452 BC - Naskent Taversen donates large portions of land to the Academy
443 BC - Aetiant Taversen elected fFirst Academy Master

179 BC - unknown quote, which appears in sente's letter

1 BC ?
1 AC ?

89 AC - The Sentinel was fFounded (other specific sentinel dates omitted -- they can be fFound on the "about" page)

148 AC - "I had thought" quote, by S. Marchant.

175 AC - The last criminal mistrial in the city, during gthe Ghona Hesh trial
188 AC - The last Big snow storm in march

228 AC - Cube placed on display in the academy
235 AC - previous theft attempt

267 AC - CUBE STOLEN.  fFRAN KILLED.  also, Karen Chondelle killed.

268 AC - This year.

I can't seem to fFind today's date. it is dangerous to assume they have the same calendar we do. Maybe that's what the 2210 is: the current year.

[EDIT: although, sente does use our calendar when dating postcards, and he says in his email a month ago, the cube was stolen jan-16-2004. so it's certainly possible they use the same calendar. best leave that unknown till we are sure.]

EDIT: i'll update this as needed. --Scott

If they do have a different calendar from us, also keep in mind that a "year" may be a lot shorter or longer than our year. The time passed between 228 AC and 235 AC may be very different from our notion of "7 years".

Or then again, it may not Wink

Also, perhaps we have the dates backwards - the cube was put on display -after- the attempt. Seven years should be enough to create a high security facility. They never said the attempt happened after the cube was put on display, and my general sense of numbers leads me to believe you have the two backwards.

But, then again, their calender might be counting down to something else entierly, and started at a large number. Something happening every 300 years or so? 250, maybe?

the dates and order seem pretty clear to me on the post-it note... I just think there was little or no security before the first theft attempt. A compareable incedent occured in 1991 when an "frustrated artist" attacked the statue of david with a hammer causing minor damage to the toes of the statue... the statue was removed and a replic is on display in the orginal location now to prevent further damage to the priceless work of art.

so while 7 years is enough time to build a secure facility to protect the cube they may have had it in a religous shrine under the assumption that noone would dare steal or damage it. After the first theft incident they probably secured it... but appearently not well enough.

Re: their calendar counting backwards - I'm not sure how that would be possible. Leaving aside the issue of "just how would they know which date to count to?", AC being the backwards time interval doesn't jive with Marchant's quote. If the timeline was:

AC <------*------>BC

then we'd have the "last serious attempt at theft [of the Cube]" happening way before Marchant says his thing; and - more importantly - before their "BC" starts, and goes on happily for at least 179 years (see Sente's letter with the quote from Unknown). That basically means that the last time someone attempted to steal the Cube was at least 414 Perplexian years ago. Somehow I don't think that's plausible.

I think the timeline pretty much has to be the other way around, and that thier time *now* is something at or after 235 AC.

Now, that said, I'm having trouble reconciling the "BC = Before Cube" and "AC = After Cube" spec with the most recent developments.

If the year the Cube was discovered (or, less likely, "understood") is to mark the beginning of a new era for Perplex City (and their world in general), then it must have been something that influenced their world a whole lot more than merely causing "several religious and mystical groups around Perplex City" to rever it. I mean, our calendar has a "zero year event" in it too, and if we were to try to describe the person responsible for that major, [eventually] intra-planetary change in our timeline, we would probably feel compelled to say more than "his worshipers comprise several religious and mystical groups". So, maybe the "AC" and "BC" are not "After Cube" and "Before Cube" after all Screwy . Hm, suddenly, I'm reminded of the whole "change the world business"...

And anyway, if their time went backwards, wouldn't the video too?

5am - not the time for this level of paradox...

Um, no, for several reasons.

1) The video could have been shot here, anyway.

2) I think what they're actually discussing is years being numbered backwards, just like BC years here in our world. If we had videos from BC, they would not run backwards.

3) The only other time-going-backwards theory we have is Tanner's theory about their future being our past. In that case, the video would still be forwards, it would just depict events that, to us, have not happened. Their time is forwards, our time is forwards, they're just not in agreement with eachother.

KSG - maybe, just maybe. have you not read Counter-clock World, Philip Dick's take on this very subject?

Here.... http://www.philipkdickfans.com/counter_clock.htm

Can we exclude anything at this stage? I will admit it made more sense at 5am.....

AC BC & AADAA & Dinah in the kitchen Oh My!

What about the "It all begins with AADAA . . ."

It's on the wiki AADAA page and looks like it's a dead end. But with the communication recently perhaps Dinah was real (I dunno I just got here). On first glance I would want "D" to be zero and "AA" representation of 1 unit. If Sente's numbering system is different then it doesn;t seem to efect badge numbers, they are lowercase and D & e should be adjacent one another in any key.

I think therefore I spam. (spec?)

personally i think if Dinah is a real person on saturday then they may want us to give them a code (possibly the AADAA or the 24 digit) or maybe no1 will be there and it will all be a big red herring.

you arrive at the affixed location, minutes before the time alloted. someone just had to check out the apple store, and you cant trust public transport for the life of you. standing suspiciously, underneath the abbey road camera, you spot a woman in black, she wears dark lenses and you cant make out her eyes. suppressed excitement and a muffle of: "hi, are you dinah?" follows.

"no but she left this for you..." she walks away leaving you with a mysterious envelope. you notice the academy seal in the upper right corner, and the letter addressed from a certain sente kiteway.

hastily opening it reveals what appears to be a map marked with blood. tracing your finger along, you see the trail starts at abbey road, and ends somewhere in the london sewers, beneath the natural history museum, x marks the spot, but the spot of what you wonder? on the back of the map, in greater splotches you can make out the words help me .being the adventurous sorts, you all decide to check it out, heck trawling through sewege is just like tech support or customer service, but with fewer rats and contagious diseases. before leaving, someone insists on doing the beatles pose, but before you can step onto the crossing, an unmarked car pulls up, tinted window rolls down, a figure inside it beckons you to come closer. "if you know whats good for you, stay out of our way. it is back in the possesion of its rightful owners, and your interference will not be tolerated." the figure hands you a business card. it is blank with only an emblem of cube and a number. the car screetches away, leaving you with the smell of burning rubber, and a fresh trail.... Twisted Evil

lol, either way we can watch it all unfold live on camera... Very Happy ahh the magic of the internet.
