Anyone with web skillz wanna hunt a phisher?

I got a phishing email today, and I'm wondering if anyone could tell me, by looking at the email info how one could tell where the email actually originated... I am pretty sure it came from the computer sciences dept at BYU, but that also could have been "wormed"...

So my point is, if anyone wants to help me hunt this scum down, so I can get him/her arrested, I'd love it. Let me know either in this thread, or if you don't want your |-| /-\x0R skillz to be displayed publicly, PM me.

This is totally for real, and I really want to nail this guy. I hate spam. I hate phishers, and I will do anything (within the law) to show these people that they picked the wrong guy to phish today... Twisted Evil

Most of the time a phisher or spammer is going to be using an open proxy, and his own IP is not on the email. If it looks like it's originating from BYU, chances are they didn't secure one of their machines well enough. Confused

It was in the header info. It was not the "reply-to" person. I would also assume that it was an enslaved server that spit out the message, but I just figured it was interesting and if there was a group of people who could figure out who was behind it, it would be the unfiction-ites.

Well, it's possible you got a stupid phisher (and a "smart phisher" might be an oxymoron, but I digress) who didn't bother to obfuscate their originating IP. Sometimes www.spamcop.net is helpful in reading headers - might try running it through there?

Having studied in said dept at BYU, I would suggest contacting them too. They are quite careful about keeping track of who is logged into what server when, etc. etc. They are also very anti-spam phish, etc and would more than likely be very interested in helping you track down where and who this came from.

weephun, I apologize it took so long for me to respond to this, but for some reason, this thread didn't "light up" when it held new messages... oh well...

But thanks, I did in fact (same day I got the phishing email) contact the webmaster, who in turn has notified the head of those who oversee the maintenance of the technology at BYU. They were very good in getting back to me to let me know they were on the case. Cool
