The Final Countdown

The countdown begins. 27th June is fast approaching.

So with 2 weeks left to go until our unsuccessful end, I thought we should let "anyone out there" know what we thought of the game.

My personal opinion is that this was a great premise to begin with, however, it wasn't very well paced. I understand that to appeal to a mainstream audience it may need a slower pace than other ARGs (although there are ways to make this up to the hardcore audience that you may attract), but this game often became stagnant and with such large gaps in between updates, it was hard to tell that this was still going on at times.

When it got going, it was fun and the story had great potential, but I think it was a lost opportunity to really make something of it and get some excitement and media attention around Stella.

The final puzzle, well we've all pulled our hair out on that, and while it was obviously meant to be hard, it was just downright frustrating, and it appears we've been left to our own devices to figure it out. Perhaps some of what we have found were clues, but without any consistent updating, who knows!

Or perhaps we'll be kicking ourselves at ignoring the blatantly obvious that's been staring us in the face Wink

All I want to know now is when my contract for a magical trip to the UK will be accepted. Obviously the devil just can't keep up with demand these days. Very Happy

Tick tock tick tock (if the final solution is not revealed, I may visit Stella headquarters myself, drinking ... *shock* another brand of lager, now that'd show them!)

Your post makes me feel a tad maudlin... is it really all coming to an end

...been out of it for ages (some personal crises and PC glitches) and popped back in to see if Jon had somehow managed to have been saved and the book of star decoded, but nothing much seems to have happened

i haven't read up on all the posts so am not up to par with everything but do agree with you that the long lapses in game can contribute to boredom...

but out of the boredom has come some good banter which I will have to take time to catch up on - i think the people who play the games make the games rather than the PM's - they just sketch the outlines - the gameplayers make them live - not much point having games if no-one plays them

oh noo getting serious, and i never even got decorated with me pink ribbony thingies

anyway Wishi, if it all comes to a sudden grinding halt and S&S wipe all evidence of their contract off the face of cyberspace... nice knowin' yer and yer weren't a bad "Mod"... a bit tetchy now and then but every good society needs its bosses to keep order....

grovel.... etc etc (can one get decorated without doing loadsa posts?)

I'm actually a bit sad.

I've been here from it's birth, to it's croaky, non-existent death.

I remember waking up early for a 'phone call', talking to psychic palm readers about alephs and drinking stupid amounts of stella (priced at £13.66 for 10 cans), texting six random phone numbers and waking gamers up at 4 in the morning.....ah, those were the days

it's such a shame the game fizzled out...

i really hope though that we get to know what the answer actually was... i for one can't face looking at those six symbols anymore... too many sleepless nights!

So, PM's ..... it was great at the beginning, but I think we drifted apart! A bit like a relationship, I feel like you don't care about me anymore!

Wishi, I suppose you did ok. cheers for clearing out the trolls.

Hehe, well that's all the "good" comments I need Wink I remember back in the beginning too, having stuff to do and speak of, 'twas good!

I hope everyone who played will stick around in the community anyway!

When I found Sable and Shuck up for an award and decided to investigate further I had no idea what I was letting myself in for! It's been fun, it's been frustrating (thanks for that 4am text message, Meak! Rolling Eyes ), there's been a bit too much sitting around but it'll be sad to wave byebye to the man in black and Brigid. Let's hope the PMs decide to end things with a bang. Whoever ends up with the prize...well, you deserve it for persevering!

S&S introduced me to ARGing in general, as I think it did a lot of people, so thanks guys for tolerating myself and the other noobs as we ploughed our way through. If or one will be sticking around...currently over in unholy movie waiting for orders from martha. Very Happy

And let's not rule out a last-minute flurry of clues....surely that ten grand is burning a hole in their pockets...

Endgame

The game was incredible before the endgame. It was fun and engaging. Great concept. (Though i love anything with the devil)

Obscure clues, and i believe i learned something.

The endgame.... was lame. Who knows if any of the clues we seemed to get meant anything. No clarity. and over 20billion brute force possibilities. We had so much information on the puzzle that just never panned out. And lots of clues that... we just couldnt confirm.

All i can say, God i hope they explain how we were supossed to do this.

And on a bright note. Although unlikely, Perhaps this is the end of Brigids annoying and pointless contest and the beginning of the second half where we find Jon isnt dead and there is more to this for us to figure out.

Cross our fingers for a conclusion thats so much better than this miserable ending where no one wins. ... (17 butterfly, and thats it?!?!!?!?)
2 out of 3 aint bad. 1 out of 6... is horrible. [/b]

Aye, I'll be glad to see it go myself. I can finally stop checking back here to see if anyone 'got it' yet.

I've been following it since the beginning, and oh my god was I excited about it. But sadly, it's obviously been made by marketing people rather than gaming people and ultimately that has been its downfall. But damn did they employ a proper puzzle-crafter for that end one! I can't believe there weren't more clues somewhere for us to follow, rather than just the random inputting of combinations and numbers that we all spent hours inputting.

SO, good work for the concept guys, the storyline was excellent, the implementation was just too slow.

Perhaps I'll be reaching for a Kronie from now on though ; )

Yeah, pretty much agree with everything said so far.

I didn't start the game right at the very beginning and only joined a good few weeks into the game but I have to say I've enjoyed playing it, if not a little frustrated with the end game, not the actual end puzzle itself but the lack of any clear cut info and clues to actually solve it. It just seems like they gave up on updating it. Incredible how that flyer came to light though, the only clue we ever got to solving the end game.

Not a bad game for my first ARG, it managed to capture my attention for some time but in the end I got lost in doing other things and as the momentum of the game dwindled so did my interest.

It was a good idea with all the txt msgs and video msgs and stuff, the game seems well thought out and I think they've done a great job but I think that there wasn't enough happening in the storyline to warrant such a long time period over which the game was played out and it ended up that the sub puzzles where solved fairly quickly leading to the drawn out pauses between any updates.

Saying that I did find myself examining the packaging on a crate of Stella in the supermarket last night in the hope of finding anything Very Happy
It certainly hasn't made me go out and buy a crate though, I prefer 1664 myself. Laughing

I'll definitely be looking to play other ARG's in the future though.
It's been great being part of it and talking to you all as well.

This has been my first ARG as well, and I agree with the comments posted above about the great concept and rubbish pacing.

I found it all utterly brilliant for the first few steps through the game. It's now become just a frustrating pain in the rear end.

I really hope there is some closure to this on June 27th. The absence of any content for so long makes it seem only a 50/50 chance that we'll ever hear from Stella about this again.

Or maybe they'll prove us wrong and provide an exciting ending to the game. I certainly hope so.

Farewell.

Yup. Great beginning, and some great hits in the middle, ending up with a fizzle.

Kept me and a few others here in the states quite intrigued, even though we knew we weren't eligible to win.

A couple of bars around here picked up stella over the course of the ARG, and it lent a new wrinkle into beer drinking to know who made it, when it started, what stella artois sorta means, and all that. Unfortunately, as of late the beer's acquired something of a bitter aftertaste.

Oh yeah.. KUDOS to all who contributed answers!! I was amazed any number of times by people who discovered answers I never would have dreamt of.

Well met all, and carry on.

-D

I know i havent posted in a month or two, but I feel sad that in 8 days it is all over. The cynic in me still thinks maybe there is no real prize, and stella will just say they gave it to some random.

But if they do that, we'll know. Surely the winner must have to be a person who uses these boards? I still dont get how they determine who was closer with so many god damned variables...
There is no way we came too close really is there, what with there being umpteen quadrillion combinations!

Agreed

Well, as many of you have said, this was my first ARG as well, and catching up was great! Then after Halloween, things started to seem like more of a waiting game which was kinds a bummer. Now getting to the end I'm wondering if we will even know the answers we were looking for.

Thanks for all the help everyone, I'll be checking back over the next few days. Anyone got a suggestion on what ARG to try now?

Later,

Tev

Also for me it was my first ARG and I was very fascinated by the interaction of the hiding room, the marvelous desing of the websites, and the wit of the PM's (and the planning that it should have taken) to include some real-life websites.
I particularly liked the story concept and learned a lot about Faust (and by-the-way also on the Isle of Man).

Later on I lost interest by the slow pace, and the end-game was really annoying.

Let's hope that we soon do not see the end of the game, but the start of Episode II: how Jon escapes from the MiB, together with Brigid, that they are haunted all over the world, interacting with the players for finding safe harbours, and that in the end they lure the MiB into a trap, get married, an live happily after all (of course with a load of cash that they found in the premises of Sable&Shuck).

Wouldn't that be nice...?
