Coralhouse Bequest Shocks Academy
By JEREMY CLARIDGE

Recently deceased Ruth Coralhouse has left a clause in her will for a PCL45 million bequest jointly to the Academy and the Centre for Reality Research. The grant comes with a specific goal -- the money must be used to develop a method for transporting physical matter between Perplex City and Earth, with the aim that her ashes be transported to Greece and scattered over the Mediterranean Ocean on Earth.

Academy representative Valerian Reynolds expressed dismay over the request. "We do of course appreciate the generosity that has led to this," she said. "But we are unsure how to proceed. The Academy does have a policy of refusing to be guided by conditions attached to gifts of money."

Coralhouse's grandson and executor of her will, J. Randal Flynn, defended his grandmother's plans. "There's been speculation they're working on this sort of matter transportation already," he said. "They surely must be, in order to return the Cube to its place in the Museum."

CRR researcher Gordon Caius expressed the same dismay as Reynolds, though for different reasons. "Who knows if this is even safe to do?" he asked. "There's a huge risk from disease and parasites on the biological level, even assuming we could open any sort of portal without some sort of physics-driven catastrophe."

Reynolds suggested that the matter may be put before a private ethics review board at the Academy. "This is some very murky water," she said, "And no sum is enough for us to mar the Academy's sterling reputation for integrity and self-sufficiency."

Coralhouse's will also specified, "Until that happy day when my remains can be sent to those fascinating lands I never could visit in my living days, I would like my ashes to be kept in a replica Grecian urn in a Greek-style temple on the Great Lawn."

Groundbreaking Earthologist Coralhouse passed away last week at the age of 108. She had been Senior Fellow of the Social Sciences department at the Academy until she stepped down in 250.

One of a few questions I'm thinking about, how are they going to scatter her ashes on Earth?

Just to be pedantic (for a change Wink ) isn't it the Med Sea?

but seriously, maybe the Academy are really opposed to it because they know they can't do transport her ashes to Earth, and they don't want to be seen to fail.

Perhaps they are embarrassed because someone has already done it by transporting the cube and they have yet (apparently) to figure out how the transportation was accomplished....

Or perhaps they already know how to do it and no one wants to admit to the fact....<cue X-files conspiracy music> Cool

BTW Do we know how big the cube is supposed to be?

Don't forget the futures too!

Quote:
The Wave (May 11 - June 10)
A Baby is about to enter your life, kicking up a tantrum and stealing away all the glory. Fret not, pet, you'll get your day in the sun before long.

The Archer (June 11 - July 10)
Oh, boo hoo. Nothing going your way? Other people may think you're working at capacity, but you and I both know you're so not. Next level, stat.

The Half-filled Jug (July 11 - August 10)
You're kinda bleh. Really, I worry. With the Maze coming your way, it's a good time to rediscover wonder. Maybe take up magic?

The Dragon (August 11 - September 10)
Humility is a desirable trait, so long as it doesn't cross over into false modesty. Remember that when you're "flirting" with some sharp about Tronten vessels at your next party.

The Three Balls (September 11 - October 10)
You, duckling, need to pay a smidge more attention to where you're going. If you keep this up, somebody will get hurt. I vote not me.

The Dice (October 11 - November 10)
Been a little too happy-go-lucky with the purse-strings, huh? You're right, it WAS that cute. It's fine, though. You'll get a chance to work it off with a windfall extra project this week.

The Maze (November 11 - December 10)
I know it seems like a string of catastrophes from this end. You'll be glad for the experience once it's done, though -- if you survive until Friday, anyway.

The Apple-Thief (December 11 - January 10)
If someone's thoughts go to your head, be careful where your mind is led.

The Hand (January 11 - February 10)
No, she did not fall for it. You're fooling yourself, hot stuff. The only worse performance in town right now is Mademoiselle Aurora Belle's notorious Carmela.

The Baby (February 11 - March 10)
Focus, focus! You're going in a thousand directions, and frankly, it's making me a little dizzy. Let's straighten out your priorities, and how.

The Eagle (March 11 - April 10)
If you want it, you've got to fight for it. You sharpen your talons and start fluffing out those feathers. I gotta tell you, though, it's going to be close. Even I don't know how this one will turn out. And I'm so me.

The Spider (April 11 - May 10)
Sssizzle! Is that a hot date you have lined up for Saturday? No need to be awkward now. The heavens say it's time for your cup to runneth over and end that dry spell of yours.

And remember, the sharpest Leck is the one you keep in your pocket.

Presuming that the academy aren't hiding the fact that they can transport matter across to here, and that the cube isn't some special case of matter transport, I guess they must be pretty eager to get the people behind this so that they can pinch their technology. That being said, I'm guessing that the latter of the two statements I ruled out is true. Guess we won't know until they finally tell us what the cube actually is.

It would be interesting to see whether they'd like to collaborate with earth scientists to solve this problem or whether they think that we're not advanced enough to be able to try.

Doesn't want much does she? With her 'Grecian urn' and her 'Greek style temple'. Who does she think she is? Wink

Anyway, it all sounds very 'parallel universy' to me. I also agree that the Acadamy is being very suspicious about it all. Sounds a bit obvious, but the people in the Acadamy had the best access to the cube and they would be in the best position to do something with it. An inside job?

Way too late to comment, but I will anyway. I had the EXACT same reaction! I was thinking, "well it sucks to be Perplex City, cuz you are NOT going to be able to fulfill THAT request. Twisted Evil

er...not so much a trout as a pair of specs, she wants a temple and an urn until such date as her money can get her ashes to Earth
