First: Nice work.

Second: To get the long diagonals, wouldn't you have to wrap the text to avoid a diamond pattern? If that's the case, wouldn't the word appear in one or more of the other diagonal planes in a diagonal direction?

Just trying to visualize.

Virgil's new rant..

virgil wrote:

They think they are smart enough to skip by the real work, and tend to be less than forthcoming about their shortcuts.

Back to the drawing board?

Okay so we did solve it, but xnbomb used a "shortcut" which lead to the answer.. even the directions we got didn't directly lead there.. so maybe there's something else we need to do? argh..

I would think that we need to solve all 20 faces first.
Maybe the repeated words stack up to reveal answers?

Here is an Excel (tm) spreadsheet to help us coordinate these.

Interesting that virgil used the word 'forthcoming' there..

xls file

thanks for making this j5 : I plan to work on these on my weekend trip

Obviously, no one wants me to circle these words or cross them out by hand, so tell me what convention do you want to use to indicate the words that we find?

Ok: I see the yellow highlighting...
What about where words intersect or overlap?

Ophida is a word?

Edit: I did some of the first few pages as an example. I couldn't find all the words that jamesi found. I used lighter yellow where the words run into each other to make it easier, does this work?

Thanks for kicking this off rose.

Ophida:
Members of the Class Reptilia: Order Ophida (such as, but not limited to, racers, boas, water snakes and pythons) over eight feet in length.
(thank you Sable and Shuck for the vocabulary expansion Smile ) ARGs am educational
I'd imagine that goes with the ouroboros theme.

Looks like I can't spell, please disregard. The highlighted word is "oHphida" which is nothing.

A good cutoff for minimum word length is 4 letters to start. Maybe expand it to fewer if needed later or highlight shorter words in a different color?

I didn't even think about direction changes in the search. Is that something we should look out for?

A different color for overlap is a good idea, though I'd consider only the longer word for a linear overlap.

you know what else is interesting? that he also uses the words 'the future' because that was the page we got to after 'forthcoming'.... I think that this puzzle lies sole-ly on this rant perhaps...

Hello,
I'm trying to work on this puzzle, too.
First, a question: how should we coordinate?
should certain people "reserve" certain faces (1-20) so that we don't duplicate work? And when one person declares a (reserved) face finished, other people can "reserve" it to see if they can find yet more words?

I quite agree that the repetitive words might hold a clue.

Also, there are certain words that are out of the ordinary, for example city names like Kiel (which is, like Emden wher Gunter was "arrested", a city with a harbour in the north of Germany or Rome (both on face 9) with its museums etc.
Both Kiel/Germany and Rome/Italy fit into the storyline so far as I've understood it yet (still new and catching up Wink ) and both names are on the same face, so there might be something to it.

Also, should we mark trademarks as words (but if yes, in a different colour? ). For example "Vecro" and "Retol" on face 9)

Another odd word I noticed, this time on face 10: the painter "Vermeer" which fits into the art thief storyline, too!
Also, it would be interesting to see if especially long words (let's say longer than 7 or 8 letters) hold certain clues.
I think yes. For example, on face 11 we have defalcation and destruction, which would fit into the story well enough, and, a clue, bamboozlement, which might indicate that the faces have to be rearranged/wrapped around etc., as it was done in the solution to find "forthcoming" if I understood this correctly.
So, the term "bamboozlement" definitely seems to point in that direction,
http://www.cut-the-knot.com/Curriculum/Geometry/FibonacciBamboozlement.shtml
The term "bamboozlement" for this kind of rearrangement of puzzle pieces was coined by Greg Frederickson.
Or, bamboozlement might simply have been used in its "normal" sense, trick, hoax, swindle etc. which would fit into the storyline of thieves.
But I found it odd to find the reference to rearrangement of pieces when considering how the word "forthcoming" was discovered if I understood it correctly.
Finally, a small tidbit of information on the origin of the "fat lady singing" that Virgil mentions:
http://www.infoplease.com/askeds/4-24-01askeds.html
But it might just have been used as a proverb to indicate that it isn't over yet without special reference to where the proverb came from, but who knows ...
