Personally, from a business aspect, Sony has two hurdles to overcome, in the cell and the blu-ray format.

Sony has sunk so much time and money into both that if they don't get picked up as major aspects of computing and data storage(respectively), then it's entirely possible Sony won't be able to afford a PS4, no matter how successful this one is.

Personally, what IS coming out for PS3 that looks good? It's nothing but demos. At least the 360 had some actual game footage(though to be fair, it's actually launching sooner). I can see this race being MUCH closer, since Sony's selling point last time was DVD playback, and that's no longer a big deal. Microsoft has some damn good 3rd parties lined up, and that was the PS3's major selling point. Plus, with it's radically different architecture, I can't imagine it being particularly easy to program for, so initial software will probably trickle out.

On an unrelated note, I saw more DS shelf space in Japan than PSP, but I saw a hell of a lot more people playing with cell phones than either.

Interesting post at Penny-Arcade today. Points out that Sony's aversion to MP3's and other non-proprietary standards is quickly killing things like walkman sales (and the huge mp3 player market Sony hasn't tapped). As a consumer, it does feel good to see companies get punched in the groin for failing to operate in our own best interests.

I can't believe it, but today I realized that I might actually buy a 360 in November. My wife will let me because it will act as a user-friendly bridge from our PC media to the living room. I will want it for the upgraded, actually thought-out Live! service. Halo doesn't hurt either. Hmm...

A brief article about how Apple seems not impressed with Cell performance ... They also mentioned that Apple might compete on the multimedia center market, so that may be the reason why. It's still interesting that Apple is going Intel on their Mac line, instead of remaining with PCP or going Cell.

Anyone have any experience with Sony'sd online experience? Any news on PS3's online services? I think MS totally outshines Sony in this dept.

It actually says Jobs was unimpressed. As someone who swims in Apple rumors lets just say that Steve makes decisions for personal reasons, and not liking the chip that IMB abandoned Apple's processors to make isn't surprising. I'm not saying it's a good chip, but there is alternate causality out there.
