The Sunday Joebrent Walking tour

Joe sent me this description of the walking tour.

Quote:
Start at Columbus Circle, walk south to Times Square. Cut right to 8th Ave, south to Madison Square Garden. Cut left to Bway, past Macy's window. South through little Korea to Flatiron Building. Continue south through Union Square. Continue south on Bway through Chinatown. Possibly stop for tea at Pearl River or dim sum on Mott Street. Continue south on Bway through downtown past ground zero, cross to middle of Brooklyn Bridge, stop for pics of skyline with the setting sun in the background. Back to Manhattan side, through downtown historical district to Staten Island ferry, ride back and forth, then 1/9 up to Times Square to see at night.

Make sure everyone wears comfortable walking shoes, and bring water if they'd rather not pay $1ish for water from hot dog vendors.

The dinner sounds cool, do we have to sign up to it or something? Also, I may be interested in taking you up on the MOMA tour depending on timing, jetlag etc etc Smile

As for our presentation, we'll provide more info soon.

Dinner

You don't have to sign up for dinner. We can increase the number as needed.

The Fabulous Jane McGonigal

Jane McGonigal will be giving a talk beginning at 2:00pm in the Madison Conference Room on the 18th floor of the Hotel Penn

Check out her website

"There Is No Such Thing as an ARG"

Quote:
I want to make the case for ARGs as a particular kind of experience, rather than a genre. The difference being that a genre formalizes structures, features, techniques, styles, and platforms, while experience can use any and all means to create a particular kind of interaction, dynamic, emotional journey, community, etc.

So things like: explosion of speculation and interpretation, the vertiginous feeling that anything could happen next, the heightened sensitivity to being contacted or needed in everyday life even when you're "away" from the game… I want to argue that the term ARG really describes an experience, rather than a particular set of design strategies, media platforms, or gameplay mechanics. And that constant replication of a core set of design strategies, platforms or mechanics absolutely kills the ARG experience. So that things that may look and feel like previous ARGs might not really create an ARG community or give its players the ARG experience.

I've been spending time in the ILB Archives reading through the "Puzzle: Axons RELATIVE", "Puzzle: Axons LITERAL", and "PUZZLE: Axons NUMERICAL" threads, and I want to share some of my thoughts about this particular moment in ARG history with the ARGfesters. To me, the kind of stuff happening during those weeks when nobody knew what the hell they were supposed to do with the GPS coordinates represents perfectly the most amazing collaborating, brainstorming, networking, creative interpretation, give-and-take, story analysis, character analysis, debate, discussion, dialogue, construction, resource pooling, humor writing, etc. that can happen in an ARG community. And the conclusion I have come to is that an ARG absolutely requires a "What the hell am I supposed to do with this?" moment.

So it can't be a GENRE, because genre is all about convention. And convention means players will develop and deploy REPEATING and known strategies, interpretations, methods, etc. To me, that's not the ARG experience that by and large has created interest in these kinds of projects. It's the "What in the world..????" moments. So, we must never be still. We must not formalize, conventionalize or cement anything. I guess that's the core of my whole avant game philosophy—always trying to stay in the moment BEFORE the game solidifies, before people know exactly what they're supposed to do and how they're supposed to do it.

Also important to me to honor the other ambitious ARGs of the year, and to address the player experience as well as the PM experience… so I would likely also discuss (favorably) my experience of that magical "What the heck are we supposed to do" moment as a Coachella 5 player of Art of the Heist. Looking back I would say that the reason we five players became the Coachella 5, that is to say the reason we were able to create a completely rewarding and binding micro-version of the ARG community, was that the Art of the Heist's live missions were dreamed up and designed and executed in precisely that "anything can happen", no conventions need apply kind of way. So even though we didn't, like, get the puzzle card out of the Audi, and therefore "failed" the mission, the event was to me a huge ARG success because it gave us a PERFECT and entirely complete "ARG experience".

So, you know, good vibes about other ARGs as well as a little ILB retrospective. J

It's a party! And a wet T-shirt contest! Check out the links in rose's sig for a bit better idea of what it's all about. AFAIK there's no age limit, but bear in mind that no one will accept responsibility for you if you are under 18, so you'll need to work something out with your parents or guardian. Wink

Grassrooots panel announced for ARGFEST!!

Due to overwhelming popular demand we are making lunch a 30 minute break- there are fast food places in abundance near the Penn - so that the following panel can be presented:

On July 23rd from 1:30-2:00pm in the Madison Conference Room on the 18th Floor at the Hotel Penn:

Metacortechs - A Large Scale Game on a Grassroots Budget

Panel: Brooke Thompson, Krystyn Wells, Sean Stacey,Steve Peters

Topic of discussion: How we did it.

Be there! We can't provide lunch at a reasonable cost at the Hotel Penn due to their Union Regulations... but if you want to bring something in for yourself and a snack and some water, you know in case you might want it later .....who are we to stop you.

FRIDAY NIGHT DINNER- PM me with name and number of people

PM me here if you are going to join us for dinner on Friday, July 22nd.

I made a reservation for 20 people for dinner on Friday night- but the restaurant will easily handle 36-40 people.

As the response to ARGFest as been enthusiastic, I need to get a better count of the number that will be here.

So if you want to join us for dinner on Friday - as shown on the schedule:

Quote:
6:30 meet in Hotel Penn Lobby near inside Coffee Shop - place with a few tables outfront

Walk to Dinner

7:00 Dinner - right now we have a reservation for 20 people but we can increase that up until the Monday before ARGFest. The place we found - through diligent effort -has good food and is inexpensive and near the Hotel.

Market Cafe
(212) 967-3892
(212) 564-7350
(212) 967-4092 (Fax)
496 9th Ave
New York, NY 10018

Thanks!! Hope to see you there!!!

PS If you aren't sure if you will be here in time, but would like to go if you can, let me know as well!!

The Art of the Heist PM Event

I wanted to give everyone a quick update on the Art of the Heist Puppetmaster Event scheduled for Saturday, July 23rd at the NYC ARG Fest.

We've secured a larger room for the entire day (Saturday) of PM and ARG fan events, so fitting everyone in who wants to attend should no longer be an issue. We even found another sponsor to help cover the additional cost of the larger room. I've also lined up a sponsor who is working on possibly providing some form of live web streaming or chat from the event, so that people who can't make it to New York for ARG Fest can still participate.

The list of Art of the Heist Puppetmasters and creative personnel who will be there includes many of the same people who were just in ARGN's post-game chat for the game, so this will be a great chance to meet those people face-to-face, follow up on your questions from the chat, and listen to the creators stories about making the Art of the Heist.

In attendance will be:

Mike Monello, Brian Cain, Brian Clark, Steve Wax, Matt Fischvogt, Gabriel Georgeian, Jim Gunshanan, and myself, Dave Szulborski. I'm still working on confirming other possible panel members, including some of the acting talent from the game.

The format will begin with brief statements and stories by the members of the panel, explaining how they were involved with the game and things that happened along the way of building and performing the Art of the Heist. After this there will be a question and answer session open to the floor until time runs out. There may even be some Last Resort Retrieval pins there to grab!

I've put an informational page about the event up on my personal website which you can see here.

The Art of the Game event will be held on Saturday, July 23rd from 11 am to 1 pm at the Hotel Penn. I hope to see you all there.
