OK, how about this?

Wyatt's poem highlights "words" twice. So setting it up like this

Words
Words

it would mean, Words on top of words. So is our message really longer than it looks? Where one words ends, another begins. (i.e. allongoatspeed) Silly isn't it Very Happy

I haven't seen this mentioned yet.

The symbols when put in numerical order shows

@#$%^&*
2345678
bcdefgh

the "alphabetic" letters left are

aijklmnopqrstuvwxyz

So we can't ROT it, it's going to be a random substitution. Not all letters will have an equal "ROT" value.

Break down the "code" letters, and you have left

adwvgzrcmxpsybtlu (only 17) so the space at the end of line one is a letter and the - in the last word in the last line is a letter, giving us a total of 19 "coded" letters left. Giving us:
adwvgzrcmxpsybtlu -.(neither one has a number representation, so I'll keep them as letters).

So 19 "coded" letters + the 7 "symbol" letters = 26. Of course, this is assuming all 26 letters are used. It just seems odd that the single symbols and single letters equal up to 26.

did ja' get all that? Not sure I did. Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

new email from guides

here is what i said to the guides in an email.

Quoting Pam hensley <phensley2002@yahoo.com>:

> maybe another hint would help us all?? We cannot help
> those who need help without a hint.

Tonight I received this reply

The path that must be followed is binding even to us. Guidance must
come from
those who have found their way.

And still the need is urgent. Here is what can be said:

step by step

one key to start it all
one message of four lines
each line of many words, as steps along the way
each step a new key revealed

the guides

hope this helps us all solve this puzzle.

SOLVED

I kept remembering the old changeagents encryption tool that used symbols in the encode.

http://www.changeagentsmusic.com/ted2.html

The new hint suggested that each word would be the key to the next word.
In chat it was posted "A is the first step, then what is the second" to which I replied "b". This led me to try single letters on the entire first line string. Gupfee then said to try that second word (since it had symbols in it). I then tried "b", and "c", and "d", etc. When I got to "i" I almost jumped out of my seat when a real word stared me in the face: "live".
"I" is the key to decode the second word into "live".
Going back, assuming the first word was a single letter and if you use "step" as the key, the "A" does indeed decode into "I".

I then tried "live" as the key for the next word:
"live" is the key to decode the third word into "in".

Looks like I was on to something.

"in" is the key to decode the fourth word into "all".

"all" is the key to decode the fifth word into "the".

and then

"the" is the key to decode the sixth word into "daytime".

Danman_d took this first line and googled the poem:
I live in all the daytime
in faith and in might.
And in holy fire
I die every night.

White puzzle: first key

Very nice.

Presumably the first key was meant to be "seeker" to convert "A" to "I".

The actual coding mechanism seems to be this:
identify the symbols @#$%^&* -+ followed by the letters a-z
with the numbers 0-35, then combine key and plaintext
by doing addition modulo 36.

(So decoding, which is what you're actually doing, would be subtraction.)

That's quite a liberal translation. I took this to mean rather that this puzzle would be solved similarly to the initiatesred and initiatesblue puzzles, i.e., decode the quote, google it, get the author's name and find the relevant page on mythosphere. And it was.

Thank you konamouse. Boy was it frustrating. GREAT JOB! Very Happy

But, I keep reading how you solved it and I still don't understand. Could someone help me? How does "seeker" lead to the first letter being "I" and %@dw to lead to live and so forth. Sorry to be so dense. I don't need the whole message explained. Just the first line. Then I want to try from there so I understand.

Thank you Confused Boy have I got a lot to learn.

Just follow the link that Kona wrote:
http://www.changeagentsmusic.com/ted2.html

It leads to a decoder; type "A" in the text box, then "seeker" as code phrase, and then press "Decode"; you'll get an "I"

Then write the second word, %@dw ; using "I" as code phrase, you'll get "live"... and go on in this way with all the words Smile

Thanks. I went to ChageAgents and did that. Guess I just wanted to understand how she did it by hand. I'm kind of anal that way Sad

Didn't do it by hand, did it with the ChangeAgents page.
The lark was getting the second word figured out then going back and finding the first word with "seeker" as the key. I edited my post late last night to explain how it came about (by me just putting in 1 letter keys until i got to "i" and seeing that word "live" pop out at me).
