Someone in the chat's probably got this already, but I can't get in there, so.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Look at the letters with dots, count up the dots, put the letters in numerical order and it'll spell out 'fromschool'. I can't tell where it goes from there.

What's worse is this is not a simple code.

I see both

A, B, P, T and Z as single capital words. And there's only so many of those, we have too many.

Best guess is that each paragraph needs translating separately.

I really wish I could get on chat.

It's a Vignere, with the key as thevampirelestat. I'll post the whole text as soon as I've got it all translated.

Edit: Here it is:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
father has allowed richard home from school for christmas this year. it's been nearly four years since i've seen him. four years since i've seen my own brother and twin. surely that must constitute some grave crime! i won't deny that things have been peaceful here without my brother. though not so much peaceful as… silent. waiting.

the tall man i've seen over the years stalking and muttering to himself at odd hours. knocking things over at intermittence. he wants my brother back; that much is obvious. it's the why i haven't yet been able to discern. that's why i've been studying. since that night in the graveyard i've been a servant of occult knowledge. my father thinks i've taken a fancy to the unholy, and yet it is the unholy i learn to battle, though all my papers seem of little use in the daylight. chalk circles and nonsense and wood spirits? its quite pagan.

but, even though it may herald disaster, i am glad to be reunited with richard. i must say he looks the perfect gentleman scoundrel now, in his school uniform, with his look of superior satisfaction. he's let his hair grow long; it surprised me. keeps it all tied back with a leather thong. a leather thong! well, leastways it isn't a silver ribbon.
we had a talk last night, long past when mom and dad would have allowed, given it's our sixteenth year. i wasn't surprised again when richard snuck into my bedroom like it was the old days (granted it was a sight later!) but i was surprised he'd brought with him a bottle of wine ferreted from dad's own cellar. i refused to touch it myself, right at first. but it's always been so very hard to say no to richard.

and so, after a long conversation, i ended up asleep at the foot of my own bed once again with richard thieving all the nicest pillows for himself! i'll dare to say dad was put-out to see richard's bed unslept. he'd have laid into richard too, if you didn't account for mother being there, and it being christmas and all. well, in a few days, that is. tonight's only the twenty-first

Yeah, as soon as I actually started looking into it, I realised it was probably a Vin-code.

However, I've got no way of translating a vin-code easily.... is there a website you can do it on or something?

So... that I can actually decode some of these things occassionally?

Obes.

EDIT - Can't see anything in that paragraph pointing towards the next puzzle. Tried all the 21... dec.. 21dec, dec21, 22, dec22, 22dec, christmas (basically the obvious ones). Now I'm stuck.

There are a lot of useful tools here:

Here is the Vignere code-breaker I used:

Good job, guys! I hate that I can't go online at all at work, but oh well. What can ya do?

Anyway, does anyone get the significance of the "silver ribbon" bit? How Eric's glad it's a leather thong instead of a silver ribbon? It just seemed random to me, and maybe I'm forgetting something. *shrugs*

... maybe he's homophobic? Laughing No, I think that he's just suprised that Richard has changed so much... I mean, how would it be if you hadn't seen your brother, your twin, your... reflection, shall wel say (bringing in what the Tall Man said, over here)... almost your other self, sent away when you were 12, and now, four years later, he's back... Changed. Your last memories of him (ie the most recent ones) are from when you were a kid. Now you're both teenagers (*gasp* Rolling Eyes yeesh), and... Wow, he grew his hair out, and he's all in his uniform... He looks so different... and you aren't used to it yet. Maybe you don't like change. Well, at least it isn't a shiny bow in his hair. Wink Yeah, I just thought of it as a sorta offhand comment. But who knows, maybe it is important after all.

Well silver is the awareness ribbon for being anti-elder abuse and for a cure for Parkinson's disease. Maybe Eric likes beating up old people with Parkinson's...

Okay not really, but I didn't see any real relevance of silver ribbons in the global sense so either A) it's like Mossy said, and just shows that Richard has changed but thankfully not TOO much or B) it's nothing at all. Or C) it's a key element that will solve this entire mystery in one fell swoop!

Note - this is 1896 we're talking about.

I believe a leather thong was considered an 'old style' about then (What is it... end of Edwardian time?) But men would still have pony tails.

His reference to 'at least it's not a silver ribbon' would be replaced by the modern phrase 'You've got girl's hair' or even 'your hair looks like a horses bum' (If you watch TV.. and like Hovis).
