E3 2005

I figured their should be a topic about all of the goings-on at this years E3. Inculding Next-Gen Consoles and upcoming games.

I am personaly looking foward to all three of the next genreation consoles. PS3 seems to have to most power and capability, but 360 looks more toward the overall community and online aspects of gaming (which is one of the many reasons I play Halo 2 almost every night) The "Revolution" still has to show something other than a black box. I will keep an open mind about all of the systems and will probably, over time, purchase all three (depending on price)

Gamewise, I am looking foward to Gears of War (360) and also the next killzone (PS3), which looks amazing if that is real gameplay.

360 has shown to be the most... capable.
PS3 has shown to be the most powerfull. (there is a difference)
Revolution has shown to be the most secretive and gaurded, thus it better be good.

Ok, so if you didn't know, the official E3 homepage is www.e3insider.com (E3I). It's poorly coded, but has great video footage. Also, www.joystiq.com (Jq) www.gamespot.com (GS) www.gametrailers.com (GT) and www.1up.com (1up) have some good content.
I have scoured the current offerings, and you might find the following to be of interest:

- the video recaps from Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony (E3I) or the live press conference blog coverage (Jq).
- decent, unbiased E3 journalism (Jq).
- the most hilarious preview trailer award goes to Metal Gear Solid PS3 (GS).
- the most promising XBox360 preview trailer award goes to DOA4 (GT).
- the OMGWTFBBQ preview trailer award goes to Killzone PS3 (E3I).
- the best looking graphics preview trailer award goes to Fight Night PS3 (GT, E3I).
- the only real Nintendo preview trailer award goes to Zelda Revolution (GT, E3I, GS).
- the I love Aeris preview trailer award goes to FFVII PS3 (1up, GS).
- the where the hell is my preview trailer? award goes to Perfect Dark Zero Xbox360 (1up).
- the whoopdie-doo, it's cars preview trailer award goes to F1 PS3, Gran Turismo PS3, Project Gotham Racing Xbox360, NFS Xbox360, Motor Storm...who am I kidding, I don't really care.

If you only watch a couple of trailers, see the following for maximum effect (and in this order)-- MGS4, Killzone2, FFVII, Fight Night: Round 3, DOA4, and Zelda Revolution.

Now that I think of it, MotorStorm's trailer was pretty cool too (especially if you like mud).

What. You're still hungry?

Well, Xbox360 also has a Morrowind: Elder Scrolls video narrated by none other than Jean Luc Picard. Gears of War reminds us never to make friends with lizard men.

PS3 has some other video stuff...
- Ubisoft's Killing Day looks like doom 3 mixed with Devil May Cry. Pretty.
- Eyedentify looks like an eyetoy game that could actually be compelling (believe me, I'm as surprised as you are).
- I-8 has giant spider thingys that look like they were made with the UT engine.
- Tekken 6 has...sweaty people.
- Gundam World proves that Capcom really, really wishes gundams didn't remind everyone of mighty morphin power rangers.
- NiOh has cows. Cows that are on fire. And ninjas. What, you're still here?
- PerfectSword has one samauri kicking a whole buncha butt. That was a theme in a couple other trailers, but this one also had a cannon. My running tally has samauri: 3, fudal armies: 0

EDIT: Fixed Zelda name (thanks Rokar), added endorsement for MotorStorm.

Nice synopsis, SJ!
If I may make one clarification, though:
- the only real Nintendo preview trailer award goes to Zelda Revolution
If it's Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess you're talking about, yeah, it's coming out for the Gamecube. Whatever Zelda game hits the Revolution will be even more spectacular, I imagine.

My grades for the pre-show press conferences:
Sony: Showed me impressive tech demos, wowed me with specs and hardware configurations I don't even understand, and actually made me want to finally own a Sony system. Still, it's going to be a bajillion sequels of games we've all already played. 93/100.

Microsoft: Told me everything I already found out on the internet, failed to show me the only game to decide whether or not I own a new 'box, and every demo they displayed looked grainy and unpleasant. The hired goons paid to sit behind J Allard and clap at things made me unhappy. 360/1000.

Nintendo: TELL ME SOMETHING ABOUT THE REVOLUTION, DAMMIT! And for the love of Durga, give me a NEW Game Boy, not a GBA made shrinky-dink! Micro/10.

TridenT, exactly my thoughts! I was not going to post here, but I have to post and just say that I agree with you!

Killzone demo reminds me of halo2 demo showed at E3 last year (or was it year before?). That motorstorm and F1 game seemed pretty damn good too. Fight Night is impressive, if it's real-time, like they said.

Now, where's Halo3, Rallisport Challenge, Ninja Gaiden, Fable, Crimson Skies ....

I kill Konami!

I'm both THRILLED and PISSED at them right now.

Pissed because they announced yet another re-release of a game... MGS3:Subsistance. Having already bought MGS3, I'm annoyed that they're re-releasing it with extras, making me pay for it all over again.

Thrilled, because included with subsistance are the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 (Not Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2... but the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 for the old Nintendo system.) I've been pestering Konami for these for a while, and they're finally releasing them. These alone will be worth the cost of picking up the re-release.

I just wish they had released them seperately, for like $30 or so.

*grumbles*

One of the most coveted answers was given a short while ago today at the conference for the 360.

And if this is the first you've heard, I am pleased to relay:
The XBox 360 will indeed be Backward Compatible
Time to trade in your Xboxes now, and start saving!!!

From what I hear, only partially.

And only Gates knows what "partially" means, on this case. I read somewhere that it'll support the "big hits", whatever that means ... Pretty confusing!

But the games all run the same way. if the 360 can play 1, it has to be capable of playing them all... right?

It depends on how they're doing it. Logically, you'd think so, but as with all software/hardware issues, until you test them all, you can't be certain. More than likely it'll work with most games, but this is just Microsofts way of covering their a$$es to make sure that they don't say it's backwards compatible, and then having a game or 4 not work and getting sued, etc.

However, I'd be willing to bet that most all "big name" games, such as Halo/Halo2, Splinter Cell, PGR, etc. will be able to be played. It's the smaller titles I'd be more worried about.

I take it you don't own a PS2.

A large majority of PS1 games would work just fine on the PS2. However, I think there was a very small minority of PS 1 games that wouldn't work.

There also was a PS1 emulator for the mac called Connetix Virtual Game Station. You could pop in your PS1 game and play it on your Macintosh. However it worked only with certain games. Connectix actually maintained a list on their website of what games worked and what games didn't. (incidentally, MS now owns Connectix, who's other products included Virtual PC, a windows emulator for the Mac.)

My point is that emulation is never black and white. I will continue to be skeptical until MS comes out and says, "The 360 is 100% backwards compatible with ALL xbox 1 games."

I've been confused upon hearing this. The XBox would seem to be relatively (note I said relatively) simple item to emulate, but I can think of three problems:

1) I can only think that certain graphics or sound processing instructions cannot be emulated due to licensing issues, but one would think that all the graphics and sound capabilities would be used in most games.

2) In the emulation scene, there have been problems emulating items such as the Super FX chip in the SNES in the past. (You may remember it was used in the original StarFox.) The thing is the emulation difficulty came mostly from a lack of documentation. One would think Microsoft has complete technical documentation.

3) The emulation is probably slow. While the XBox may emulate Halo to an extent that's smooth enough to play, it may not be able to run Halo 2 fast enough.

My only other thought concerning this is that since everyone will be able to access XBox Live patches and updates for free with the XBox 360, there will be basic emulation software and then perhaps large re-compiled legacy patches that would allow enough of the game code to run natively on the XBox 360 to run smoothly, but this would only be done on a game by game basis.

So I was all set NOT to buy a revolution. I've lost interest in most Nintendo games, and most everything else I play is on other consoles.

However, I'm a HUGE fan of nintendo's back catalogue. Yah know, back during the NES and SNES days. So when I read the following:

Quote:
the Revolution will be online-friendly and will support a broadband gaming service similar to that of Microsoft's Xbox Live. Its most significant contribution to online gaming will be the ability to download Nintendo's entire catalog of NES, SNES, and Nintendo 64 console games.

I about lost it. EVERY game for the NES, SNES and 64? WTF? I'm gonna lose my job, I'll be playing so much.

The only question now is... how much will they charge?

From the clip at the floor showing, I think the guy's exact phrasology was "You will be able to play any nintendo portal game ever made on the revolution"

Theoretically if by portal he means system/platform You will also be able to play the game boys games too.
