I also emailed and the reply:

Thank you for your email Russell,

I'll admit that when I first saw the damage to my site, my immediate thought was that it was "just" hackers. However, you are very c orrect in your assesment. This may be a new sort of extension of 'automatic writing' done through the interent. Although I certainly can't say that I apreciate the damage done to my site, it is a very intriguing phenomenon.

I will certainly be keeping an eye to see if anything new changes.

Tom,

I'm not exactly sure what this if. Do you mean to tell me that the perrson hacking my site has something too do with the Rookery Towers case? I shall have to narrow my eyes and tighten my skeptics belt, at least until I find some corroborating evidence.

Of course, Ms. Hardesty did indicate that there were paranormal forces playing games with her computer. I will be most disapointted if it turns out Ms. Hardesty herself is the one playing games.

However, the information you revealed to me has been very helpful, and I have to commend you on it. I was fairly sure it was random "graffiti", and would not have thought to analyze it further. Perhaps I should have. Some "investigator's brain" I have.

I certainly hope I can count on your quick ingenuity, should any further problems arise.

At first I thought "Oh no....not another ARG with poor spelling!"

Check out the misspelled words.....

skeptics belt (this is a stretch but it should be 's)
disapointted (also a "p" missing here)

So it might read FROPT, FROSPT, or FROT depending on what you accept as legit mistakes, but looking at the bolded letters in Russell's email, I'm guessing it's supposed to say FROST as well.

Just received an email from Morgan,

Hey all,

I updated the site, unfortunately most of my works seems to have disapeared. Strange things are afoot my investigators.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
On 5/11/05 I conducted a phone interview with Ms. Hardesty. She has graciously allowed me to post the transcript.

LH: Hello?
JM: Hello Ms. Hardesty, this is Jim Morgan.
LH: Oh thank goodness. I was hoping you'd call soon.
JM: More bumps in the night?
LH: Well, I'm probably just making myself nervous.
JM: What kinds of things have been happening down there?
LH: Weird stuff. I'm not sure if I mentioned in my email, but the dishpan keeps putting itself right in the middle of the kitchen floor.
JM: Interesting. So, you'd consider the kitchen central to the activity?
LH: I don't know Mr. Morgan. Stuff happens everywhere it seems like. That hallway really creeps me out.
JM: So you said. Have you had any experiences like this before?
LH: No, nothing. I don't even believe in this sort of thing, if you'll excuse me for saying so.
JM: Natural skepticism is perfectly healthy. Few people want to live in a haunted house.
LH: Is my house really haunted, Mr. Morgan?
JM: It's a fair possibility. Also, some associates of mine think there might be more to those computer problems you've been having.
LH: My friend said I didn't have a virus but things keep happening.
JM: Some things have been happening on my site as well. Perhaps it would be a good idea if you left the computer on and see what happens.
LH: Well, I guess.
JM: Good. Now, do you have any plans for this weekend?
LH: Not, really.
JM: I think it might be a good idea for me to come up and take a look around. Photos, some EVP. Would that be alright with you?
LH: Please do.
JM: Good. Oh hey, if you get a chance before I do, why don't you go down to the library and see if you can find any more of that article I showed you.
LH: I'll see if I can do that.
JM: All right then. It was good talking with you Ms. Hardesty.
LH: You can call me Layla you know.
JM: All right then. Goodbye Layla.
LH: Bye

The letters of the words are switched, those letters are in order PN BW TR SW or the actual order they are supposed to be in is NP WB RT WS
Oh and what cipher did you use to decode those letters and numbers?

Ah yes, sorry, my brain isn't working correctly. The numbers and letters were hex, a common encoding.

*Jumps on*

Now this looks right up my alley - so what if it's on another continent? Smile

Does anyone here have gypsy blood? From what little I remember about the tarot, that layout looks like a (I lack the words here) real fortune telly type spread thing. Maybe I'm reading into it a bit much but I'm intrigued.

Hm, L33t ghosts... This could get interesting Very Happy

Actually, on another note, don't the 5s in the reply to the comment on the blog look familiar? I've been trying to do bin/ascii conversions but it's all gibberish so far. Is this worth looking into or am I barking up the wrong tree?

----Spang!----

That was the sound of my brain asploding. Nothing I do to it seems to produce anything even remotely coherent - too many non characters. Bah, I really thought I was on to something there Sad

Yea, thats what I thought it was. I was at school when I was working on that earlier, couldn't get to my converter to make sure, so I tried a web converter and I must have gotten one that wasn't working right. This sounds fun, I'll stick around and help out! Seriously, we need to keep a list of these switched around letters and their order, so when a post is up with switched around letters include that in the post, I'm beginning to think they might have some importance soon.

Well, I decided to jump in with both feet, and emailed Layla:

Quote:
Hi Layla,

A friend of mine was surfing around and found your livejournal site. He sent me the link 'cause he knows I'm interested in strange happenings.

Wow... I've never known anyone who lived in a haunted house before. Yours sure seems to fit the bill, though. Either that or someone keeps sneaking into your house to mess with your head. Not sure which would be more disturbing, actually.

Anyway, you sounded lonely because no one was commenting, so I wanted to let you know someone is reading, and I'm here if you need to talk.

Also... I didn't want to post this on your journal, but I wanted to warn you to be careful of this Morgan guy. I've heard of several cases of so-called "paranormal investigators" scamming credulous people out of a lot of money. Not that I think you're likely to be easily fooled, or that I have any reason to doubt Mr. Morgan in particular. I just think it's best to be careful. The fact that his website is suddenly being "hacked" is a little suspicious, I have to say. Could be a ploy to gain your trust... you know, showing that you're both in this together.

Take care, and good luck!

~Angela

And she replied...

Quote:
Hi Angela!

Wow, thanks for taking the time to email me. Things have been really strange lately and it's nice to hear fro m someone who cares.

Living in a haunted house isn't the best experience in my life, it really kinda freaks me out. I'm not even sure I want to believe that it IS haunted. I never believed in this sort of thing before, but when its happening to me, it's kinda of hard not to.

As for Mr. Morgan, I'm certainly very cautious of him! I know all about tarot-scams etcetera, but Mr. Morgan dosn't seem to want to charge me anything. He just wants to come to have a look at the house. Don't worry, I promise I'll have a friend over for safety when he arrives!!

Bye!!

Layla

The letters in bold spell "game."

The numbers in the source are octal - "Don't let him see it"

But whom? Richard? or either of the 2 living characters? Or... someone else?

I knew there was something to the cards Smile

Now to figure out what the numbers in that picture are - and what that other "bars" pic means.

Erhm - Does anyone think the picture might be stegged also? I'm just wary of when simple text would do people put in jpegs.
