Mini Cooper Viral Campaign

I just saw a commercial on tv that I know is the start of a viral ad campaign. The commercial was warning people to make sure that they were not buying counterfeit Mini Coopers, most of which looked like old junkers with Union Jacks painted on the roof. Anyways, the commercial gave the URL www.counterfeitmini.org. The site is supposedly for an organization called the Counter Counterfeit Commission whose sole goal is to halt the sales of counterfeit Mini Coopers Rolling Eyes It is a fairly amusing site though, especiall some of the pictures of counterfeits.

There also seems to be another site in this campaign. There's a warning on the site that says not to buy anything from mini4auction.com. This site is supposedly selling some of the counterfeit Minis.

These really are quite amusing, especially since the REAL Mini-Cooper S always looks like a fake to me when compared with the ORIGINAL. It's two feet longer, for heaven's sake - that's massive! It's wider and higher to match, including 17 inch wheels, which are nearly double the size of the old mini.

I dare say it's OK as a car, but it's absolutely HUGE!

I investigated this a little earlier today. The voicemail message at the listed phone number is kind of interesting.

Anyways, i just got a game related email.

Quote:
Dear Good Citizen,

Recently you visited MINI4auction.com and requested to be notified of any upcoming auctions. Unfortunately, we at the Counter Counterfeit Commission have some bad news for you. The auction on MINI4auction.com are almost entirely made up of counterfeit MINI Coopers. This may be hard to believe based on the photos, but it's true. They're fakes.

MINI4auction was trying to send you an email to notify you of an upcoming auction. Luckily, our Tech Ops department was able to intercept it in time. We don't even want to think about what might have happened otherwise.

Rest assured, you're safe now. To learn more about motoring fraud and to protect yourself from counterfeit MINI Coopers, visit counterfeitmini.org

Stay genuine.

Sincerely,

Matt Bonin
Director
Counter Counterfeit Commission

I feel there is more to this, but I haven't had any luck finding anything hidden in either of the sites. The above email also appears to be lacking in anything that would advance the game.

I'd just forget about this except the CCC is coming across as EXTREMELY high-tech. If you try to sell a Mini on the auction site you get a popup from the CCC that says they are monitoring you. And the above email mentions that they intercepted the email from mini4auctions. In reality, of course, it would take an hugely powerful organization to be able to do those types of things, something that would seem to be beyond a typical consumer protection group.

Yeah, I got all of the same stuff that you got. I just got the e-mail, and yesterday I got the popup on the mini4auction site. As far as possible next steps go, there's an address in the image at the top of that e-mail, and there's also a phone number on the CCC site. There could be some of that stuff at mini4auction, but I haven't looked it over too thoroughly.

edit: corrected my atrocious spelling mistake and typos.

The two motorcycles duct-taped together! What a hoot!

They did an internet game for the original minicooper launch in the US (should be somewhere in the archives here, I think), so it wouldn't surprise me if this were to lead somewhere fun and interesting.

That was the Z4 I think.
Driver was the name of the "game"

Mini has a great, great ad agency.
Their ad inserts are just...great.

This should be fun.

Message on voicemail:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Hey you've reached the counter counterfeit commission. This is Manny. I'm gonna be out until the end of the month doing some deep undercover work. But if this is an emergency you can reach me in Brazil in the Copacabana area. I'll be working under the code name "Bosco." Oh, and if you are calling about counterfeit watches please call Cheryl."

Johnny, there was ALSO a BMW Z4 game. End game was in Las Vegas, reported on by vpisteve and konamouse.

The minicooper game involved some private eye-ish back story and applications to get a trip to Spain where some kind of scavenger hunt was put on for competing teams in a major city. To win a car. /me did not get an invitation to the final. Sad

EDIT: I see they (BMW/minicooper) ran yet another promotion a year ago - "Men of Metal" - but a search does not pop the older campaign I refer to above.

Damn them! I want one of the fake minis!

I really want a car that good for, say, 3,000.

Sad

That car exploding
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
before it hits the wall
is probably one of the funniest things I've ever seen in advertising... I have no interest in a Mini, but I would vote them funniest car company, if there was ever some strange reason for me to do so! Laughing

"If that driver's having fun...he's faking it."
"Hey, if you want to go off road, buy an SUV."

What a brilliant campaign.
