It's interesting that you posted that.

I noted some time ago that many of the longer words in the cube also appear somewhere on Virgil's website. Many are quite unique - my favorite is "steel diaper" for some reason.

It had occured to me that the cube might contain the answer to the $10k question - who owed the House of Doom? The reward amount seemed odd for someone as self-aggrandizing (to use a Virgil word) as Virgil, but maybe well in the range of a grand-prize for a marketing campaign.

So I set out to find all of the words in the cube. Since the cube data has already been OCR-ed (thanks xnbomb!), it was a simple matter to read it in and generate, for every character in the cube, all of the strings which result from a constant stepping vector.

For clarity, here's what I mean. Imagine the 20 sets of 20-by-20 characters as a set of 20 pages stacked on a table. Let's call the upper left corner of the top sheet (0,0,0), and the lower right corner of the bottom sheet (19,19,19). The top row of the top sheet would be a captured with a constant stepping vector or (1,0,0) - in other words, find the next character by adding 1 to the current row index, and 0 to the other two indices. Similarly, a column would be captured by (0,1,0), and the string found by going straight down through the pages would be captured by (0,0,1).

The key is to remember to wrap the resulting coordinates back into the range 0-19. In effect, this is no different that what we do when moving around a circle. If I move clockwise 20 degrees from 350 degrees, I end up at 10 degrees, not 370. Also, you can capture strings backwards, either by using negative values, or by using the complimentary values. That is, the stepping vector (-1,-1,-1) is the same as (19,19,19) when you take wrapping into account.

These vectors can be combined in various ways to move diagonally in a plane, or across planes: (1,1,0), (0,1,1), (1,0,1), and (1,1,1). Also, in theory at least, there is no reason to limit oneself to unit vectors. There are actually 8000 unique stepping vectors possible, from (0,0,0) to (19,19,19). Of course, some of these are degenerate: for example, (0,0,0) just collects the same character over and over, while (10,0,0) merely collects the same two characters over and over.

In any case, I generated them all, except for (0,0,0). 7999 vectors for each of 8000 points is 63,992,000 candidate strings. I'd post the resulting file, but it was 2,879,640,000 bytes long (more than half due to extra text).

To process that, I created a program to lookup each string, starting from the left character, against a dictionary. I used two dictionaries. The first was simply the set of words posted on Virgil's website. At first, I left out the rants, figuring that they were "improv" material, and probably ilrelevant. However, once I noticed "muskrat", a word only found in the rants, I figured I needed to add those too.


Incidently, I may not have done this perfectly. I didn't take the page apart to build my list. Instead, I "cut" all the text that I could find, pasted it all into a test file, stripped out all punctuation, then sorted and "uniq"-ed the result. I may have missed some text, in other words, or made some other mistake.

The second dictionary was a combination of a list of general words that I found on the net - I don't remember were - combined with the contents of Virgil's dictionary. My idea was to see if Virgil used some words in the cube that he didn't use on the website.

Considering all possible stepping vectors, he most certainly did. I found a total of 5648 unique 5-char-or-longer words in the cube. Virgil only used about 667 of them in his website. That's pretty discouraging. Considering only the "unit" stepping vectors, the problem is a little easier. There I found a handful of cases where Virgil used longer words in the cube than on his website. These are:

Frankly, I don't know what to make of any of this. Maybe this cow has been milked dry. Certainly I think I'm done.

I'd upload all of the raw data for ya'll, but as I said it's way too big. So instead, I'll give you some intermediate stuff.

DictFilt.zip contains the 5+ character words I found for every stepping vector using each dictionary, as well as the two dictionary files themselves.

Work.zip contains reduced lists of all the 5+ character words found using each dictionary, the 5+ character words (and where they were found) for "small" stepping vectors, and a list of the 5+ character words on any vector which was not used by Virgil's website.

What you do with this, I don't know. Maybe you analyze the way words are distributed across the cube. Maybe you identify the letters that don't belong to any word, and do something with them. Maybe you unlock the secret of the House of Doom (if so, I want a cut). Probably xnbomb has already done what was supposed to be done, and the puppetmasters are merely trying to get more out of their hard work. Whatever you do, best of luck.

One last thing: having spend time reading all of Virgil's site again, I have to say that he is an almost pitch-perfect version of a certain type of geek. Self-aggrandizing, yes, but unknowingly pathetic too. And not just any such geek, but a one of a certain age - a little slower, a little less sure of himself and his abilities.

The performance is dark, though. The bio reads more like a confessional than one would expect. His word choices, even "dating" back to his games, are generally depressed and sad... and of course he chose to put them in his cube. Some of his violent and depressed word choices come from his work, but "heartache", "internal bleeding", "brain scan". Is he dying? Certainly he's obsessed with Nisha, but he uses names of painting styles in his cube too - expressionism, impressionism, even cubism on one of the larger step vectors, I believe. Is he the brains behind this case? Certainly, he's fascinated with puzzles (he blames his mother). Is that why all the info is password protected *and* "puzzle protected"? And he's the only one who would put Ian's name on that lease. If it is Ian, why use your real name? Why help decode it? If it was Gunther or any other standard crook, why involve Ian and risk getting Nisha on your trail? She doesn't investigate all art thefts, does she? Only Virgil has a motive to put Ian's name on the lease, and get that lease into Nisha's hands. He wants to drive a wedge between them.

I believe you can find "barometric" starting at ( 9,17,17) and proceeding along ( 1, 0, 0), using the coordinate system that I described above.

Interestingly, at least to me, is that you can also find lease at both
( 6,14,11) ( 1, 0, 0) and at ( 8, 5,17) ( 1, 1, 0). And I forgot to mention "pointillism" and "surrealism" last message. There's also "hyacinth" (the name of a character in one of his games) and some other flora-related words. Villian, villian, villian!

helper, you did an amazing job! I think whatever solve is left will be found using your data.

I still think that we need to solve this by crossing out all the used letters and seeing what remains.. otherwise you have some very good ideas in there.

Why don't you at least register so you can upload your data (and we can know who to thank). Anyway, if you do register it's not a commitment to play, but it makes it easier to come back every once in a while (and perhaps to PM you when we need uber programming tasks which we are too lazy to do Wink)

Now I need one more thing from you to save us the hassle of doing it by hand. Can you have your program highlight the found words by changing the letter case. If you can start with capital letters and change every word found to small letters, I think we might find something in the remaining capital letters. We can also plug it into our 20 page excel sheet and use conditional highlighting to make life easier.

The dark ambience of this puzzle certainly resemble a "House of Doom". As for names, well, apart from references to ingame characters (Arnold Michelson, Benito Strawson, Nisha, Naoko) there are also several strings that might be names, doing a Google search on the possible first name and last name, such as "Grace Klunk", "Garesu Maizu" (I like that one, because of the Japanese aspect  ). And if any clues hidden in the sheets of data reveal yet more names, one would be spoilt for choice Wink
But who knows …

Yes, the rants definitely seem relevant, I'm in the process of compiling a list of keywords, that are unique on the VKOC site, appear only in the rants (they have the advantage of being dated, so that they might be used to order sheet/letters etc.)
I've got one wild theory, but if we manage to identify one rant keyword on each sheet, then one might be able to rearrange the sheets by date and start the dictionary attack all over again, this time with the sheets in a different order and possibly revealing yet more interesting phrases/keywords (as the "otherdirectionsexist", "aftersixthebeginning" etc. xnbomb and you discovered).
Or to rearrange the "most frequent words" we discovered on the sheets, "time", "able" etc.

Did you copy each HTML page into a file, uniq-ed this file/HTML page, then copied all the "individually uniq-ed" files into one big file and uniq-ed again?
If that's the case, it might be interesting to see what a search with a dictionary that contains only words that are unique on an HTML page basis (i.e., might appear multiple times on one single HTML page, but on no other pages) would yield. It would be a subset of your results (if I understood your approach correctly) but would focus on words that appear only on one of Virgil's HTML pages which would make them very special.
But this might be too much of a hassle if you don't have the raw data anymore/if the pages have to be copied, uniq-ed again etc.
But do you have a separate file/dictionary containing only the words from Virgil's rants?
If yes, I would be very interested in a list of the words that appear both in the rants and on the sheets. This might be a more "manageable" subset of data and would help crosscheck the results we get by manually searching for keywords appearing on sheets and in the rants!

Thanks for the good wishes and all the help! Yes, the puppetmasters might be simply playing for time with the "fat lady singing" (= it ain't finished till it's done) rant, implying that we/xnbomb arrived at the "forthcoming" keyword way too fast and by a "shortcut", that there are more clues hidden. But on the other hand, the sheets contain definitely some other odd things, like the repetitive 4/3-letters words, the keywords from rants etc. , so there might be indeed more to the puzzle than simply the "forthcoming" keyword, possibly either the login name and password or some "House of Doom" reference, together with a real, not fictitious reward, who knows.

Yes, it does, and we've discussed it here, the "chaulk_outline.jpg" picture and other details which make it even possible that Virgil is a murderer, and there are lots of sinister and depressing words in the cube, indeed, "I player killer" to name just one peculiar, or the "lost insincerity" that might also simply read "lost in sin", as somebody mentioned Wink
And many more single, sinister or depressing words.

Thank you so much for your help, and as I wrote above, a wordlist containing words that appear on the cube and in the rants (other places on the web page might, for now and current research not be so interesting, thus a restriction of the dictionary to words in the rants) would be really, really great, if it is feasible.
Another question: key phrases such as "otherdirectionsexist", "atsixthebeginning" or "newconceptualization" all start on sheet 0 (in your nomenclature) and use a stepping vector of (0,0,1), i.e. "drill down through the sheets", so to speak.
I've especially noted that "otherdirectionsexist" and "atsixthebeginning" start at (17,17,0) and (3,3,0), i.e. on the long main diagonals (and, if you realize that 17 encodes sheet no 18, if you start with one, which is half of 36, a number so frequently appearing in our riddles, this is even more interesting).
So, a textfile of 400 lines, containing all the strings starting on sheet 0 with a stepping vector of (0,0,1), i.e. "drilling straight down through the sheets" would be really, really appreciated!

Thanks helper... I am glad that we all now finally agree that the words come from Virgil's site! I have been urging that approach from the beginning. I am really glad as well that we are understanding how important Virgil's site is to this game. Maybe Virgil's fan club will grow?

I know the site is dark and depressed, but, what do you expect? Assuming the story he is telling is "real" not just something he fabricated for purposes of his game -- and, given the game world references to Emile and his quasi- absence from the gaming industry which seem verifiable in game, I do think his story is real -- he has been in a deep unmitigated depression--deep enough that he gave up his work-- since the tragic loss of his wife 12 years ago. (unless he became a master art thief instead, which is some of the spec around here.)

About the House Of Doom - I have wondered about that too, he says he no longer remebers the answer to that game. But, I don't believe that claim. Even if he doesn't remember it, he could find it easily enough. It would be nice to win $10,000 but let me stress I am not advocating that will be an outcome of this game.

One more thing, it is really great to have your post! Welcome. Please continue to share your insights! And, please don't be afraid to register, we are all mostly supposed to be doing something else. Yet here we are.

Or maybe you are worried about posts being traced from here back to you by your job or something like that? But how would registering make that any different?

I hope you decide to find a way to keep posting. My firm belief is: the more players we have -> the more unique and diverse insights we have -> the better we are at playing these games, and -> crucially, the stronger our community becomes.

Thanks for the deconstruct helper. It will be a big help.

One thing I noticed with this, is that we can't take the word list as given since many of the words are parts of phrases and should be taken in context (e.g. firstlanparty, firstpersonshooter) and some were missed (e.g. encryption, cryptogtraph. wireframe)

Just for the hell of it, I'm doing Image_43 (excel #18 ) (starts with DPGI) the letter-by-letter, old-fashioned way. So far it looks like there are a lot less three and four letter words and more x,z,j, etc. filler letters than the excel #9 I did, which I'm sure has no relevance but does make it go more quickly.

By the way, I'm completely in awe of the work people are doing to solve this. Very exciting to see.

edit: okay, take it back about less 3-4 letter words. Attached is what I got.
The frequent word seems to be open.
Also pen, but because of the frequency of o, oo, ooo, p, e - I think it may be an artifact of puzzle creation.

I didn't mean to be all mysterious about the registering thing. My main concern was that if I register, I'm likely to participate rather than just lurk. Oh well, so much for that attempt at self-restraint. I'll have have to use mental judo to keep this in bounds.

Ehsan: I think I can do as you ask. Read "AboutRedraw.txt" in Redraw.zip, then import the csv files.

Or read "AboutCubeView.txt" in CubeView.zip. It will let you rotate cubes and poke around. Unfortunately, it doesn't do diagonal views...

I think the biggest weakness so far is the dictionary used. To address that, I've attached GenerateCandidates.zip and DictFilt.zip. If you want, use one or both of the programs in GenerateCandidates to generate all the candidate strings in the cube (read the "AboutGenerators.txt" in the zip), then filter the results using your own dictionary using DictFilt.exe (see "AboutDictFilt.txt" in the zip).

I don't promise anything about these programs. I put them together for myself, and haven't tested them very much. They are also a bit hard to use, and I may have left some necessary ingredients out. I tried to tweak them toward usefulness today, so I may even have broken things that were working! I can't promise to fix or explain anything either - time constraints and other obligations, you understand. That said, if you want to give them a try, please do. But read the "About...txt" files first! These all run (or at least used to) under Windows XP. Also, DictFilt may require a lot of RAM - it reads the whole dictionary file into memory.

I also tossed together some word lists that I generated before, for what they are worth. See SomeWordLists.zip. Hopefully the filenames are enough documentation.

Now some specific responses:

to jlandgr: You asked how I build the dictionary of words from Virgil's website. Unfortunately, I just combined everything into one file, then formatted that. And I think I did that wrong - I don't think I handled contractions and hyphenations correctly. In any case, I don't have the intermediate files. Sorry.

My latest dictionary of Virgil words is in the zip file "DictFilt.zip". Also, I zipped up some word lists in SomeWordLists.zip. Maybe you'll find them helpful.

BTW, I'm not familiar with the name "Arnold Michelson". Is that on Virgil's website?

to rose: You said "unless he became a master art thief instead". But so far the theft is all just in the planning stages, isn't it? And Virgil would have to plan some art thefts for his game anyway, right? So maybe he's just revealing one of those plans as if it were real, in the hopes of interesting Nisha and framing Ian. He doesn't have to actually do anything else, other than hire a couple of goons, take some pictures, maybe rent a villa in Ian's name, and of course plant the puzzles in the A3s. What do you think?

to missphinx: Well, here is what I have in terms of automation at the moment. I could upload the code too, if someone likes to write C/C++ in Visual Studio. I do admire you for doing the wordsearch the "right" way though. I tried, but frankly, I hate wordsearch puzzles. I'd much rather program! BTW, I've always liked your moniker.

Yes, probably just "playerkiller", but I found it odd, that there was an "I" to the left of it, implicating Virgil? Or just a coincidence? But with the dark, "confessional" (as helper put it) mode of the puzzle and VKOC site, who knows ...
The machinima is also interesting considering this is all about very advanced gaming ...

Yes, I agree, j5, the lists have to be critically examined, for example just the beginning of bamboozlement was recognized, simply Benito, but it was missed that it was a reference to Benito Strawson etc. But having the list with the lines where something was recognized helps, as normally at least the word stem has been recognized and after that, one can manually go over the rest of the line. Still a lot easier than wading through all this on our own, so thanks a lot to xnbomb and helper for coding this!
Now, I've been thinking about the references "aftersixthebeginning" and "sidewaysstartatthree"

For the origin of the phrase: „the devil is in the details"/ „god is in the details" and the connection to Flaubert, Warburg, van der Rohe, see here
So, where does this lead us? Thinking again about the phrase "atsix…" etc. and "sideways…" etc., I couldn't help making a connection to God, working 6 days, taking the seventh off and it was "the beginning". Or it might refer to a line, whereas sideways might refer to a column.
But on which sheet. Hmmm, thinking about the file "sixsix.zip" and all in all the importance of the number 36, or 6 times 6, why not sheet 6?
And there, there are (at least) two odd things: the name of a still active player of the game of GO, Yukoki Takahashi. Odd. And below, "god complex", which, if not a reference to Virgil himself, might point to the psychological article of that name: here (with the names of Carl Jung etc.)
Or to Caligula, here
Depending on how you count (start at 0 or 1), these words are in the vicinity of 6C/ 5B (or 7C/6B if you interpret "after six" as seven. Or it might mean: after the line is the sixth line.
Whatever, just found this odd, but I've tried all kind of combinations (yukoki:takahashi, god:complex, or substituted complex by olymp/Olympus, where the Gods were said to reside), tried carl:jung, go:game and many more: no success 
